I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I agree grade boundaries are going to be an issue if exams happen. I suspect there will be a lot at the low end, and a lot at the high end (those with less interrupted education and good on line provision) with less in the middle. God knows - in order to reduce the number of A, and A the grade boundaries between B,A and A might be very narrow.

Heifer · 07/12/2021 11:07

School has sent off UCAS form :-)

Seeline · 07/12/2021 12:10

@Heifer - no it's 2 lots of 3 exams over two days. She would be apoplectic if she had 3 in one day Grin

Seeline · 07/12/2021 12:11
@Seeline ignore my previous post - I've just reread and see that it isn't 3 exams in 1 day! sorry
Ignore my reply - yours was on a different page Grin Grin

crazycrofter · 07/12/2021 12:13

Yay @heifer! Not many on here whose forms are still to go now?

Dd hasn't had any offers yet, but it was only submitted last week. She was hoping for some offers before Christmas, but maybe with Psychology being so popular she'll have to wait.

Zebracat · 07/12/2021 12:26

We are waiting too @crazycrofter. She has been invited to some online stuff, and contacted for confirmation of her time in care.

Volterra · 07/12/2021 12:52

DS has a couple more slots to fill but will do that in January .

20newnames · 07/12/2021 14:07

DS's had news this morning that Lincoln have now reduced his offer to unconditional! Whether he puts it as firm or insurance! The letter says it is due to his excellent personal statement and references. I assume they just automatically gave him an offer as he met grade criteria before but have now looked in more detail.

I didn't think unconditional offers were a thing at all this year and even if there was I just assumed that he would have to firm to get it.

He is very pleased and it is a big comfort as he would have insured Lincoln anyway. I just hope it doesn't mean he doesn't quite see the need to put the extra work in now.

20newnames · 07/12/2021 14:08

I don't think DS is going to bother searching for another uni to fill the last slot on his UCAS form now.

Monkey2001 · 07/12/2021 14:11

@20newnames that is great, unconditional offers are much rarer than they used to be, so they must really want him! Nice confidence booster!

crazycrofter · 07/12/2021 14:19

That’s brilliant @20newnames!

Isthisjustnormal · 07/12/2021 14:29

Amazing @20newnames: well done to your Ds!! That is a lovely pressure off him. Remind me, where does it rank in his preferences?

20newnames · 07/12/2021 14:40

Lincoln would probably be his insurance choice. The original offer was BBB.

He is really pleased. I looked it up and apparently the guaranteed places scheme is for "applicants who we think would excel at Lincoln and make a significant contribution to our academic community". No pressure there then Grin

His other applications are Bath, Durham and Warwick who all want AAA (or Bath will take AAAB). He hasn't got offers from any of those yet and they all say it won't be until next year, before May! He is currently predicted AAAA which means with a bit of work he should meet their offers if he gets an offer which is the random bit.

His favourites would be Bath then Lincoln, the only thing putting him off Lincoln is the lack of prestige for future jobs. Both him and DH thought the engineering department was excellent and he definitely felt he would be happy there. I was very strong that there was no point in putting somewhere on the form if he didn't think he would actually be happy there. There are a lot of positives to Lincoln, distance wise money wise etc but it just doesn't have the cachet of the other top unis.

I suspect if he doesn't get an offer from Bath he may well pick Lincoln over Durham and Warwick but we have months to think about that.

ealingwestmum · 07/12/2021 14:46

Well done to him 20newnames, and yes, an interesting dilemma; not one that needs acting on now thankfully. But great to feel valued for the time being.

Piggywaspushed · 07/12/2021 14:59

excel at Lincoln and make a significant contribution to our academic community

In layman's terms this means they act as ambassadors at things like Open Days, which is nice anyway.

ChristopherTracy · 07/12/2021 15:03

well done @20newnames!

Oblomov21 · 07/12/2021 15:03

Heifer that is good! Unlike other schools that sat on it for weeks!
Hoorah for Notts LNAT Mummy.
That is so cool Newnames. Someone actually reading his PS!

I just got email from Southampton to say that post offer day visit is now (my birthday) late Jan. we all here thought it was wierd they'd previously said beginning May. But he'll be studying for feb mocks then, so maybe not that convenient actually.

20newnames · 07/12/2021 15:29

Thanks all!

That is so cool Newnames. Someone actually reading his PS!
That made me chuckle, makes all my hours of nagging and going over it hundreds of times worth it Grin

Oblomov21 · 07/12/2021 15:38

Suspect you may be the first! Of any uni who has acknowledged actually reading any of our dc's!

I'm hoping someone eventually reads my DS's - I was extremely proud of the work I did on it thanks very much! Wink

(It got edited by me, by closest friend am employment lawyer partner who read English at uni, my mum. Dh's work had a team meeting and analysed it, all 6 of them!)

Alsoplayspiccolo · 07/12/2021 15:40

That’s a fab offer, 20newnames, and it’s answered a question I was going to post, which was to ask whether DD should carry on tweaking her PS, or should she just get it submitted at this point?
Sounds like she should finish making it as good as it can be, in the hope it will be read!

Heifer · 07/12/2021 15:43

how nice to have that in the bag @20newnames - even better if it's not his 1st pick as he will still want to do well and not take foot off the pedal.

@Oblomov21 - agree it was nice and quick from the school, they have been very supportive during this process to be fair.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/12/2021 15:43

That's fantastic news @20newnames!! Well done your DS.

ChristopherTracy · 07/12/2021 16:52

@Oblomov21 I was really tempted to edit the statement a lot but in the end didn't want to flatten DS' voice - as he was applying for a STEM subject I didn't mind the lack of fluidity and South London inference so much as it speaks to who he is.

Would have been different had he been applying for a humanity!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 07/12/2021 17:28

Live: Dd has offer from Sussex she has not checked track yet

Oh lovely @OrangeCinnamonCocktail - congrats!

@20newnames - Fab news about Lincoln. I too thought unconditional would be rare so that's particularly good news.
