I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Ours is with the school. Should be sent to UCAS next week.

singingstones · 03/12/2021 19:36

Great news Also that you have someone on your side now, for the future too if DS stays where he is. That must be a relief.

Which way is your DD leaning, Paddington? I know I am biased because I don't know Leeds Conservatoire at all but RWCMD is a fantastic place with a very caring staff.

(Also, we must definitely know some of the same people - it's a small world round these parts though! I worked with Rachel once very briefly many years ago and she was such a warm and wonderful person, it was an absolute treat to spend time with her. And the playing.. I will never forget it 🤯🤩)

singingstones · 03/12/2021 19:39

Fingers crossed we all make it in time for Santa to bring at least one pre Christmas offer Xmas Smile
I guess some places have been on strike this week which may have caused a bit of a backlog.

NCTDN · 03/12/2021 20:26

Thanks @singingstones for linking me- I'd not seen this at all- tend to look at higher education not further education. Will read the thread then continue...

Delphigirl · 03/12/2021 20:42

Hi everyone! I’m so sorry I’ve been MIA for about a month, working away, living in a hotel, totally over scheduled, barely any chance to pee.
Anyway got back to find that DS’s school had sat on his UCAS for for FIVE WEEKS and not sent it in. So frustrating. Anyway it is in as of yesterday morning so I hope he gets some offers shortly. Fingers crossed.
Monkey I see your DS passed his test - well done to him! I’m still reading from the start of the thread so I have some catching up to do on everyone else’s news….

BlueMarigold · 03/12/2021 20:48

Welcome back @Delphigirl!

icanbewhatiwant · 03/12/2021 22:00

Yes...Ds hasn't finished deciding which 5 universities to put down, he has told me he's had his PS back for editing. He's never going to show me or tell me what needs adding though. So it'll be a while yet. He did tell me school aren't sending off until January. But he's admitted now that they are sending them off as they are ready. So some are done, others aren't.

Congrats. to all those with offers. Too many to name.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 03/12/2021 22:21

Thanks everyone. Yes, the head is fantastic - her exact words were, "X is loved and valued." 😍
Ann, yes, he's going to audition at the other school anyway because there's no certainty that anything will change, so we need options. He actually really liked what he was of life there, so may yet decide he would like to move.

No UCAS form submitted here, singing....sigh.

Monkey2001 · 03/12/2021 23:14

@singingstones I also know musicians in Penarth associated with RWSMD so probably also have people in conmon - music is a small world.

DoggerelBank · 03/12/2021 23:54

Well done, everyone! So much great news tonight!
@singingstones No UCAS form sent in by us yet, as far as I know. I think I would have had to pay something probably? I've given up asking. It'll go at some point, I'm sure. And as for the EPQ, I've no idea what's going on. His policy seems to be if you start the first draft one day before deadline, it'll be done quicker than if you start it earlier. His life, his problem, I guess. Just hope missed deadlines don't ruin Christmas.

NCTDN · 04/12/2021 08:42

So DD has had 4/5 offers back for liberal arts- Warwick, Loughborough, Bristol and Manchester. Just waiting on Durham...

20newnames · 04/12/2021 09:13

Excellent news @NCTDN! Warwick are known to be late offerers so that’s great to have it the bag.

singingstones · 04/12/2021 09:14
@singingstones I also know musicians in Penarth associated with RWSMD so probably also have people in conmon - music is a small world.
Indeed a small world - there is one particular street in Penarth where every other house seems to contain a professional musician or two 😂

Seeline · 04/12/2021 09:18

So much good news at the moment! Congratulations to all

Best wishes for those in not so good positions at the moment.

On another matter - learning to drive. Trying to work out whether it's living in London, or is more wide spread. DD has only had 5 lessons, but each time she comes home with tales of how appallingly badly the learner driver is treated by others. Things have ranged from people tailgating, overtaking in dangerous locations (including at junctions), and using their horns, to people actually winding down windows and hurling abuse!! This is in an official driving school vehicle. DH was looking forward to taking her out after a few more lessons, but I'm not sure that this is a good thing if this is how people react to L plates. I can't believe people behave so badly/dangerously. Is this common, or has she just been unlucky?

ealingwestmum · 04/12/2021 09:26

This is unfortunately a real thing Seeline. All plates: L from professional school and family cars, to P plate post passing. It’s a proper demonstration on how parts of our society is really f*cked to intimidate young people in this way.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 04/12/2021 09:31

Monkey and singing, I know the street you're talking about - lots of Thursday evening street performances during lockdown, by people we know. Lots of musicians from WNO and BBC NOW live in Penarth because of its proximity to the WMC.
It is indeed a very small musical world! Smile

Seeline · 04/12/2021 09:43

@ealingwestmum It is appalling - we were all learners once. I always give lots of extra space to learners - mainly for my own protection 😁

cariadambyth · 04/12/2021 10:11

Happy weekend all, it has been lovely to read so much good news to end the week.

NCTDN · 04/12/2021 10:47

@Seeline that's horrible about learners. DD didn't encounter any of that- but not in London of that makes a difference? She was cautious about having P plates in for long though in case drivers took advantage of it. I'd prefer them to be on though. The other day I changed where I was parked at asda when I realised the car next to me was P plates Grin

ealingwestmum · 04/12/2021 11:35

I am hoping it’s just restricted to London NCTDN, it would be horrible to think all regions are so intolerant of inexperienced drivers in the making.

Zebracat · 04/12/2021 11:40

The learner driverabuse is horrid. Don’t think that happens here in the dreary middle. We live in a road very popular with driving schools, and we remember how hard it is and we are always polite and patient. It’s such a small thing to do.
@NCTDN could I ask what the offers are? And what your chicks favourite course is. Ours loved the Warwick Course, and has applied, but kind of dismissed all the others as “history light”, to my disappointment. I thought they all sounded really exciting, especially Bristol.

NCTDN · 04/12/2021 12:53

@Zebracat tbh I know it's liberal arts with a year abroad but don't know much more apart from Spanish and English.
Offers are what they put on the website so generally AAA* (no pressure there then!)

icanbewhatiwant · 04/12/2021 14:27

@Seeline we have a lot of 60mph roads round here. So many cars go over take and go racing past when we have L plates on. Even when driving at 60mph. Yet I drive the same roads without L plates and most people don't over take. There are always idiots that do over taking everyone. But it's so much worse with a learner. People obviously think they will get stuck behind at the next round about.
It always winds me up. Or another one is tail gating 😡

We are east Anglia, so not London.

@NCTDN Ds refused to drive with P plates after a week. He said they were teasing him at school. I wish it was compulsory for all learners.

Zebracat · 04/12/2021 15:27

Crikey @NCTDN. That sounds scary. Did you decide against an insurance pick. We did, then pulled it back and swapped one for Royal Holloway with a foundation year., just in case it all went wrong. And as the latest mocks have gone a bit wrong, glad we did.
