I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

No because the teacher that’s ill has to write the reference. I was under the impression this had already been done but it hasn’t.

Volterra · 30/11/2021 07:26

Proggy what a complete nightmare. Really hope today is a better day.

Fingers firmly rossed that the medicine applicants hear something soon.

Crazycrofter - she's nearly there!

@Nard75 neither of our 2 want to head off the London then! DS is waiting for Exeter and I suspect will put Southampton and maybe Birmingham. Will be interested to see what he does get in MAT as he seemed to feel it was better than TMUA - but as he said, a lot of how he felt after them was to do with expectation.

Heifer · 30/11/2021 08:30

@BlueMarigold

No because the teacher that’s ill has to write the reference. I was under the impression this had already been done but it hasn’t.
DD has just had to ask her form teacher to write her reference (so more delays) like you we had assumed they would be done already but apparently the girls can't request them from their form teacher until everything else is completed. To be fair to school it's not their fault DD has delayed so long but she was on it, ready to go and now another delay. She was also told not to ask form teacher to do it urgently etc, so DD said when convenient (and hopes that doesn't mean next week)..
Heifer · 30/11/2021 08:36

@crazycrofter thanks for the tip re Aston, I found all your posts so that was useful. Only having 1 hockey team has ruled it out for DD along with me noticiing the ££ to stay in halls.

She is back to thinking of Nottingham Trent or Sheffield Hallum as back up.

@Fruitygal great re Sheffield. Is is just Durham your DD is waiting for now?

Good luck to all waiting - and waiting for school to send them - and of course waiting for DD/DS to finish them!

Heifer · 30/11/2021 08:41

Has anyone else been really poorly but it wasn't covid - I've got a sick note from the doctor which says upper respiratory tract infection (having google = cold) I haven't seen a doctor just requested a sick note as it was over the weekend means 5 days self cert is up today and no way do I feel well enough to go back to work - in fact I feel dreadful.

BlueMarigold · 30/11/2021 08:44

Thanks @Heifer I can’t see ours being sent off this side of Christmas to be honest. The school have a load of staff off sick and they may even have to go back to online learning for a bit. There’s not enough staff to cover all the lessons.

Fruitygal · 30/11/2021 08:50

@Heifer just Durham now but that’s going to be in the new year so she’s happy she has a top snd reserve choice from what she’s already received so content and if Durham offer it would be the icing on the cake.

@BlueMarigold have the staff got covid or other bugs? Know some schools with 10+ staff off with covid - one who put all the teachers in a small room for a meeting the other week so not surprised.

Parents evening and Christmas concert have all been planned as online for this term at DDs school a shame but i get it

estherfrewen · 30/11/2021 08:53

Well done on all the offers! DS has mocks starting this week and going into next week followed by Cambridge interview straight after so can’t wait for week on Friday at 3.30pm!

@Heifer - yes both DS and I have had awful non Covid bugs. Felt dreadful for about 5 days. DS then had his appendix incident followed immediately by another cold which he still has. I think he is just really really run down. Am hoping for a bit of a break for him over Xmas as mocks will be done. He just needs to finalise his three NEAs and his French IRP which are basically done so am hoping there won’t be much else work wise as think once January term is here it is a long run into A levels….

BlueMarigold · 30/11/2021 08:54

@Fruitygal not sure to be honest. I think it’s a combination of things, winter colds, covid, chest infection etc. I have a feeling some staff are signed off with stress.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 30/11/2021 09:21

Congratulations to all DCs who’ve received offers since last week, and get well soon to anyone struggling with illness.

Sharing the frustration of UCAS forms still waiting to be submitted. I tried to drag DD through final uni choices at the weekend, but she said it was all getting too much, so I had to give it up.
Honestly, she is only really engaged with her top choices, one of which she hadn’t previously looked in depth at the course spec for (she was blinded by the fact it offered English, film AND theatre, which none of the others do). IMO, the course doesn’t look particularly inspiring, and it possibly lacks depth as a consequence of covering all three interests.
Her head of 6th form is on a secondment until April; the uni advisor is covering but doesn’t reply to emails, according to DD.

I’m tired of trying to drag DD through everything. I know her AHDH is a big factor, but still - how is she going to manage her life next year?

Mocks are in January for year 11 and 13, with no word about contingency plans or the possibility of exams being cancelled.

I really have had enough of all the uncertainty and trying to keep both DCs motivated - it’s exhausting.

Monkey2001 · 30/11/2021 09:29

@Alsoplayspiccolo has she looked at Edinburgh? They have the Scottish very flexible first year, so can probably do all three there. And they have the Edinburgh festival.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 30/11/2021 10:55

She discounted Edinburgh, mostly because she thinks her predicted AAB is optimistic, but also because of the distance, Monkey.
I've persuaded her to consider liberal arts at RH as a choice, as the choice of modules would allow her to study all three interests.
I just want her to choose, submit and focus on getting the best grades she can, but she doesn't appear to be in any hurry.

Monkey2001 · 30/11/2021 11:02

Ah, but remember that she can submit it with 2 or 3 choices and add the others after Christmas. No need to feel under pressure to choose.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 30/11/2021 12:27

Thanks, Monkey, I think that's what she needs to do...for my sanity, at least.

20newnames · 30/11/2021 12:29

Well done on the offers @Fruitygal and @ChristopherTracy.

@ChristopherTracy where else has your DS applied? I think we are the only two with DS's applying for Mech Eng. DS has applied for general eng MEng at Warwick and Durham and MEng in Mech Eng at Bath and Lincoln. Bath, Warwick and Durham are all notorious for being late with offers but he has one for Lincoln as his insurance at BBB. He is yet to pick a final one to apply for.

DS's favourite is Bath so if he gets an offer there he would firm that and have Lincoln as his insurance.

ChristopherTracy · 30/11/2021 12:39

Have PM'd you.

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 30/11/2021 13:02

I've been meaning to ask about adding more choices later, DS has 4 chosen and everything else in place to submit but I couldn't find confirmation about adding another later on the UCAS website. If you can definitely do that we could submit now.

ealingwestmum · 30/11/2021 13:03

You can ED. DD added later.

20newnames · 30/11/2021 13:17

That is what DS has done @ExcessiveIyDisorganised. Just applied to 4 now and is thinking about a 5th.

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 30/11/2021 13:20

Thanks @ealingwestmum, I'll tell DS tonight. He's been dithering between Royal Holloway and Reading for 5th spot but although they tick all his boxes they aren't quite appealing to him in the same way as his top 4, so now St Mary's has come into play.

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 30/11/2021 13:24

And @20newnames Smile

Monkey2001 · 30/11/2021 13:46

Yes, DS1 added one in January a couple of years ago and got an offer. Sometimes it can be helpful to see whether you get offers from favourites before deciding where to pitch other choices.

crazycrofter · 30/11/2021 14:08

Dd actually sat down with me last night to talk about uni choices Shock so I showed her my spreadsheet Grin She was quite impressed and asked me to send it to her! So at least my detailed research hasn’t completely gone to waste!

Wheresthebeach · 30/11/2021 14:47

@Heifer Hope you feel better soon. I was floored with chest infection earlier in the autumn, cold went straight to chest.

DD currently looks like a ghost and in bed. LFT fine.

DoggerelBank · 30/11/2021 18:41

@crazycrofter Well done! Our efforts are not always in vain!
