I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Congrats @Monkey2001.

Nard75 · 29/11/2021 14:43

Well done to @Monkey2001 DS. DS has mocks straight after Christmas and DS2 in year 11 starts his next week.

Shimy · 29/11/2021 14:45

YAY! Congratulations @Monkey2001's DS. Has he got a car? hope you find decent insurance cover.

DS is fed up that exams might be cancelled AGAIN! he was really looking forward to them.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/11/2021 14:59

Congratulations to miniMonkey, its such a relief when they pass with these ridiculous waiting times for a new test!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/11/2021 15:00

DS mocks straight after Christmas, those will be the first ones they sit this academic year.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 29/11/2021 15:18

Thanks so much @Decorhate!

Thanks all. He is not desperate to do lots of driving, the quote to get a policy with DS1 and DS2 was £700, so will probably leave it until he is 18 and has had licence for 3 months, just wanted the test out of the way really.

Isthisjustnormal · 29/11/2021 15:44

Well done mini monkey!

Nard75 · 29/11/2021 15:57

I hope exams don't get cancelled i don't think DS could cope with another lockdown. Here's hoping that this variant isn't serious and they are just being cautious.

DoggerelBank · 29/11/2021 16:57

Wonderful news, @Monkey2001! You can hang up your taxi driving keys, if I've remembered correctly that he's not a drinker.

In a bit of a flap here. Just got a letter from school saying there are now mocks in the first 2 weeks after Christmas, which could be used for final grades. We're abroad for Christmas - flights cost a fortune, and can't be cancelled, paid for by a very elderly and frail family member who wants 'a last holiday before I die' with extended family. Huge amount of pressure to go. It's just 2 days self isolation for returning travellers at the mo, but that doesn't make much sense, so could easily turn into 10 days self-isolation. Would never in a million years have let this be booked if there'd been any hint of mocks straight after, let alone the equivalent of final exams. Aaaarrrgh.

Decorhate · 29/11/2021 17:23

Well done to @Monkey2001 Ds!

Oblomov21 · 29/11/2021 17:28

Hoorah Monkey Ds 🚗

EwwSprouts · 29/11/2021 17:35

Vroom vroom mini Monkey!

Lots of mini tests here. Mocks end of Feb. DS would rather do exams in the summer, so it feels 'proper'.

Monkey2001 · 29/11/2021 17:51

Thanks for all the congratulations!

@DoggerelBank that is such a tricky one. I think I would continue to plan to go but keep an eye on what was happening for people returning from abroad in terms of isolation. Will he agree to do a set amount of work each day whilst you are away or is that too hard? DS1's favourite way of preparing for Maths/Science was to do past papers, which you can do anywhere, but clearly not ideal. Is his form tutor likely to be helpful?

I am really glad DS2 doesn't have exams until end of Feb as he needs to focus on Med School interviews now that the driving test is out of the way, both will allow him to choose his dates, so hoping to do one in December and the other in January, then he can prepare for mocks. Our poor DC have one pressure after another.

ChristopherTracy · 29/11/2021 18:31

Some offers in here today for DS backups!

icanbewhatiwant · 29/11/2021 18:38

@Fruitygal my car has an app. It says ventilation timer. I'm too scared to try it though 🤣

@Monkey2001 congrats to Ds. Dd1 took his in his own car, ds2 wouldn't even consider it.

We had sprinkling of snow on roof tops and cars, but none settled on the ground. When I left for work 8.45am it was minus 1. Thankfully Ds didn't have to leave until 10.30am. DH told him to go the long way round to school, it's country lanes all the way otherwise. I always worried about ds1 driving in the ice...now I've got it all again with ds2. If we get snow I'll get dh to take him.

Shimy · 29/11/2021 19:13

Excellent news @ChristopherTracy. What are they?

ChristopherTracy · 29/11/2021 19:19

ABB for Kingston and ABB for Sussex (BBB) if firm. Mech eng.

Volterra · 29/11/2021 19:21

Total silence from DS about TMUA results so I assume not what he wanted. Luckily it doesn’t need to be submitted anywhere if you don’t want it to be and the universities won’t be aware that you sat it or so I have been told.

Shimy · 29/11/2021 19:25

I like the Sussex offer particularly. The Kingston one sounds rather high but maybe they are more flexible on results day. Well done him!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 29/11/2021 19:27

Oh @DoggerelBank that is worrying! Talk to the school maybe about alternative exam time? I think he'd have to have different questions according to guidance Confused

Well done @Monkey2001 Ds 🚘

Oh Gosh @doggerelBank That's a bind...how long is the holiday?

Congrats @ChristopherTracy - lovely to have offers.

Several girls at DD's school just got Oxford/Cambridge rejections...one in particular astonishes me. I think she'd be perfect for Oxford...very bright, amazing poetry/writing/.

ealingwestmum · 29/11/2021 19:47

Great offers ChristopherTracy!

Shimy · 29/11/2021 20:00

@Wheresthebeach What a shame! I know a girl like that too, a Latin genius that scored 100% in 13+ CE (wanted to student Classics), didn't even get an interview. It's hard to know what they're looking for sometimes.

Fruitygal · 29/11/2021 20:02

@DoggerelBank - I think you need to continue with holiday unless there’s a 14 quarantine. Take revision cards and papers. Is it skiing ⛷ or hot destination?

@Monkey2001 good luck for DS interview prep. DD is loving independence of driving and went for brunch at the weekend with the girls plus beautician for her nails 💅. Not paid any additional since she passed (weirdly it didn’t go up) £300 when I added her as a learner.

@ChristopherTracy congratulations on the offers !
