Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thank you!

Off to get DS jabbed soon and to wrangle my phone for a passport sized photo for his SAQ for Cambridge.

crazycrofter · 09/10/2021 13:03

Thanks for the new thread!

mummabear74 · 09/10/2021 13:15

Thank you. DD 17 has her second covid jab booked for tomorrow. Has anyone else in 16/17 year age group had their second jab yet? We booked it online through central booking service but none of DDs friends have had a second jab.

I would like to know this too, I wonder whether we will be turned away

How old is she?

Zebracat · 09/10/2021 13:49

Thanks for the new thread. Those personal statements sound fab to me. We looked at the Oxford chap and did find it helpful, but I hope also that the best advice is to let their authentic voice ring out, altho my authentic voice at 18 might have been I don’t know how to study or write an essay but please help me escape my dysfunctional family, and I hope there are pretty boys on your course. Luckily our girl does love to learn!
The issues with teaching sound awful. Her vi form college is small and stable, if not terribly exciting, but the teachers know the students and will put themselves out for them. We are very grateful.

Sorry again!

Here is a photo of the Greyhound trying to join in on a Pom bear snack sesh Bear (empty pack) I'm not partial to fruit shoots, pretty certain he would also try to steal a Greggs Sausage Roll too.

I can book Ds in for his second vaccine if I go online. But they are offering dates the week before half term and the week after. I want him to have it over half term. He is 18 next month. So one of the older ones. Af Ds complained that his chest hurt after the first one, so I would like him to have it on a weekday this time, so I can call the gp if he feels the same. We had it at the weekend last time.

He won't tell me when school plan to send ucas applications. He won't tell me whether he has done a PS. No point me keep asking. He gets more annoyed.

I had my first flu vaccine yesterday. I've never had one before. I've had such a headache all day today, presumably a side effect. DH has had a flu vaccine 20 plus years and never felt ill after. He's got his later today.

icanbewhatiwant · 09/10/2021 14:06

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail look at his eyes...he's enjoying that 😂

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 09/10/2021 14:09

@Monkey2001 @Piggywaspushed she's 17 and jab is tomorrow morning so I'll report back afterwards.

Wheresthebeach · 09/10/2021 14:22

Thanks for the new thread. We hope to get DDs ucas application all done and dusted next week. Fingers crossed for offers coming soon, then she can just concentrate on studies - esp Chemistry which is the hardest for her.

Volterra · 09/10/2021 15:16

Thank you very much for the new thread. DS just had second jab but is 18 now.

Seeline · 09/10/2021 16:02

Thanks for the new thread. DD is only 17.2 so not sure if she can have the second jab.

ealingwestmum · 09/10/2021 16:02

Checking in, thanks Monkey and for the tag Orange.

ealingwestmum · 09/10/2021 16:10

In other news, DD ventured into town for her first legal UK clubbing night. I say legal, Spain didn’t seem so fussed on age but she’d refrained from trying here.

All good, little drama, think she’ll suffer tomorrow as she has an evening race meet tonight. Feel like a quantum leap from circa midnight pick ups from homes to club early hours, but there will be a tighter no clubbing rule during term time in place (unless exceptional circumstances) for her own good, until post exams.

EwwSprouts · 09/10/2021 16:33

Thanks Monkey and Orange for the tag.

No start to the PS here yet either CrazyCrofter.

DS had received a letter (proper old style post!) from Lancaster Univ about the open day next weekend. Promise of a goody bag as well as live students to talk too.

On the less positive news front it seems the application to offer rate for St Andrews is worse than most Cambridge colleges for NatSci if you are from the UK but not Scotland. They take more international students than rest of UK students ($$$ I guess).

Nard75 · 09/10/2021 16:38

Thanks for the new thread.

mummabear74 · 09/10/2021 16:46

@Seeline DD was only 17 in August so will be interesting to see if she gets it tomorrow. I'll understand if they don't give it but will be more put out that I'll miss out on my weekly lie in!

ProggyMat · 09/10/2021 17:04

Thanks for the new thread Monkey and shout out Orange!

Delphigirl · 09/10/2021 17:35

Thanks for the new thread! On train back from an unexpectedly successful Plymouth open day. I must say - if they know about anything they know about Marine Science. They have done a very good job of totally renewing the campus, looks great, full of new and funky buildings and excellent facilities. The marine station right on the sea next to the aquarium is excellent. Everything is 10 mins walk from everything else it seems - accommodation bang next to or in the campus, campus in the middle of the City 10 mins from the Barbican/Marine Station and Hoe. Had a very nice fish and chips lunch outside on the harbour front and felt like I was on holiday. Much of the rest of the grimmer bits of Plymouth city centre has either been renewed or is scheduled for demolition. DS was quite taken with it and it will certainly be his insurance choice and might even be his firm …!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 09/10/2021 17:38

Good news @Delphigirl, I've always liked the sound of Plymouth Uni...I do like to be near the see though

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 09/10/2021 17:39

Sea !

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 17:43

@Delphigirl glad to hear Plymouth impressed.

Just had a bit of a shock here with 2 positive LFTs. Did the second because I couldn't believe the first. I haven't been anywhere!!! Does anyone know if it is true or just a rumour that orange juice can contaminate the test? There last thing I consumed before doing it was a glass of orange juice. Clutching at straws as we have a friend staying here, supposed to be having friends over for dinner tonight and have a funeral next week at which we are all supposed to be singing, DS doing a solo piece. Urghhh!!!

I was really impressed Orange. He also liked Southampton but the course there is less applied/practical. If he wanted to be an academic or get a Russell Group degree which he could utilise in eg finance or law then Southampton would be the right choice. But for full on practical training and employment skills fir a marine career (eg coming out a professional dive qualification) Plymouth has the edge and I think it might suit him better.
He has also just announced that the rather long train journey to/from Plymouth is perfect for him to watch a full marvel film from start to finish HmmGrin
