Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@mummabear74 ooh - please update as to whether your vaccine quest is successful!

@Delphigirl I went to Plymouth Poly many years ago - it is a lovely place to study. I suspect most of my old haunts are amongst the demolished areas 😆😆

Piggywaspushed · 09/10/2021 17:58

I live on the edge of East Anglia . Nearly as far from the sea as you can get (which I find tough as I grew up basically where the land parts of Vigil were filmed...). A surprising number of students from my school have gone to Plymouth, given its inaccessibility from here. It seems to be really rising in popularity, along with Lincoln , which has overtaken NTU , and Chichester.

Piggywaspushed · 09/10/2021 18:00

Oh no monkey just seen your post!

It is not publicised that you shouldn't eat or drink for an hour before doing a LFT so it could be OJ. Fingers crossed for you.

Delphigirl · 09/10/2021 18:21

Oh jo monkey just seen this!
Yes my kids have experimented (!) with lots to see if they can get a positive result - both lemon juice snd orange juice do it. I would drink a cup of tea, leave it a further 10 mins, and try again…. Good luck!

Delphigirl · 09/10/2021 18:23

Aha thanks @seeline and @Piggywaspushed - both good to hear for different reasons!

stoneysongs · 09/10/2021 18:27

Thanks for the new thread and the tag. Sorry to hear of your +ve test results Monkey, hopefully it's the juice!

20NewNames · 09/10/2021 18:31

Well done to the offer holders! And to you @OrangeCinnamonCocktail on the MBA.

@Isthisjustnormal We were at Warwick today too! What building tour didn’t let parents in? We all got the tour around the engineering building which was great. Our tour guide for the main campus tour was less impressive ‘there’s the whatever building but I don’t know much about that’ was a recurring theme!
Warwick definitely went up on DS’s list after today. Still not in the top two but it was lovely to see a campus that actually had people and an atmosphere rather than the quiet ones over the summer.

First draft of personal statement has just been done after we spent a couple of hours together going through it. It still needs work but the first bit is at least done which was a roadblock so that’s a relief.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/10/2021 20:17

Thanks for the tag, Orange and for making me smile with that photo of your gorgeous boy 🥰
Our poor puppy had a (horrendously expensive op) on his mouth yesterday, so I have spent most of the last 24 hours mopping the kitchen floor, which looks like a murder scene 😱

DD and DH are on their way home from Southampton’s open day. dDD called me from the car, saying she loved the uni and the course (film with English), not so much the city.
It’s her first open day, so I’m thrilled she’s excited.

Piggywaspushed · 09/10/2021 20:18

Ooooh, Film: exciting!

Piggywaspushed · 09/10/2021 20:32

Just looked up that course also. It looks great!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/10/2021 20:36

I knew you’d approve, Piggy! Grin
She watched the department talks before she went, and then met the tutors today and said they were great.
She is super keen to combine English with film, and Southampton course really appeals.

Piggywaspushed · 09/10/2021 20:39

The English bit of the course looks really contemporary and relevant too. It looks ace.

icanbewhatiwant · 09/10/2021 20:41

@Piggywaspushed I know we were talking about what is in Ipswich but I didn't realise you were the edge of east anglia. Probably not far from me then. I'm roughy halfway between Norwich and Ipswich.

@Monkey2001 hopefully just the orange juice.

Piggywaspushed · 09/10/2021 20:43

Ish. I'm in brussels sprout country , so the A1 corridor!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 09/10/2021 20:45

Ooh poor pup!

Cities like Southampton and Portsmouth really suffered during WW2, so you get weird pockets of lovely parts with brutalist architecture and some really run down parts. I think Southampton has come on an awful lot, the city centre was quite vibrant one warm September evening, had a holiday feel, when we went for an event recently but there are some....uninspiring...parts I agree. Opportunities for PT jobs look good.

Dd going to Sussex Open Day next weekend, they have a choice of some film modules on their music degree. This is one of those when she's choosing to shortlist the Uni because she loves the area, but the course seems a bit lacking e.g no individual music tuition included with the course.

I guess it is down to the individual what holds the most weight?

Hattifatteners · 09/10/2021 20:45

Thank you for a new thread @Monkey2001 and fingers crossed for negative PCR. Thanks for a tag @OrangeCinnamonCocktail.
DD has her second vaccine booked for next Sat (she has been 18 over a month) but we need to cancel as we are going to be in Liverpool to nosey around the town and the uni. I will take her to a walk in clinic after. DD sent her UCAS application a week ago on Friday, but the school hasn't sent them on yet. Congratulations to those who already have offers!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 09/10/2021 20:47

Any luck @Monkey2001 with a different test?

icanbewhatiwant · 09/10/2021 20:51

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail I hope you have better weather at Sussex than us. It was so wet last Saturday. It's been so warm here in east anglia today. Shame it wasn't like today last Saturday.

cariadambyth · 09/10/2021 21:10

Thanks for the tag. Glad to hear of so many positive responses to the various open days.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/10/2021 21:11

I’m amazed a music course wouldn’t offer individual instrumental lessons, Orange Confused. Seems ridiculous.

Most cities have not-so-nice parts, don’t they, but at least Southampton has some gorgeous areas and a good social life; DD didn’t say she was put offer by her impression of the city.

AnneOfCleavage · 09/10/2021 21:25

What a difference a week makes eh icanbe. Today would have been a much more pleasant experience looking round Sussex. Oh well. Fingers crossed next Sat is dry for the next open day.

Thanks for the new thread Monkey. Have you done another LFT? Hope it's a negative reading this time 🤞🤞

crazycrofter · 09/10/2021 21:26

@Delphigirl Plymouth is number 2 on dd’s list, behind Southampton! She didn’t like the Plymouth campus as much as Southampton’s - too much on top of the city centre I think. She also preferred the city centre in Southampton, with its park areas. But the Hoe and Barbican are lovely. She’d be happy to end up in either place.

icanbewhatiwant · 09/10/2021 21:39

I often see you all write of contextual offers. I have been trying to see what it means. It looks like this is only certain schools. Is that correct? I just looked up our school and it says they get above average A level results so aren't included in contextual offers.

icanbewhatiwant · 09/10/2021 21:40

Absolutely @AnneOfCleavage

Decorhate · 09/10/2021 22:03

Thanks for tagging me into the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCocktail

Ds has done a first draft of his PS. Needs some work but not bad. Wonders will never cease.
