This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Flowers to all our recent Covid sufferers

Thanks for the thread @OrangeCinnamonCocktail.
So glad to be back in school. Our Dd does so much better with structure. Trying to get the personal statement sorted. It’s very difficult to explain her background. Then last night, having been very clear she wants to do history, she announced that she wants at least a science component. She takes computer science, but she seemed to want something more sciencey than that.and , there is very little opportunity to combine those, although I can see some=obvious applications. Tricky but I found a great course at Bristol, a Masters in History with innovation, and she didn’t like that at all, wouldn’t want to soil her little hands with commerce, worked our way back to history with some inter disciplinary stuff eventually. It is lovely that she’s finding her way. I think we have a slight personality clash, I think she needs to keep her options open, and that she may be surprised to find she has views that change, she seems to think there is a perfect course for her, somewhere.
This thread is such a help.

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail thanks for the thread!
@Zebracat has your DD considered Liberal Arts and Sciences - www.birmingham.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/liberal-arts/liberal-arts-and-sciences.aspx ?

Monkey2001 · 03/09/2021 00:07

Yes, thanks Cinnamon.

@Zebracat there are the Scottish options if she is up for going that far. You can mix all sorts of things at Edinburgh or St Andrews. They have many more student selected components than English universities.

Thanks @OrangeCinnamonCocktail for the new shiny thread and for tagging me Grin I was really excited to see my name on the list, I wasn’t there last time.

20newnames · 03/09/2021 06:02

Thanks orange

MarchingFrogs · 03/09/2021 06:10

BlueMarigold · 03/09/2021 06:55

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail Thank you for the new thread and for tagging me. I was also really excited to be included 😁

Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2021 07:20

Thank you!

DS not back til Monday. I am grateful for the company and watchful eye!

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 03/09/2021 07:38

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCocktail. Ds had first day back today and a lovely first day back. Can’t believe it’s his last year of school!

SandyBayley · 03/09/2021 07:44

Am here. DD back at school today officially.

She was in yesterday helping out with L6 induction- including DS2. They're looking forward to being together in Sixth Form.

Her UCAS form needs to be submitted on Monday. And her new school shoes have given her blisters 😬

CatMandarin · 03/09/2021 07:46

Hi all, I'd like to start following this thread as dd is going into year 13. She's doing Biology, maths and French and a Biology based EPQ. She was saying she wanted to do Biology at Uni but now not sure. I've been helping her look at unis and she's booked some visits.

NCTDN · 03/09/2021 07:46

Thanks for the new thread.
UCAS form in by Monday?ShockShock

Seeline · 03/09/2021 07:51

Thanks for the thread.

DDs school want the whole UCAS application ready to go on 23 September!! That's everyone, Oxbridge/med etc us the week before

SandyBayley · 03/09/2021 07:56

She's applying for Oxford and Medicine @NCTDN - her school crack in with both Oxbridge and Medicine very early. The early admissions date is15 October I think.

Fastforwardtospring · 03/09/2021 07:59

Joining -thanks, DS going into year 13 and absolutely no idea what he wants to do, will be looking at degree apprenticeships I think, doesn’t want to go to Uni. He’s a bright lazy boy when it comes to studying, although last 3 weeks he’s had a full time summer job and more or less jumps out of bed in the morning to go so working whilst studying will be his best route I think but interesting to join this thread for other views.

ProggyMat · 03/09/2021 08:00

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCocktail
DDs UCAS has to be completed by 8th October as she’s applying to Oxford

whoamitojudge · 03/09/2021 08:15

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail Thank you for including me in this new thread as a non uni parent 😂
DD is back to college next week and currently suffering with a cold. She’s had a negative LFT yesterday and will do another one today before work just in case

Volterra · 03/09/2021 08:40

Thank you Orange

DS doesn’t want to think about university and doesn’t want to resist any exams this autumn in case he does worse than the summer. I mentioned a year out but he doesn’t want to think about that either.

icanbewhatiwant · 03/09/2021 08:51

Ds went off in his car to school. I was waiting for him to ask if I'd drive him as he's been so reluctant to drive. I saw he'd taken the P plates off. DH is away. I know he will insist they go back on the car when he gets back.

Ds told me he'd finished his EPQ I don't know whether he will let us see it though.

Now I'm just looking forward to ds3 going back to school (year 8) on Thursday.

estherfrewen · 03/09/2021 09:05

Thanks for the new thread. DS not back until Wednesday. Has got job interview for part time job next week - swim school assistant 6 hours on a Saturday. He's turned two jobs down as lifeguard as I said too many hours working for year 13. He cant wait to go back to school

BlueMarigold · 03/09/2021 09:16

@CatMandarin Hi! My DD wants to do Biology too. Where is your DD looking to visit?

AnneOfCleavage · 03/09/2021 09:32

Thanks for the new thread Orange and I see you have a fancy new add on to your name 😁

This is why I suggested to DD that she wear her new shoes in a bit before she embarks on her daily long walk to school and back SandyBayley but they know best don't they Wink Think they are in the exact same position they were in when we bought them last month.

Are you back to school on Monday Piggy? Hope you're gaining strength day by day now. What a rough time of it you've had.

CatMandarin · 03/09/2021 09:33
@CatMandarin Hi! My DD wants to do Biology too. Where is your DD looking to visit?
Hi, she's visiting Nottingham, Southampton, Surrey, Royal Holloway. I think Bristol and York are doing virtual. We'll be using coach/public transport. Which are you visiting?
