@Monkey2001 Nowt like Grange Hill and ‘Just Say No’
Meanwhile, and Lord! How quick does our Corona Cohort’s move on?
@OrangeCinnamonCocktail We need a new thread?
And, of course thread titles?

Piggywaspushed · 20/09/2021 19:55

Bristol often causes big rows on some MN threads! It can literally get nasty!

DS has not expressed any interest in it, although it's good for social policy , so that's one over protective mother issue set to one side. Leeds also high in league tables but it's virtual open day for social policy was a shambles.

No kids I have taught have gone to Bristol so I can't judge, really. DH went to Leeds and was vvvvv sporty . No signs of a drug culture back then and not heard kids at school talk about it, although they do pick it for its nightlife quite a lot. For kids my way NTU is the party party party uni.

Hopeful201 · 20/09/2021 19:57

Drugs are a huge worry, my DS is madly into working out and rugby so my hope is he continues in the same way.
We had a busy weekend, trying to complete my DS PS and his med school choices. It all seems very real now. We don't get predicted grades until a bit later.

icanbewhatiwant · 20/09/2021 20:07

I'm definitely not streetwise. As I said above I don't even drink....never been drunk. Never smoked. I've never seen anyone smoking weed...or not that I've known about anyway. Ds1 said only today that he didn't know it was normal that couples drink a bottle of wine with their dinner regularly. I'm not anti alcohol, I just don't like it. I'll have a glass of wine once or twice a year to be social...but it's just like drinking vinegar to me. DH would like wine more often, but he's not a beer fan.

Piggywaspushed · 20/09/2021 20:12

We now have a PS of 3995 characters!!

ProggyMat · 20/09/2021 20:18

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail we need a new thread
And, title ideas!
Anyone?

Monkey2001 · 20/09/2021 20:18

Piggy well done to your DS, but I seen to remember that when you paste it into UCAS there are some things which UCAS count as characters which Word don't. Maybe returns? Hope you don't find that there are 6 more characters in the UCAS count.

@Hopeful201 your DS sounds just like mine - they could end up on a medsoc rugby team together, but probably only if your DS guess for Newcastle. If it helps, the very good gym is right next to the medical school!

NCTDN · 20/09/2021 20:19

@icanbewhatiwant I too just don't like alcohol and world much prefer a cup of tea Blush I'm oblivious to people smoking weed or whatever around me. DH is amazed I don't notice these things...

LOVING the tea-aholics! I also rarely drink alcohol because I don't particularly like it and it makes me feel sick. Couldn't give up tea though.Brew

Suppose, that would be the same as licit and illicit drugs? And of course ‘medically sanctioned’ junkies ? Meanwhile, is anyone going to start a new thread?
crazycrofter · 20/09/2021 20:45

I’m not streetwise either really, I only came across weed at uni, when all my housemates were partaking, but I didn’t! But I can’t believe Birmingham is the only place where the smell of weed has overtaken tobacco? I literally never smell tobacco now, but we’ve had weed smell drifting in from neighbours’ gardens and often smell it on our local walks. And lots of dd’s friends smoke it. It seems classless too - it was common at parties at her independent school from year 9/10 but the teens hanging round my brother’s council estate smoke it constantly too. Maybe it is just Birmingham!

One of my brothers went to Leeds - and is the only one of us (as far as I know!) to have taken drugs.

My dd’s personal statement doesn’t have to be in until after half term, so I imagine she won’t think about it until the Saturday before she goes back!

@Oblomov21 your ds does seem to have had extreme side effects. I remember my nose bled a bit when I blew it but not otherwise. Dd had the odd headache, but neither of us felt different when we were taking it. Ds is on 40mg. So far he’s just had a couple of headaches, but he’s prone to them anyway.

icanbewhatiwant · 20/09/2021 20:45

@NCTDN we were visiting DH's dd a few months ago near Brighton and walked past a man on a bench, dh and his dd commented on how they could smell his weed. I usually have a good sense of smell..but I couldn't smell it at all, wasn't sure what smell I should smell.

Shimy · 20/09/2021 20:59

Just checking in this evening and I've obviously lived a very sheltered life. Heart pounding with panic just reading about coke and heroin being done in flats etc. I had no idea it was quite this bad! I thought drugs at uni meant outsiders peddling by street corners around the university or a few off the rails students dealing secretly. I've never even seen drugs except on tv and only knew 2 people who smoked Indian hemp. Is this what ds2 has to look forward to? i am so worried now because he has MH issues and is already worried about not fitting in. He's had all the drugs talk at home and we've told him not to ever accept any or make friends with such individuals but it sounds overwhelming having it all being dished out in your flat.

Piggywaspushed · 20/09/2021 21:25

If that happens monkey, I shall throw things. And then remove some random the or a somewhere...

stoneysongs · 20/09/2021 21:29

Just had a thought @20newnames
maybe Southampton or Loughborough for engineering?

And for a new thread may I offer up Corona Cohort: Statements Scripted, Grades Predicted

I like that! I was thinking, UCAS predictions, Uni applications ( don’t want to say ‘dodging isolations Hmm)so it’s gotta end with what’s the plan Nad?
20newnames · 20/09/2021 21:47

Thanks @singingstones will check those out.

PaddingtonPaddington · 20/09/2021 21:52

Worryingly reading the comments about Leeds.

DD and I visited RWCMD in Cardiff. DD got a tour (students only) and got to ask questions. We both loved Cardiff and it’s her favourite over Leeds.

DD managed to dictate her PS and I typed it up. Too long (as I thought it was 4000 characters plus spaces) but being reviewed at school so hopefully they can give some pointers.

Still waiting on predicted grades.

11 days till the UCAS conservatoires deadline!

ProggyMat · 20/09/2021 22:00

Should add that DDs PS has not been scripted

Great thread title @singingstones!

So, a flurry of activity this weekend and ds is finally starting to get his choices sorted (comp sci) but he has a bit of an aspirational set, and needs to find a couple of safe bets now! He's been in avoidance mode, and got all excited again so that was lovely to see: third draft of PS nearly done and looking much, much stronger. Thanks in no small part to that excellent Oxford kiiller statement link: thanks again to whoever put that up.

He's decided to put having a punt at Cambridge back into the mix, and is seriously considering St Andrews - I'm still not sure how he'd cope that far away, although otherwise I think its perfect for him. Warwick and Bath also strong contenders. So he really needs to decide on something a bit more in the A/B parkland. Any suggestions for somewhere which is ideally: strongish on Comp Sci; campus/green; not too party focused??

(On the drugs front, ex-Leeds student here, although obv a million years ago: was around, but certainly not everywhere/a key part of the culture. Ds doesn't drink, and I can't see him liking the idea of drugs or being the type to succumb to peer pressure. He'll want to find a group of board-game playing, bird-watchers, which i suspect doesn't overlap hugely with the coke-ket gang ;-)

Piggywaspushed · 20/09/2021 22:56

York for Comp Sci?
