Thanks @ealingwestmum! Yes he really enjoyed it. Hopefully ready to put his head down and work incredibly hard until mocks.

If anyone has questions about student life at Birngham or Sheffield I can try and answer them as have older kids at uni/recently graduated…

Birmingham has been particularly good during Covid I think.

Delphigirl · 03/09/2021 17:40

Please to hear it piggy. Need to cosset yourself a bit and v important to take things easy and slow I think. Don’t rush back to full speed.

Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2021 17:50

Thanks delphi. Will try...

Am signed off til Thursday next week but may dip my toe in the water and see how I do for a few lessons.

Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2021 17:55

Birmingham is definitely a top 3 choice for DS. He liked the campus a lot and the course he has his eye on. We were a bit taken aback by how far away the accommodation was tbh, given it's called a 'campus university' (he plays a v large musical instrument so this does have implications!) and I thought that Selly Oak would be nicer than it looked. I have nudged him towards Sheffield but he seems keener on courses in Glasgow and Edinburgh which I think are just too far away.

ZittiEBuoni · 03/09/2021 18:00

I've dipped in and out (depending on whether lockdowns were in force) and would like to join in properly now y13 has started.

Dd had a difficult year 12, she is on the autism spectrum and struggled with anxiety and some other issues. Was thinking of going for English at one of the v good RG universities in our region but her mock results were ABC - and the C was in English - so we're thinking that's not now too realistic a prospect.

She's considering Philosophy (the A was in RS), maybe somewhere like Brighton or Surrey. But she's also considering taking a year out and applying with A level results in hand.

It's all very confusing as she has missed so much school and tutor time with one thing and another and we feel as if we're playing with half a deck of cards.

Hopefully all will become much clearer very soon!

Ooh, thanks, OrangeCinnamonCocktail (making me thirsty!), will pass that link along to dd.

Hattifatteners · 03/09/2021 18:28

Thank you for the new thread. Trying to catch up...

EwwSprouts · 03/09/2021 18:44

Late to the party as ever! Thanks Orange for a smooth transfer.

Piggy Great to hear you are on the up.

Loving that more people are joining and with DC exploring options such as oceans and philosophy. So interesting to hear about the different paths and places.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 03/09/2021 18:55

Take care of yourself @Piggywaspushed

Sorry to hear about DS @JustHereWithMyPopcorn.

It's going to be a bumpy ride I think.

Crikey this has filled up quickly :-)

Anyone know what you are supposed to do if say theoretically a 17 yr old tested positive for Covid early August (was a little but low but ok after a week), Went off to Leeds festival, came home exhausted and now feeling rough with sore neck (she said from having no pillow) feeling like she has a cold but no blocked nose. Now normally I would send her for a PCR just to be sure, but she can't as not supposed to be tested for 90 days after having covid. So how do we know she is ok to go out and back to school on Monday? I think she is run down and has a cold (not a great way to start school) but how can I be sure and safe?? for info when she tested positive early August, she had a temperature, headache and felt sick (all signs for that age group).

Heifer · 03/09/2021 18:58

Forgot to say - welcome to the newbies and welcome back to those returning.
Will now go and catch up :-)

Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2021 19:03

Heifer, she most likely overdid it a bit like I did. Her immune system is still fragile. Do NOT PCR her at any cost! Or even a LFT. Lots of fluid and paracetamol and rest...

ZittiEBuoni · 03/09/2021 19:04

Sorry to hear about your dd, Heifer, with any luck it's just post-festival fatigue and she'll recover over the weekend. I think given her v recent Covid dx, I would strongly assume it isn't that. But it's so hard to know for sure, isn't it?

BlueMarigold · 03/09/2021 19:09

I hope your DD feels better soon @Heifer

Delphigirl · 03/09/2021 19:20

Hi Piggy
The halls in Vale village which are closer to the main buildings at Brum are not far away at all, eg tennis courts. You could carry a cello to and fro alright (I was a cello carrier for years) but probably not a double bass. Shelly oak is a dump but strangely much loved and no worse than eg fallowfield in Manchester which I accept is a low bar.

We went to look around Glasgow at May half term when DS was thinking about Geog/environmental geoscience and I have to say it was fantastic. What a great city and I preferred it to edinburgh by a long way, which I was not expecting. Fewer tourists, less tartan tat. University really nice and in best bit of Glasgow - west end is beautiful snd fab and full of independent shops snd cafes and small cinemas and second hand book and record shops. So much going on.

Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2021 19:45

Thanks! He has a euphonium so certainly not a double bass...

I am from Glasgow as it goes! I would always agree that its far better than Edinburgh Grin

Delphigirl · 03/09/2021 19:52

Phew, I’m glad I didn’t say the opposite Grin

Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2021 19:56

I would have come for you in the dead of night....

Oblomov21 · 03/09/2021 19:59

Thanks OP.

Welcome back Delphi!

Thanks for new thread

Fferny1 · 03/09/2021 20:11

Has anyone heard any governmental updates on 16-18 year olds second vaccine? I don't believe I have, but our county is now offering drop in clinics for this age group, for first & second jabs.
Welcome to all the new posters 💐
I can help with any queries re. Bristol Uni & Vet Medicine.
DD is Covid clear so we will be ok to fly tomorrow thank god. I feel like a complete travel virgin having not gone anywhere for the last two years.

BlueMarigold · 03/09/2021 20:12

@Delphigirl my DD is interested in both Birmingham and Sheffield. Any information about either would be great. She is unsure about Sheffield because all the others are campus unis.

Zebracat · 03/09/2021 20:16

Well, I thought I posted , but it seems not to be here. Just to thank the people who made suggestions. We had found the Exeter Course and will apply. Scotland is a bit far from her Devon heartland, but the Birmingham course looks great, and We’ve also found something similar at UCL so we may be getting things together.
