captain - I am, indeed, a non-negotiable Wink

TheThird - awww, you are very kind. I send best wishes to your DS for his driving test. DD suffers badly with anxiety, so found her test hard - but didn't have the added challenge of dyspraxia. She had a "minor" quite early on and was convinced she's failed - she actually said it helped her relax as she was sure she'd failed and therefore nothing else mattered - but she passed! I hope some similar good fortune may happen to your DS.

captainoftheshipwreck · 12/09/2018 19:59

DD informs me it is because it is an ADULT utensil and not a student one.
Best wishes to your son Third.

Chocolate, I'm so pleased for your dd.

Chocolate so glad its going well for your DD. Our first proper grown up!

UrsulaPandress · 12/09/2018 20:51

Instant mash!!!

Thought of you lot as I mashed spuds to go with a sausage and bean casserole.

I do sometimes use an electric mixer a la Delia.

TheThirdOfHerName · 12/09/2018 20:54

Starting to realise that I am probably not yet a proper adult by the standards of this thread. Grin

captainoftheshipwreck · 12/09/2018 21:02

The standards are very high. I did once own a smoothie maker.

Knittinganewme · 12/09/2018 21:58

I got rid of the smoothie maker. I now have a stick blender that does smoothies and has a spice mill attachment for making my own garam masala. Proper grown up I am.

chocolateworshipper · 12/09/2018 22:05

raspberry does that make me the elder of the group?! But thank you Smile

Potato mashers are absolutely fine, but DH went too far when he bought an egg-slicer Confused

captainoftheshipwreck · 12/09/2018 22:09

Off the scale

BagelGoesWalking · 12/09/2018 22:17

Had an angry moment y'day evening when DD told me she hadn't taken her ID photo (needed to do the induction stuff online). I'd forgotten about it and was annoyed.

All good today, she did it and has now chosen her 1st year modules (Biomed). The online booking for a slot on moving in day isn't working so couldn't do that. Off to Asda tomorrow to pick up a few things we didn't find on the last trip (chopping boards, colander, sieve & potato masher!). She's off enjoying Arctic Monkeys at the O2 tonight.

raspberryrippleicecream · 12/09/2018 23:09

chocolate absolutely!

DD has taken her smoothie maker. She has left her avocado gadget in the kitchen drawer though. Surely students can't afford avocados anyway?

She did consider buying a stickblender as well as she uses mine a lot (vegan so think cashew cheese etc) but decided to see what cooking she will do.

DH is staying in halls of residence tonight - he's at a conference at Nottingham Trent. Apparently the staff there are all gearing up to be busy next week!

Knitting are you off tomorrow? Good luck

GnomeDePlume · 13/09/2018 06:04

D(eparture) day is the day after tomorrow for us. That sounds awfully close. DH took DD2 out to get a 'sensible' coat yesterday. Going to try and get jeans today.

Not sure if she has a masher. I have lost track. No doubt we will get there and find there is something totally obvious that we have forgotten.

PandaG · 13/09/2018 07:27

Discussed budgeting with DS last night, as he will have a food bill for food consumed in the autumn term at the beginning of the Spring term. He rolled his eyes at me, informed me he had already installed a budget tracker app, said he had enough cushion to pay his accommodation while waiting for the loan to come through (saved himself) and he wouldn't go mad. Here's hoping!

starfleet · 13/09/2018 08:25

There is an awful lot of talk of potato mashers.....I don't have one but do have an egg slicer from the 70's which is still in good working order.

DS has managed to cram about 3 weeks of socialising into one so I've have hardly seen him as he's either been at work or out. Each time he goes to meet his friends it's alway "but it will be the last time we'll see each other until Christmas". Two of them are visiting him next week during freshers 🙄!

LoniceraJaponica · 13/09/2018 08:27

Don't you need wrist bands and ID to join in the freshers events?

UrsulaPandress · 13/09/2018 08:59

I have two egg slicers and use them frequently.

A friend of DD's is also planning on visiting next week. I wish she wasn't to be honest as she is a bit of a limelight hogger.

flatmouse · 13/09/2018 08:59

Got DS to do budget last night so we could discuss how much of maintenance loan he should pay us towards accommodation. For food, he thought that £80 per week would be reasonable. Oh how we laughed! Made him do eg meal plan for week then look up price per portion for each. Came out (done very generously) at £30 per week.
A freshers wristband (at DS university) would have given energy to all freshers weeks events at a discount, he missed out buying but not interested in all events so wouldn't have saved him anything.

flatmouse · 13/09/2018 08:59

Entry not energy!

Bekabeech · 13/09/2018 09:11

While my Dd is starting her volunteering, has started to learn a language and is thinking of trying sub-aqua , and getting back into an Art. All quite exciting.
We did buy a care plan for her computer and asked about changing the address as she will be moving in the next 3 years.

Good luck with empty nests and duvet covers.

TheThirdOfHerName · 13/09/2018 09:16

Don't you need wrist bands and ID to join in the freshers events?
Over 18 ID: definitely, if it's at a club.
Student ID: possibly; not sure if they'd bother checking.
Wristband: usually you can pay on the door for each event. Not everyone buys the wristband.

TheThirdOfHerName · 13/09/2018 09:18

DS1 has already invited friends up to stay on two different weekends in October. But the events they'll be going to are not part of the Freshers 'week'

LoniceraJaponica · 13/09/2018 09:34

DD's best friend has demanded that she goes and visits her as soon as she is settled. DD needs a bit of partying in her life right now.

starfleet · 13/09/2018 10:24

One is a student by doesn't start until the week after so had ID and the other isn't right now Bynum sure they will figure something out.

Those of you who have vacuum packed. How does it affect the pillows and duvets when they come out at the other end? Does it make them flat? Or do they spring back into shape?

starfleet · 13/09/2018 10:26

*but! I don't know what that random word beginning with B is in previous post!!!
