Had too many drinks last night whilst out with the girls. Have got into a bad habit of having a drink every day too. Wondered if anyone would like to join a mutual support group?!!

hmmm.... was thinking, having just joined the gym, I ought to stop drinking during the week as we tend to end up having a bottle of wine a night so I may be tempted to join...... but its just sooooo hard...... How did I do it when pg ??

compo · 17/08/2005 11:07

That's what I always ask myself!! If I manged it for nine months I should be able to now!!

Ok.. lets do it - what are the rules ?? I don't want to abstain at weekends (which includes Friday, Saturday AND Sunday !!).....

TwoIfBySea · 17/08/2005 21:17

A word of support here, from someone who used to drink socially but now doesn't touch a drop at all. Believe me, after a while you don't miss drinking at all and begin to wonder why you bothered with the stuff in the first place!

WideWebWitch · 17/08/2005 21:25

I've been only drinking at weekends for the past 3 weeks but have been forced into it as am staying with teetotal ex ils in the week. Still, it does feel nice! So I don't drink atm on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Gosh, just realised it would have been a lot easier to type the days I DO drink, blimey, never thought that would happen! I'm finding it easy actually ! But hey, I guess I know I'm so knackered after work that I couldn't get through the day if I'd been drinking anything the night before.

hopefull2 · 17/08/2005 21:31

Go on and count me in too. Fri, Sat and Sun out too. Have you all decided the criteria, rules, regulations ect

Will promise to try and do it

cleverclogs · 17/08/2005 22:01

I would like to join you too if I can, drink a good two thirds bottle wine each evening and have tried before to cut down but it always creeps up again.

Trying to stick to just fri and sat evenings and managed well this week, until tonight.

Children are away with family and missing them, maybe thats why...

Hope Newleaf finds us on here aswell, i think she would appreciate the support

unicorn · 17/08/2005 22:06

I'm on week 3 of nil by mouth (alcohol wise!!)

I too was getting a little too used to drinking every night,so, I thought I would see if I could give it up totally (summer holidays and all!!!!)

So far, so good.. it actually seems easier to me to give up, rather than try and do weekends only, so will see how long I can do it for.

Good luck everyone!!!

cleverclogs · 17/08/2005 22:07

good luck unicorm - you have mre will power than me

HondaDream · 18/08/2005 09:17

Can I join too? I did give up for a month after a rathter bad night out which ended in tears so I know I can do it but after a hard day with the kids....I easily drink two or three glasses most nights dh wants to quit too but we are a bad influence on each other if I quit I won't even drink at the weekends, btw when I did stop I felt great and had tonnes more energy......plus I lost 2 kilos

newleaf · 18/08/2005 22:28

Thanks charliecat for pointing me towards this thread...

Am on day 6 of no booze after realising I've been drinking too much for too long, am all hangovered out. I'm aiming to stay off for a reasonable time (not sure how long, can't face thought of 'forever'!) just to prove to myself that I can survive quite happily without alcohol.
Please count me in.

(first 3 days were really hard, but it's getting easier every day)

HondaDream · 19/08/2005 09:17

had atiny glass of beer last night ( just abit out of DH bottle)

I am a heavy drinker and I enjoy a drink but as I said I managed to give up the first week was hard but after that I stopped thinking about it, anyone got any intresting non alcohlic drinks.....

Hattie05 · 19/08/2005 09:19

No i don't want to cut back, i'm just starting to enjoy it again .

Before dd i used to enjoy a beer or a glass of wine most evenings. Since having her i hardly ever drink except for the odd binge drink when out with the girls.

Last night for the first time i sat in the garden with a beer, house was peaceful and i really enjoyed myself! ahh.

But i wish those of you cutting back all the luck!

lilibet · 19/08/2005 09:21

I gave up for 50 days earlier in the year. Very proud of myself for doing it and those who knew me were amazed that I did with the amount that I drank.

But it was awful
I can't cut down either - it's all or nothing for me

newleaf · 19/08/2005 10:38

I'm a feeling much less jittery and anxious after a week off the booze. Have been have really weird deep deep sleep & wild dreams - anyone else noticed that?

Perhaps it's all the toxins flooding out... non alcoholic drinks? Am getting by with vast amounts of green and chamomile tea. How, um,exciting...That Ame stuff is okay - looks like wine at least!

unicorn · 19/08/2005 20:27

Find most non alco drinks to be very sweet.. so stick to water ok but does get a bit boring.. so suggestions welcome here too.

I think I'm doing ok so far (not speaking too soon)because I have not had any spare bottles of wine in the house,to tempt me.

I also did something last week which for me is fairly unimaginable. I had just 1 drink in the pub with pals and it was water !!!

I left shortly afterwards though as I may have caved in to the shock/horror, and questions of was I preggers!!!!
How's everyone doing?

newleaf · 22/08/2005 21:36

Water... in the pub?! Am in awe of your strength unicorn!

I had two glasses of red wine on fri night, same on sat night, which felt nice - not the total booze ban I planned but am thinking that moderation could be far preferable and pleasurable too. Have switched from white to red cos I guzzle white. Am trying to learn to be a sipper, not a glugger... trying to change habits really.

(hope this doesn't count as a 'failure' girls! A, going to try to limit booze to fri and sat nights only)...

How is everyone else?

Tallgirl · 23/08/2005 16:43

Been doing this since beg August (also to lose weight) had couple of glasses on Sat night but that is it. Can agree with others that dont really miss it that much - except perhaps on weekends. I too was getting into the habit of kids to bed - open the bottle! Havent noticed as much weight loss as hoped though!

Probably have a glass or two this weekend as eataing out on Sat night for DH's birthday and it is bank holiday weekend.

greenbean · 23/08/2005 16:51

good idea to cut down on wine, will try weekend drinking, does Thursday count?

greenbean · 26/08/2005 15:47

Compo - this is week 3 of me and dp cutting out 2 nights per week (Weds and Thurs) but we still drink way in excess of the saftey levels each week.

I don't understand why we do it - I always feel way better after a night off it..

Hazellnut · 01/09/2005 11:52

mUM2girls - I know exactly what you mean but it always seems a good idea at the time !!

I failed dismally in the first couple of weeks but have managed 2 nights so far this week (obviously monday being a bank holiday counted as the weekend ). Thankfully its almost friday !!
