Coke? Ham? Confused!

Guadalupe · 24/12/2008 13:31

I did it yesterday. It's very nice but not sure if it's THAT much better. I hated the smell of it boiling!

AmIWhatAndWhy · 24/12/2008 13:31

I've never cooked it but had it done in cherry coke at my aunts house and it was lovely!

Guadalupe · 24/12/2008 13:31

Hi Wilkie

It's a nigella recipe, the coke makes it dark and sweet, a bit like using molasses.

Parumpapumfumf · 24/12/2008 13:33

how do you do it? (Have just bunged ham in stock to boil...)

TsarHumbug · 24/12/2008 13:33

It's a Nigella recipe Tinsel, mentioned on mn often.

It sounds bizarre I know, but it's sooo yummy.

You basically simmer gammon in coke for a couple of hours and it gives it a lovely sweet unusual flavour.

just use coke instead of stock, fmv, or you can add some to your stock.

I didn't have treacle for the glaze so I used maply syrup. Very nice.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 24/12/2008 13:34

Mine is simmering away now.

Does anyone know if you can use this recipe on a smoked gammon joint?

TsarHumbug · 24/12/2008 13:37

I used a different glaze too (mustard and sugar); as Guadalupe says it can be whatever you like.

OP posts:
TsarHumbug · 24/12/2008 13:39

I don't see why not. It would taste more smokey is all I guess.

Isaidkissmeunderthemistletoe · 24/12/2008 13:54

Just thinking about getting mine out of the slow cooker and sorting the glaze

LaDiDaDi · 24/12/2008 13:55

Going to start mine once I drag myself away from here.

Mine is smoky, dp and I couldn't remember what we used last year but he wanted to try smoky. Hope it's nice (though I'm veggie so won't be eating it anyway! lol).

MissusHoHoHo · 24/12/2008 14:04

mine is on the hob now - not using cloves though, just the glaze...
