Damn, I forgot about food for the kids for their tea.

nkf · 24/12/2008 16:04

Not this year but I have done it. Delicious. Cherry coke an interesting idea.

TheChristmasArmadillo · 24/12/2008 16:05

I did 3 small ones. I cook for longer in the coke and don't bother glazing as it tends to end up a bit dry if I do that.

nkf · 24/12/2008 16:06

I might buy one for later. I imagine hams become really cheap after Christmas.

SummatAnNowt · 24/12/2008 16:17

Not me, I do Nigella's aromatic spiced ham... mmmmmm.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 24/12/2008 16:18

We've just eaten ours with red onion and feta risotto and stir-fried cabbage. Lovely.

chloemegjess · 24/12/2008 16:27

I have got a gammon joint in the fridge and plan to try out the coke recipe after Christmas. Is it ok for babies do you think? A 1 year old? She never eats much meat anyway and mainly likes the veg.

How do you do it slow cooker wise with coke? I usually slow cook Gammon, but don't put any liquid in, just shove the gammon in on its own and it tastes better than in oven.

If you are simmering it on hob in coke, do you then do it in the oven after?

I love Gammon/ham, probably my fav meat.

SpaceTrain · 24/12/2008 16:28

how long do you put it in the slow cooker for? I never thought about using that.

SueW · 24/12/2008 16:28

I won't be doing it again. I'd rather just go for plain old boiling!

nowtygaffer · 24/12/2008 16:32

I thought it was a bit overrated myself..

VanillaPumpkin · 24/12/2008 16:35

I cooked mine in apple juice and cranberry juice a la Nigellas Festive Ham but then glazed it as per the Coke recipe with treacle and mustard powder etc. Yummy!
Cost a bloody fortune though , £30, nearly more than my turkey!

TsarHumbug · 24/12/2008 16:51

Ooh LadyGlencora red onion and feta risotto! I must say that sounds pretty damn good.

chocolateteapot · 24/12/2008 16:54

I did a 2.2kg one for 4 hours on high, one hour on low in the slow cooker. BUT I have never done this before so I haven't got a clue if that is OK. It's now in the oven so I'll know shortly !

nkf · 24/12/2008 16:56

Yes, I want the recipe for red onion and feta risotto. Hot to eat with ham though. Rice and ham doesn't sound too good. But risotto sounds yummy.

chloemegjess · 24/12/2008 17:30

chocolate - why do you need to put in oven if you have cooked it in the slow cooker? Wondering if I am missing something?

Amapoleon · 24/12/2008 17:32

I change the glaze. I use syrup brown sugar and wholegrain mustard. Tis v delicious.

chocolateteapot · 24/12/2008 17:34

It's for the glaze bit at the end, chloemegjess. You cut the fat off, whack some treacle, mustard and sugar on and blast it in the oven for 10 mins or so until the sugar melts.

Am eating it now and it is pretty good. Think I would change the glaze though next time.

chloemegjess · 24/12/2008 17:40

Oh ok. Do you do this even if done in coke?

Leda · 24/12/2008 17:47

I did this last year, nice, but a bit too sweet for me.

chocolateteapot · 24/12/2008 17:48

Yes, I think it is part of Nigella's recipe. I think that it's probably important not to leave it in too long, it took about 20 mins till it all melted on mine and I reckon that was a bit long as it it a bit drier than when it went in.

MissisBoot · 24/12/2008 17:55

We had it in cherry coke for lunch - tonnes left over for dh to eat whilst at work this week.

MrsMuddle · 24/12/2008 18:23

Mine has boiled, but I've yet to glaze.

But I read the label, and it serves 18! There are 8 of us, and we have a goose too, so we'll be having ham for the next week.

expatinscotland · 24/12/2008 18:23

Am doing it for new year.

Myrrhcy · 24/12/2008 18:25

Me for Boxing Day.

Thanks for posting the recipe Tsarchasm - I have just been in a flap looking for mine

Lubyloo · 26/12/2008 21:39

Have made this for the first time today and very pleased with it. Just wondering if any of you have ever done anything with the leftover stock/cola? I kept it as the recipe instructed but I'm at a loss as to what to do with coke that has been boiled for several hours?!
