Just done mine. God it looks gooood And once again I wonder why I only seem to do this once a year.

I boiled red cabbage in the left over stock last year and it was nice.

This year I did the gingerglazed ham which was gorgeous too- difficult to say which I preferred - cherry coke or ginger ale - both were so yummy!

I did mine in cranberry juice which was also Nigella and also yummy! Left a bit too much fat on the ham for the glaze though.

Lubyloo · 26/12/2008 22:09

I think I left too much fat on as well.

I love red cabbage so think I might try doing that AuntieMaggie. Thanks for the suggestion

Heated · 26/12/2008 22:11

It was delish and I'm not usually a fan, especially of cloves.

Oh by the way don't remove all the fat after it's been boiled/simmered in coke (has to be full fat coke): peel off the outer skin to leave a thin layer of fat, score in a diamond pattern ready for the cloves and glaze.

Heated · 26/12/2008 22:13

Yep i wondered about the leftover coke which in the recipe said not to throw away - I wondered if it was for suggested partner dish, the sweetcorn something or other?

delightedoldbag34 · 26/12/2008 22:20

I did mine in Cherry Coke with cherry and red wine vinegar glaze. IS FABULOUS, WILL BE MAKING IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR!

hockeypuck · 29/12/2008 17:55

I did mine in regular coke in the slow cooker for 4 hours and then just put it in oven on high for 20 minutes to give the outside a little crispiness. It was absolutely delicious.

BUT, can anyone with a slowcooker advise me? how do I stop it falling apart into stringy sections when it comes out of the slowcooker? I had this problem when I made beef stew with a whole joint of beef too. It was lvoely and tender but carved into long thin strongs rather than decent slices.

delightedoldbag34 · 29/12/2008 19:36

honeypuck I think that is is falling apart into stringy sections perhaps because you've cooked it a bit too long? I can't advise re: slowcooker because I don't have one but I cooked my 4.7kg joint (with small knuckle type bone in) for just about 5 hours and when I lifted it out of the saucepan the bone just FELL OUT - literally without me having to touch it at all. So I think mine was slightly overcooked too (and some of the outer pieces were 'stringy'. But it was still absolutely delicious. I think next time I'd get the same size joint but maybe cook it for 15-20 mins less. (I also then put it in the oven on a high heat to do the glaze for about 10 mins).
Heated Am sure Nigella recommends keeping the coke 'stock' and using it for making a black bean soup (from memory) although I've never tried the recipe as I just thought 'yuck!'. I've also made the sweetcorn pudding she recommends to go with it but wasn't keen on that either. This time I made the chilli jam, roast potatoes, the fully loaded pototo skins (yum) and served it with lots of pickled onions, gerkins and other pickled stuff. Went down a storm with the in-laws! Delish.

hockeypuck · 29/12/2008 20:54

thanks delightedoldbag - I'll reduce the time a little and see what occurs

Heated · 29/12/2008 20:58

thanks DOB34, am off to investigate loaded potato skins now!

nannyL · 29/12/2008 23:40
