I know that some people out there must like fruit cooked with savoury foods, but none of us like it, and I quite frankly think it is odd.

I mean, who on earth thought that lemon would taste nice on fish or infused with chicken, or that roast pork should have apple sauce with it....

maybe it is just me, but seriously, it tastes awful!

and I can say this because tonight I cooked a roast chicken basted in garlic and lemon. I could not taste any garlic (altho I like it strong and so I do think I have broken mine and every elses taste buds regarding garlic), but the lemon taste was really strong and off putting.

Lemon is fine, imo, but don't get me started on farking raisins in currys or pineapple on pizzas.

PsychoGuyFawkesMum · 05/11/2008 19:11

ooh yes, forgot those

Nope, you are sane and normal, which is not something that I will say very often

I am perplexed when DH spreads what amounts to cranberry jam on his turkey. Bleurgh.

HeadFairy · 05/11/2008 19:12

I quite like lemon on chicken but totally agree with the apple sauce with roast pork... bleurgh. And mint sauce with lamb, now that is grim! In fact mint in anything savoury is

nickytwotimes · 05/11/2008 19:12

Uuuggghhh! Cranberries!

ComeOVeneer · 05/11/2008 19:13

I do lemon with fish/chicken because it isn't sweet. Don't like cherry/apple/orange/plum etc.

AuraofDora · 05/11/2008 19:14

dont eat meat but love fish and with lemon
but agree ntt, raisins in curry and pineapple on pizzas borders on equals culinary criminal imho
cuff em, jamie..

Goober · 05/11/2008 19:15

You are strange. All of ya.
A hawian pizza HAS to have pineapple on it, as does my own pizza, with tuna. Gammon and pineapple. Durrr.
Raisins in curry is genius.
Lemon is neccesary with fish and chicken.

tee hee!

PsychoGuyFawkesMum · 05/11/2008 19:15

I agree lemon isn;t sweet, but it is still not right in my mouth.

not helped tho I have to admit by DD1 saying that it tasted and smelled of the cleaning stuff I use (which is lemon!)

I do like pineapple on pizza but the rest I think is rank. Pineapple is lovely though.

I also put a musched banana in my curry. And coconut.

Goober · 05/11/2008 19:17

Nicky. YOU MISSED!!!

scampadoodle · 05/11/2008 19:17

I love love love lemon on things, & lime - especially on Thai food. & apple sauce with pork. As long as it's quite sour.

But
I loathe things like raisins, bananas, dried apricots in a savoury environment. They are too sweet.

Goober · 05/11/2008 19:18

And that, Psycho, is why I fart so much!

mazzystartled · 05/11/2008 19:18

ouch

rebelmum72 · 05/11/2008 19:18

I think it rather depends on how much of said fruit you put in the dish - if you could actively taste (just) lemon, you might have used too much (or it might have been a particularly potent lemon!).

Sometimes the sweet or citrussy flavour of a fruit really compliments a savoury dish very well eg mango chutney or lime pickle with curry, sweet and sour chinese sauce, cranberry with turkey, plum sauce with peking duck etc etc.

But I do know a few other people who also aren't keen - although I've never met anyone else who objects to lemons before (wouldn't you even use them in a salad dressing?).

Goober · 05/11/2008 19:19

Have you ever had a toasted sandwich with cheese and apple???
Lush, Lush, Lush, Lush!!!!!

nickytwotimes · 05/11/2008 19:20

Hoorah! I got one of you!

littlestrawberry · 05/11/2008 19:20

I have made chicken pieces roasted with lemon and the resulting juices have been far too lemony. On the other hand when roasting a chicken, I will stich a lemon in halves in the cavity and thats a much more subtle and nicer flavour.

Anything else fruity in my meal, no way, yuk, yuk, yuk!!!

PsychoGuyFawkesMum · 05/11/2008 19:22

I cheated with this chicken, was ready basted, but no, I don;t actually like lemon in anything, and nor do my children or DH it seems.

not sure why I got the chicken TBH, but I thought beforehand that the garlic would be the main taste, and the lemon might enhance it......

ROFL @ goober!
