Just for fun (and possibly to see if more people agree with DP or me 🤣)

Vinegar only on the fish. Salt only on the chips. So order doesn't matter. Ketchup on the side. And mushy peas.

RinklyRomaine · 12/07/2026 14:50

Salt first, so it trickles down, then plenty of vinegar and a little more salt so that the top get their fair share. Neither on the fish, it doesn’t need salt if it’s good batter and no one wants it soggy. A huge wally on the side and possibly half a lemon for the inside of the fish. A good mix of soft and crispy chips and a sprinkle of scraps. I’m too hot to eat but I could murder a fish supper from the blue restaurant in Cromer, right now.

If you are randomly anywhere near Camaret Sur Mer I can recommend a place. Stranger things have happened 😂

I have sent you a PM!!

Betadelta · 12/07/2026 15:33

Just salt. No vinegar.

ginasevern · 12/07/2026 15:42

Large cod and chips with a portion of mushy peas. Lots of salt and vinegar on the chips with the vinegar first. Then some salt on the fish but no vinegar because it makes the batter soggy. Tomato sauce goes on the side of the plate to dip my fish into. I'll also need a tub of curry sauce on the side to dip my chips into although sometimes I pour it all over them. I like the old fashioned thick yellow chip shop curry sauce. A lot of places are doing this runnier, dark brown and more tangy version these days which I don't care for. I think they think it's posher. If I'm really hungry I'll also need some well buttered white bread to make chip butties too.

Giant Pickled Onion will provide all the vinegaryness I need. [did I invent a word]

This is the only correct answer

Literally what I came to say. It also has to be chip shop vinegar (the non brewed kind) as malt vinegar just isn’t the one!

user1476613140 · 12/07/2026 16:16

Salt n sauce!

RunningOnCaffeineAndChaos · 12/07/2026 16:28

Vinegar first so the salt isn’t washed away and will also add Gravy ( I’m a midlands girl)

BertieBotts · 12/07/2026 16:44

Well I would only get it put on at the chippy, I wouldn't add my own. It's the best bit! I don't find it goes soggy, not in a way I don't mind Grin I quite like scraping the bits of mushy batter off the paper.

The pros always put vinegar on first. And chip shop vinegar tastes different to the vinegar you can buy at home, so I would always be disappointed not to get the right vinegar. When I was a teenager I had such a vehement argument with my mum about this that she asked the chippy owner next time we went there and he said I was right and that if we brought him an empty vinegar bottle he'd fill it up with chip shop vinegar for us for £1 Grin

There are now youtube videos explaining this but I felt very vindicated at the time.

Enko · 12/07/2026 16:45

Neither. They are salty enough and I don't like the vinegar on them.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/07/2026 19:45

Salt and vinegar in any order and a fuck tonne of tomato ketchup.

OttersOnAPlane · 12/07/2026 19:50

Whichever hasn't been grabbed by one of the others at the table.

The order isn't important, but the amount it. You need absolutely loads of both salt and vinegar.

GisGasGus · 12/07/2026 19:51

I had no idea that people were so regimented, i just use the nearest one first, never knew there would be rules 😂

HoraceCope · 12/07/2026 21:30

i think i do the salt, then search for the vinegar, add the vinegar, then more salt
and squeeze lemon on the fish

CherryogDog · 13/07/2026 08:03

Salt, white pepper, vinegar from the wally jar.
I've been craving fish and chips for ages!

AmazingGreatAunt · 13/07/2026 11:17

Salt on chips, lemon juice on fish, vinegar to dip and homemade tartare sauce. No pount in any healthy veg as it is not a healthy meal, but a once a quarter treat.

LancashireButterPie · 13/07/2026 16:53

Non brewed condiment first, then salt.

NC543210 · 13/07/2026 18:38

Salt first then vinegar but poured out of the m&s pickled onions jar. Mmm

StormGazing · 13/07/2026 19:03

I always pick up noodles from the Chinese next door!! DH said he’s flexible … in fact when we first got together for the first few years we didn’t have a ‘side of the bed’ we just slept where we wanted in the bed …. I know …. Needless to say he has ADHD 🤪

MossMystery · 13/07/2026 19:41

salt, then vinegar, then a little bit more salt 'cos the vinegar washed the first bit down onto the chips below!

FWC2026 · 13/07/2026 19:51

Can't say I've ever thought about it! But trying to think now I think I would put vinegar on first and then salt.

Mine would have been halloumi and chips.
In my fantasy world, that's with white bread, butter, and ketchup.

However, in the real world, I have health issues and I can't eat halloumi and chips and definitely not white bread either🥲🥲

So please, if you are having them have one for me👍🏻

Waitingforthistopass75 · 13/07/2026 20:03

I’ve been ill for days and haven’t fancied eating anything at all. I now really want fish and chips with vinegar first and then salt with some mushy peas.

PickAChew · 13/07/2026 20:07

Just salt with my gluten free fish and chips. Lots of ketchup.

Shelleyblueeyes · 13/07/2026 20:08

Lots of salt (ask at the chip shop and more again at home).
Vinegar
Gherkin
Can of coke (full fat not diet)

I only fancy fish and chips about 3 times a year but when I get a craving - that's it. I'm having it that night.
