Australian here- out of curiosity is marmite very similar to vegemite? For those who've tried both.

Yes & no.

the texture is slightly different (marmite is thicker/stickier & marmite is much more of an intense flavour.

very similar but definitely not the same.

when in NZ I enjoy Vegemite, but miss marmite.

when in the UK & have marmite I don't miss Vegemite.

@PauliesWalnuts I am a bit squeamish about the idea of fruit with fish tbh, but apple sauce with pork, and cranberry with turkey are completely standard (and delicious!)

Fish and lemon is also really traditional (and lovely)

Toast or bagels with cashew nut butter & cherry jam. My DP said I was disgusting then a genius after trying it!

I wish I could find a crunchy cashew butter but all I can find is smooth 😏.

Pistachio spread with vanilla ice cream is amazing and I make a lovely Turkish delight ice cream with pistachio or rose water and rose & lemon Turkish delight.

I am a fish obsessive thanks to working in a fishmongers as a student but you could not pay me enough to eat fish or meat with fruit.

You would hate me then.

I cook smoked haddock in a pan with rice and a mix of water and orange juice.

@RosesAndHellebores try this. Dried apricots soaked overnight, they look a bit like egg yolks.

Put a bit of brie in the hole, wrap in streaky bacon and bake for 10-15 mins.

I think many things can be improved with a dollop of mango chutney, cheese, sandwiches, crackers instead of cheese try it.

Carbonara with salad cream or ketchup on the side. I can’t eat it without one of those condiments. Yet barely eat ketchup with anything you might normally associate such a condiment with.
However there is very little that doesn’t benefit from a bit of salad cream.. in my opinion of course.

Honestly. Its best either thr nice chickpeas, like the bold ones, but also works with the cheap 50p ones. I made dome this week, added some toasted flaked almonds too. Brilliant in wraps with green salad.

Ok you are convincing me..... might have to try that!

Dustyblue · 14/11/2025 04:48

I put soy sauce on hot chips but I don't consider that strange at all. 😎

Wiglio · 14/11/2025 04:52

Hmmm interesting! I’ll try that. Love goats cheese.

Try a good bit of crunchy brown toast with some lime pickle (or leftover cold curry 🫣) and a thin slice of goats cheese.

It’s amazing. Try the lime pickle from M&S. I’m addicted to it.

And all lime pickle fans , have you tried roast chicken breast stuffed with mozzarella and lime pickle then right at the end of cooking add enough cous cous to absorb the juice , bloodly lovely with new / jacket spud and salad.

Cold butter on Weetabix. It’s sublime.

I used to put butter and jam on mine. The only other way I could eat them was to crush them up and mix them with Nutella to make knock of ferrero rochers

Jam is just a sweeter chutney, really. Well, that's how i view it. Plus sweet stuff works well with cheese as cheese is salty and fatty. Makes sense to me.
