In France in the summer I was served burrata with strawberries and an aniseed dressing. I was a bit sceptical but it was one of the most delicious things I’ve ever tasted.

Lamb and anchovies
Prunes and smoked bacon (devils)
Rich fruit cake and hard white cheese
Sole or chicken with grapes (Veronique)
Chicken with white wine and cheese (shallots and garlic too)
Smoked haddock and poached eggs

But they are all really accepted pairings. They don't sound weird, because there are loads if recipes for them.

Welshcakes with blue cheese

Waitingfordoggo · 13/11/2025 21:18

I often eat Marmite on toast with a thin layer of salad cream over the top. I just love it. The creaminess of the salad cream is like the opposite to the sharp salty intensity of the Marmite.

Cheese and mango chutney sandwiches or crackers

Cold butter on Weetabix. It’s sublime.

This was a standard breakfast in my house growing up. Except there was also sugar atop the butter! 😋

Salad cream with black pudding.

I like coleslaw 😋

DarkEyedSailor · 13/11/2025 21:21

Peanut butter and tomato on a sandwich.
Fried bread with marmalade.

Objectrelations · 13/11/2025 21:21

White miso and blueberries

Objectrelations · 13/11/2025 21:24

Marmite porridge (made with just oats and water)

I am a fish obsessive thanks to working in a fishmongers as a student but you could not pay me enough to eat fish or meat with fruit.

PauliesWalnuts · 13/11/2025 21:25

It’s not so much a combination but I used to work in a restaurant where one of their best selling desserts was home made brown bread ice cream.

It’s amazing. Try the lime pickle from M&S. I’m addicted to it.

Comethefuckonbridget1 · 13/11/2025 21:29

Carrot and peanut butter

I like that ice cream. But I once saw black garlic ice cream, I gave that one a miss.
I did have beetroot with raspberry ice cream. It was okay, but not my favourite.

I am Irish, that is fairly common in gourmet style ice cream. And tasty 😋

Maybe so, but it still is really common. Gammon and pineapple, mango/lime/pineapple and prawn/tuna/salmon
And flavours like mackerel and rhubarb have been going together forever!

probablyabadidea · 13/11/2025 22:23

Marmite on malt loaf is glorious (with lots of butter too, of course).

Waitingfordoggo · 13/11/2025 22:25

@PauliesWalnuts I am a bit squeamish about the idea of fruit with fish tbh, but apple sauce with pork, and cranberry with turkey are completely standard (and delicious!)

Peakwarrior · 13/11/2025 22:28

Scallops and black pudding

Cinnamon raisin bagel with marmite or cheese (blue a particular favourite)

Marmalade and blue cheese sandwiches

Mayo, mango relish & curry powder, a la Coronation Chicken. I always thought it sounded like a train crash of a dish but the 1st time I tried it I was hooked. Bloody awesome.

It also works well with chickpeas too.

Sausages and choc spread.
Discovered in an American pancake combo, but now a pairing in its own right in our house.

Similarly, sausages and golden syrup.
