Sausage question.

dontmalbeconme · 06/11/2025 16:44

6 people coming round for sausages round the fire pit. Two men with large appetites, 1 man and 3 women with regular appetites. Only sausages, buns and fried onions being served. A range of sausages from toulouse style, chorizo style, cumberland, hotdog, bratwurst etc. Drinking will be involved.

How many sausages should I buy? And how many hot dog buns?

Money isnt an issue, and I have plenty of freezer space.

I'm currently up to 96 sausages and 24 buns (plus 2kg of onions and all the sauces). That's ridiculous, no? I need to join over-caters anonymous!

30?

I do love a leftover, cold sausage so over catering isn't a disaster. Perhaps I would not want 70 cold ones though.

BertieBotts · 06/11/2025 16:57

96 for 6 people?

Yes it sounds a bit ridiculous Grin

ToffeeForEveryone · 06/11/2025 17:00

Assuming there is you +1 at home, that's 12 sausages per person. Are you hosting a competitive eating event?

Also, no other sides at all? Potato salad, tomatoes, gherkins even?

inmyheadimthequeen · 06/11/2025 17:01

I'd say 24 - 30 to be on the safe side. DH - who loves his food - said 15 tops. We both think 'too many types of sausage'.

itsthetea · 06/11/2025 17:03

2 for normals and 3 for the bigs
less sausage- a bag of salad, and a bowl of fruit salad for afters

dontmalbeconme · 06/11/2025 17:13

It's for 6 people total.

The volume is mostly due to wanting a variety of different sausages.

Happy to freeze leftover (uncooked) sausages, less happy to have left over rolls due to bulk.

Only hotdogs, no sides, as it's post firework munchies round the firepit, not a dinner party. Sausages will be cooked on the firepit. People likely to be a bit tipsy and hungry.

I've got 6x6 packs of various flavours of Taste the Difference sausages. 2x8 hotdog sausages in jars, 2x6 packs of bratwurst, and my emergency sausages are 2x8 packs of cumberland supermarket butcher style sausages and 2x8 packs of linconshire butcher style sausages. I'm assuming the emergency sausages will probably end up being frozen.

Its not a fruit salad type of event!

Ask yourself how many sausages/buns you'd eat in a normal sitting. Maybe double it for post beer munchies. Then multiply by 6.

Or figure out how long you're prepared to live on snorkers if you over order.

ginasevern · 06/11/2025 17:59

96 sausages for 6 people. What a sausage fest! I imagine the 2 "hungry" guys would eat 5 each and the 2 regular ones 2 each - maybe 3 if tempted by another flavour. So bun wise I'd get 20 to be on the safe side.

barskits · 06/11/2025 18:04

I like a sausage or several😂

What time do I arrive?

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 06/11/2025 18:06

All uncooked leftovers are freezeable + cooked onions.
I regularly make a batch of caramelised onions & freeze in portions.

BTW, I've only ever had chorizo in slices in small portions, never seen a chunk of a whole one served in a bun (I lived in Spain for a while).

ohyesido · 06/11/2025 18:07

96 for 6?

really?

can I come too?

After drinking, I'd probably have 2 or 3, and likely just one bun. I can imagine DH having 5 or 6, mostly in buns.

So 6 of me would be 12-18 sausages. 6 of DH would be 30-36 sausages.

Hmm, all far less than 96.

If I took the 32 emergency sausages out of the equation, that would leave 64, which is still too much.

Reduce the bratwurst and hot dogs to one pack of each, that gives me 50.

That seems a bit more reasonable.

1 of each style of sausage, plus some extra? Then sides- slaws, potato salad, pasta salad, veggie salad and dips

Sainsbuys TTD chorizo style sausages, not full on chorizo! They're delicious, although my favorite is the toulouse style sausages from the same range.

Well, I think we'll have enough sausages to squeeze you in!

I would eat 2 max, DH probably 3 but we would both want some sides other than bread or onions. I would be happy with coleslaw or potato salad or fries.
I would eat more sausages and less bread by choice, so 3 or 4 sauages and sides one bun.
You definitely need salad

TragicMuse · 06/11/2025 18:21

You can freeze cooked sausages if you have some left over - when you’re ready to eat them it’s just 1.5-2 minutes in the microwave from frozen and bob’s your uncle!

Defintely don't need salad. It's after fireworks firepit snacks eaten round the firepit, not a plated meal.

20

4 x 2 for the big appetites
3 x 4 for the regular appetites

add a small contingency - so 24.

Same number of finger rolls.

dontmalbeconme · 06/11/2025 18:28

Do you think people would want burger cheese and gherkins? Personally I wouldn't have them with hotdogs, but would other people?

See, that sounds so clear and sensible. But my ADHD brain that has been conditioned into anxiously striving to cover all bases for fear of failure is shouting at me "and then double it, just in case..."

Definitely not cheese. That’s a horrible American corn dog thing. Onions and ketchup are sufficient

No!

I would sack off the bratwurst and hotdogs entirely

Omg I love threads like this 😂

96 sausages?? Hmm. I dunno....
