Sausage question.

dontmalbeconme · 06/11/2025 16:44

6 people coming round for sausages round the fire pit. Two men with large appetites, 1 man and 3 women with regular appetites. Only sausages, buns and fried onions being served. A range of sausages from toulouse style, chorizo style, cumberland, hotdog, bratwurst etc. Drinking will be involved.

How many sausages should I buy? And how many hot dog buns?

Money isnt an issue, and I have plenty of freezer space.

I'm currently up to 96 sausages and 24 buns (plus 2kg of onions and all the sauces). That's ridiculous, no? I need to join over-caters anonymous!

6 people
5+ types of sausages assuming 6 per pack minimum is at least 30 sausages so 5 each.
I reckon that’s plenty to be fair.

Rescuedogblues · 06/11/2025 20:46

You could host a mumsnet meet with the amount of sausages! I like sausages 😁

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 06/11/2025 20:48

I bloody love a cold sausage so extra would be no problem for me.

I would probably allow 4 for the smaller appetites and 6 for the men with big appetites based on what my DH eats so that’s 34 sausages, but I would get 45 so you don’t go short and hopefully have some nice sarnies over the next couple of days

Its not a fruit salad type of event!

If someone gave me a fruit salad for afters I’d actually cry.

Sgreenpy · 06/11/2025 20:54

Six packs of sausages- 36 is plenty for six people. 3 bread rolls per person is 18.
Onions, tomato ketchup, mustard. Unlikely to require gerkins or cheese.

I'd also get some parkin and flapjacks for a sweet treat afterwards.
96 sausages is way way too much!!

dontmalbeconme · 06/11/2025 20:57

Right, so it seems the correct amount of sausages is probably around 30 or so.

So how many sausages do I have in my online shop to be delivered tomorrow? Still ninety fucking six.

What's wrong with me? I'm pretty sure normal prople dont feel the need for 32 emergency sausages when they are catering for 6 people...

Oh I LOVE sausages around the campfire!! I'd have 2, possibly 3 if I was tempted by a third type of sausage...chorizo, Cumberland, Lincolnshire...yum! The jarred hot dogs and bratwurst wouldn't get a look in, I'd sack them off entirely! Very large and hungry DH would have 4 at the most... so 2x4 (8) plus 4x3 (12) gives 20, but I'd go 30 or possibly 36 so everyone got what they wanted in terms of choices, and a few tasty leftovers.

Cook what you want! Don't be conned into making salads and desserts if that's not what you want, it's your event, do it your way! And for what it's worth, I would be delighted with a sausage fest Grin. It's one meal, it doesn't have to be fully balanced, as long as your guests know that's all you're offering, you're fine.

coxesorangepippin · 06/11/2025 21:44

Oh god yes to parkin and flapjack

We'll all be there around 6pm 🍷

CMOTDibbler · 06/11/2025 21:57

I love it when I find a member of the 'never knowingly undercatered' club.
I might have bought less sausages (possibly), but would have felt compelled to make a selection of sides plus cake/ dessert as god forbid anyone might feel the least inconvenienced by not having something they fancied. I blame my parents who were very much the same.

ForFunnyOliveEagle · 06/11/2025 22:16

I’d cater for max 3 sausages per person, 96 is crazy! 😂

JudgeBread · 06/11/2025 22:18

That sounds like a perfectly acceptable number of sausages to me. Can I come? 🙃

Emmz1510 · 06/11/2025 22:20

I would go for 4-6 each and even that is being very generous! So 24-36 sausages and probably same amount of buns

Freebus · 06/11/2025 22:23

16 sausages!

Cerialkiller · 06/11/2025 22:28

Personally I'm not a fan of a hotdog style sausage, think they're gross so I would allow for personal taste so make sure that everyone has at least a couple of 'normal' sausages with the fancier ones as a nice option. In fact I would just keep 2 packs aside of a Cumberland or some lovely Bramley apples ones that I'm fond of from sainos so they will please most people. The more exotic ones I would only do one each for example.

Dollyflip · 06/11/2025 22:48

Looks like you’ll be eating sausages for a long time 🤣🤣🤣

Sainsbuys TTD chorizo style sausages, not full on chorizo! They're delicious, although my favorite is the toulouse style sausages from the same range.

Edited

100% with you on the deliciousness of the Sainsbury's chorizo and Toulouse style ones. I'd get some extras of those.

More sausages? Thankfully the deadline for my online order has now passed, so I couldn't add any extras.

I'm making home made apple crumble and custard for pud...

You're going to come back and tell us how much everyone ate, right?

If they're hanging round for a while, I'd definitely go on the over catering side myself I must admit

PistachioTiramisu · 07/11/2025 08:53

Don't forget some decent butter for the buns - not spread!

Usernamenotav · 07/11/2025 10:29

I don't know why this has made me laugh so much.

But I would have gone for a max 4 per person. And would have the same amount of buns as sausages because who eats a lone sausage on its own

ImFineItsAllFine · 07/11/2025 12:43

I think you've made it much harder for yourself by having too many types of sausage OP. I'd try and whittle it down to 3 types - normal/cumberland, bratwurst and 1 other perhaps (chorizo maybe?)

Then get 2 of each type per person plus a few spares.

EDIT: just seen your update that the online deadline has passed. Sorry, this isn't so helpful now!

Defintely don't need salad. It's after fireworks firepit snacks eaten round the firepit, not a plated meal.

Sounds fab !!

LoveItaly · 07/11/2025 14:58

I would get some poorer quality sausages too (like Richmond for example). Not everyone likes really good quality sausages, I find them too meaty so only eat cheap ones (no need to tell me what’s in them, I prefer not to think of that). Obviously you know your guests though!

CoastalCalm · 07/11/2025 15:15

I’d personally not touch a hotdog or bratwurst so I’d scrap those and the rest will suffice with any surplus frozen

dontmalbeconme · 07/11/2025 15:31

One of my friends has just asked if she can bring along an extra couple of guests, so I now feel perfectly justified in my 96 sausages stance... Just goes to prove that one should always ensure they have 30+ emergency sausages to hand.
