Sausage question.

dontmalbeconme · 06/11/2025 16:44

6 people coming round for sausages round the fire pit. Two men with large appetites, 1 man and 3 women with regular appetites. Only sausages, buns and fried onions being served. A range of sausages from toulouse style, chorizo style, cumberland, hotdog, bratwurst etc. Drinking will be involved.

How many sausages should I buy? And how many hot dog buns?

Money isnt an issue, and I have plenty of freezer space.

I'm currently up to 96 sausages and 24 buns (plus 2kg of onions and all the sauces). That's ridiculous, no? I need to join over-caters anonymous!

I’d personally not touch a hotdog or bratwurst so I’d scrap those and the rest will suffice with any surplus frozen

I agree about the hotdogs (although others seem to like them), but the Bratwurst are 90% pork and rather tasty.

You should have run a competition to see who gets closest to the number of sausages consumed.
I'm going to say 50 sausages will be eaten.

coxesorangepippin · 07/11/2025 16:16

Extra guests??

What?? Are they big eaters? Small eaters? Sausage aficionados??

How will you put these newbies into the calculation??

I know, right!

Will my 32 emergency sausages be enough to cover this change in numbers?

Do I need to go out and pick up some emergency emergency sausages just in case my emergency sausages run out?

(On a more serious note I'm genuinely a little concerned that 24 rolls is a bit tight for 8 people)

Have you considered the other issues - quantities of onion and tomato ketchup ?

I've got new bottles of ketchup, French's mustard, brown sauce, mayo and BBQ sauce being delivered. Sriacha, relish and burger sauce also available. I've ordered 2kg of onions, plus I've got a kilo or so in the cupboard.

I'm also making a couple of huge apple crumbles for pud.

But only 3 hotdog buns per person feels a bit tight.

One of my key cooking rules is “always cook all the sausages”. I thought it was a perfect rule, always true. Until this thread 🤣.

Streetcornerchoir · 07/11/2025 18:11

I think more buns/emergency bread too, and an extra chair as I’m also inviting myself, you sound so fun 😅

dontmalbeconme · 07/11/2025 21:03

This is what 96 sausages looks like, btw. Its not actually that much!

I don't know why this has made me laugh so much.

But I would have gone for a max 4 per person. And would have the same amount of buns as sausages because who eats a lone sausage on its own

Me! I'd eat a sausage without a bun 😂

Me too! It’s like the healthy option after you’ve had a couple of hotdogs. :-D

2 for normals and 3 for the bigs
less sausage- a bag of salad, and a bowl of fruit salad for afters

Who wants to sit around eating fruit salad in November?! You'll be suggesting choc ices next!

Have you copied your OP from a GCSE maths paper?

I went to a firework house party once which was very sausage based.
They too ordered a large variety of different and posh sausages and the 24 of the ones they'd ordered... I think it was ttd cumberland, were subbed for sainsburys savers standard pork sausages.
My friend was so stressed about it. Called me on the way to hers to see if they had any at my sainsburys ( they didn't, everyone loves a sausage on firework night)
She too had millions of sausages. High end, unusual, standard, spicy. You name it.
Guess which ones went first
The sainsburys savers!

All uncooked leftovers are freezeable + cooked onions.
I regularly make a batch of caramelised onions & freeze in portions.

BTW, I've only ever had chorizo in slices in small portions, never seen a chunk of a whole one served in a bun (I lived in Spain for a while).

Chorizo inspired sausages are fab - more of an homage to chorizo than the real thing.

pinkpony88 · 07/11/2025 23:18

I’m sure I once had a maths question like this in a school test 😂

I didn’t see your message but commented similar 😂

I am the worst over caterer and have a horror of there not being enough, and even I think 96 is sufficient and you can always freeze what is left (you can. My freezer is always completely rammed so I probably couldn’t). I’m a bit worried about you cooking them tipsy on a fire though (and I am also really relaxed about food poisoning and use by dates and so forth). Might you put them in the oven for a bit to make sure nobody eats raw sausage?

FancyCatSlave · 07/11/2025 23:25

I’d allow for 6 per person plus a spare pack. But 24 rolls is not enough.

I like to double sausage in my rolls, what if you have people like me?!

Helplessandheartbroke · 07/11/2025 23:26

ginasevern · 06/11/2025 17:59

96 sausages for 6 people. What a sausage fest! I imagine the 2 "hungry" guys would eat 5 each and the 2 regular ones 2 each - maybe 3 if tempted by another flavour. So bun wise I'd get 20 to be on the safe side.

Sausage fest! 😂

i have a healthy appetite but cannot imagine eating 6 sausages and 5 rolls (you say 4 rolls each not enough?!) Each to their own.

On which note…. I’d serve a mug of soup alongside the sausages to break it up a bit. Heinz tomato soup would be my choice, or homemade vegetable. Not a lot of prep or effort from you but would go well.

DiscoBob · 08/11/2025 09:38

If you've got six types then one of each would be reasonable? Then another six random ones extra for the big eaters between them.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 08/11/2025 14:49

I’d get some of the par baked baguettes. Sausages in warm, crusty baguettes are so much better than hot dog rolls. Plus they are longer so you can go 2 sausages to a baguette.

plumclafoutis · 09/11/2025 22:37

I’d want the gherkins with my sausage.
