If your roast dinner meat is a gammon joint, what gravy do you have?

I have guests for dinner on Saturday who have requested a roast gammon roast dinner. This isn’t something I would usually make, we’re more of a beef or pork roast family. They’re not.

I am happy to cater for their preference but what do I make gravy out of? IME I’ll just end up with a salty stock (likely will do it in the slow cooker). Or do I just use something like Bisto Best.. and if so which one?’

Plum sauce. Or white/onion sauce (its not cheesy).

Or become menopausal then tell them to shove their poncy demands and faddy eating habits up their arse and they can get what they're given or don't bother visiting.

Then you really should try it! One of the most common sauces served with gammon!

OP i was coming on to say ask your friends, but see you’ve decided to do that. If they are that fussy and you serve the ‘wrong’ gravy it will ruin their meal. Was also going to suggest adding cider to the gravy but would check that out with them too

Yes, but what sort of gravy though? You wouldn't normally use the cooking juices as they would be far too salty (ask me how I know) and Bisto with gammon seems a rather odd combination.

I serve with a mustard sauce of my own invention!

I cook the gammon in 50/50 cider and water and then glaze it and finish in the oven. While it is resting I make a roux and use it to thicken half a litre of the cooking liquid, and then add some cream and a big dollop of wholegrain mustard. It is salty but not unpleasantly so.

This sounds fabulous, and I'm definitely going to give it a go one day!

In answer to the OP, generally gammon is a secondary meat for us, so it's served with gravy made with the juices from the primary meat. So, sorry,I'm not much help. But, if it does help, it tastes perfectly fine with beef or chicken/turkey gravy, so whatever you choose will probably be fine. I'd probably use instant gravy or mostly stock cube stock and only a tiny bit of the cooking liquid due to the saltiness.

I don't like gravy with gammon
But if they want gravy I would just use a bisto chicken or pork bistro granules and also do a white sauce, mustard sauce or parsley sauce and serve them both.

I use red Bisto for everything, adding meat juices and all the veg water. You can use the slow cooker liquid with the gravy granules

Cider gravy (I use the veg water and pork or chicken stock with the cider, as I find the gammon juices too salty even after soaking but I’ll leave that to you to decide)

Go to m and s and buy some ready made gravy, they have many varieties. Chicken / beef / lamb / onion etc. Made from granules on own would be a bit thin I think but gammon cooking juices aren’t suitable to make a gravy.

Fussy eaters I’d just use basic red bisto and maybe use veg water. You’re right in that gammon juices will be too salty and the cider option may not be appreciated by fussies. As a pp I’m also aghast at the suggestion of no gravy. The other sauces eg cauli cheese and parsley AS WELL, but not instead of gravy! What about the potatoes and veg! 😱

No gravy as such! Plenty of freshly made parsley sauce - lots of parsley! - and mashed potato. Always goes down very well.
