If your roast dinner meat is a gammon joint, what gravy do you have?

I have guests for dinner on Saturday who have requested a roast gammon roast dinner. This isn’t something I would usually make, we’re more of a beef or pork roast family. They’re not.

I am happy to cater for their preference but what do I make gravy out of? IME I’ll just end up with a salty stock (likely will do it in the slow cooker). Or do I just use something like Bisto Best.. and if so which one?’

HELP!!

I use red Bisto for everything, adding meat juices and all the veg water. You can use the slow cooker liquid with the gravy granules

I don’t bother with gravy because in my opinion it doesn’t,work. I always do a cauliflower cheese with it to provide a sauce.

Radiatorvalves · 01/05/2025 21:09

Parsley sauce with gammon. Not gravy.

I’d have gravy too, not instead, including on the cauli cheese

Parsley Sauce or Onion Sauce. The cooking juices will be very salty.

TheLadyIsAVamp · 01/05/2025 21:10

I don't tend to do gravy with gammon, I'll usually opt for parsley sauce or just have some good mustard available. I think you can make a gravy using the gravy and a roux but I just think it'd be too salty. How about doing cauliflower cheese or creamy cabbage and leeks for a saucy component?

CharlotteCChapel · 01/05/2025 21:10

I use a thickened cider sauce that is made with the stock left over from cooking it.

nahthatsnotforme · 01/05/2025 21:11

I would agree with anything but gravy.. and I second cauli cheese but I’ve been asked for ‘just a normal roast but roast gammon please ‘

I do cauliflower cheese or a veg gratin with gammon.

pastabest · 01/05/2025 21:11

I wouldn't do gravy with gammon, I'd have it with a cheesy side like cauliflower cheese, cheesy leeks or dauphiose potatoes.

spicemaiden · 01/05/2025 21:11

Cheese sauce

Parsley sauce with gammon. Not gravy.

Edited

Yes, this is what I serve also.

ninjahamster · 01/05/2025 21:13

Parsley sauce here.

PoorPhaedra · 01/05/2025 21:13

We do a jug of homemade cheese sauce to pour over the gammon. No gravy.

nahthatsnotforme · 01/05/2025 21:13

I agree with all of you😃. But these are fussy eating friends who I love dearly and know any sort of cheese sauce won’t cut it. Maybe I’ll just message them and ask

I usually cook the gammon in liquid first before roasting.
My favourite gravy is cooking the gammon with cider then using some of that liquid to soak out any juices from the roasting dish and adding a bit of seed mustard 😋

WhitbyWoo · 01/05/2025 21:14

I always want gravy with a roast. I’d probably use veg stock and half chicken gravy, gammon juices would be too salty.

Im appalled and astounded to see people saying no gravy!!! What about the roasties?

nahthatsnotforme · 01/05/2025 21:14

I love the cider idea…

I would ask them what they prefer. I would agree that gravy doesn't go really.

Floranan · 01/05/2025 21:15

I would make a cauliflower cheese or parsley sauce if it was for me. But for visitors I would do cauliflower cheese and make a bisto gravy with the veg water and serve separately then people can add if the want it.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 01/05/2025 21:17

Parsley sauce, or serve with cauliflower cheese, or maybe leeks in cheese sauce.

Since your guests have requested gammon though, maybe ask them what they would like?

j741 · 01/05/2025 21:18

Cloves in gammon, honey on top, water or cider in tray. If you get the timings right the gravy you are left with at the end is to die for!

Littletreefrog · 01/05/2025 21:19

If so cheese sauce for the normal people and gravy for those who have requested it.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 01/05/2025 21:20

Bisto onion gravy- goes with everything!! 😋

EndlesslyDecluttering · 01/05/2025 21:20

We just make some Bisto Best (chicken because that’s what we have in) for anyone that wants it and plenty of mustard. Cheesy/creamy things do not go with any roast IMO.
