What sides would you serve with a shepherds pie?
the mince itself I tend to put carrot, onion, peas and sometimes mushrooms in.

best sides?

I always have cabbage. Don't know why. No other veg seems quite right. I also have carrots and peas in the mince and if I can be bothered, fried leeks in the mash😋. And extra gravy on the side!

Wigglypasta · 20/09/2024 19:08

Baked beans

Crymeastream564 · 20/09/2024 19:10

Leafy greens like long stemmed broccoli or kale

@ThirstyThursday - mashed cauliflower or mashed celeriac is really lovely as a low carb topping for a Shepard’s pie. Blended with some cream and lots of black pepper. Yum.

@Peridot1

yes, I eat lot of cauli & celeriac! Mashed roasted etc etc

I also don't eat meat, so my Shepard's pie is now a veg producers 'pie' 🤣🤣

Marmite27 · 20/09/2024 19:19

Cauliflower, broccoli and carrots, occasionally cabbage or sprouts. But the only veg I put in my base is onions

MingingTiles · 20/09/2024 19:20

I put carrots and onions in the pie then two green veg on the side.

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/09/2024 19:22

Only veg. It's a complete meal.

WeregoingtoIbiza · 20/09/2024 19:26

Crusty bread and red cabbage 😋

Now I want shepherd pie for tea 😂

3peassuit · 20/09/2024 19:29

Broccoli, peas and broad beans.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 20/09/2024 19:39

Euhhh. “Spring greens”. I wasn’t even aware these were a thing. We used to have “greens” for our old-school 70s school dinners. I hated them. Have never met them since! I thought they were some bizarre mash-up random vegetable concoction. Feeling sick thinking of them now! I hated school dinners. And they made you eat it all up. 🤢

Tigerbreadbum · 20/09/2024 19:40

I know this is controversial but we have it with beans and gravy. And buttered bread to mop up the sauce

BustingBaoBun · 20/09/2024 19:47

Only one choice. Cauliflower cheese. My fave comfort food with shepherds pie

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 20/09/2024 19:54

Gravy and mint sauce OR HP sauce, possibly green veg such as peas, broccoli or green beans.

Psychoticbreak · 20/09/2024 19:58

Brocoli in this house but I remember going to a friends years ago and got shepards pie and chips. In Ireland. It was weird.

crumblingschools · 20/09/2024 20:00

We put leeks in the mash

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 20/09/2024 20:02

Cabbage and mint sauvce plus extra gravy

That sounds amazing. I usually go for broccoli, but I adore cauliflower cheese and adore shepherd's pie, so together that will be a dream.

coxesorangepippin · 20/09/2024 20:13

Chips? Sliced baguette? Garlic bread? Roast potatoes?

All four?

CrossUniStudent · 20/09/2024 20:27

I don't put veg in mine so we have veg on the side. My mum used to do veg and roasties! There's something lush about a total carb overload.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/09/2024 20:36

Peas, obviously. Unless you're one of those who puts peas in the mince...

JBJ · 20/09/2024 20:42

I do broccoli and sweetcorn on the side, then carrots, peas and onions in the actual pie.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 20/09/2024 20:43

Pickled beetroot!

NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle · 20/09/2024 20:46

Vegetables or baked beans.. Always extra thick gravy poured on top.

I had it dished up to me at a friend's house with Branston pickle on the side once, it was surprisingly nice.

Maloneyb · 20/09/2024 14:24

Wow never heard of branston pickle with sheps pie!!

I insist on HP Sauce with mine. It's awesome

Maloneyb · 20/09/2024 21:05

Thank you all! Didn’t expect to get soo many responses!

I’ve decided to do yorkies, red cabbage, green beans, asparagus and we’re trying the branston pickle for sure!!
