What sides would you serve with a shepherds pie?
the mince itself I tend to put carrot, onion, peas and sometimes mushrooms in.

best sides?

I always serve it with cabbage

Surely it's a meal in itself... Or am I just lazy

@Ygfrhj

yep. Same here.

sides - nope

fortheveryfirsttime · 20/09/2024 16:17

Peas and carrots here but we don't put them in the shepherds/cottage pie. I tend to just use onion and mushrooms.

Broccoli
Cabbage
Peas
Courgette

I'd enjoy the Brocolli with it, it's got peas in it, for me cabbage & courgette aren't the right texture 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cheesy baked beans, ketchup and Yorkshire puddings

That sounds divine.

Peas, Yorkshire puds and extra gravy.

Yorkshire puds wouldn't have occurred to me, but sounds YUM.

I eat low carb now (to control my diabetes without medication) so I can't eat either, let alone both together, but it sounds good.

fridaynight1 · 20/09/2024 16:26

I'm a bit boring and always do peas, mint sauce and gravy with lamb. Maybe throw in some asparagus if I'm feeling adventurous. Baby carrots are nice too.
Only ever served on the side, I don't throw it all in together. Just onions and potatoes in the actual pie.

poetryandwine · 20/09/2024 16:26

Like @kitsuneghost my first choice is a green salad, second choice is cabbage. My British family definitely reverses the order

isthereaway · 20/09/2024 16:28

Any green leafy veg: green beans, cabbage/sprouts or broccoli/kale.

I’m sorry, what would you say?

Just what do you serve with it. "sides" makes it sound like you live in a diner

ApolloandDaphne · 20/09/2024 16:34

Carrots and peas or carrots and broccoli. Cabbage would also be good.

rainsofcastamere · 20/09/2024 17:30

We don't do sides. We just do a massive pasta bowl of it each, shit loads of cheese on top and a gallon of mint sauce. With a spoon.

Peridot1 · 20/09/2024 17:31

@ThirstyThursday - mashed cauliflower or mashed celeriac is really lovely as a low carb topping for a Shepard’s pie. Blended with some cream and lots of black pepper. Yum.

HighlandCowbag · 20/09/2024 17:32

Baked beans. And brown sauce. Tis the food of God's.

That's the alternative to green veg for winter comfort food.

hardtocare · 20/09/2024 17:49

I usually serve with some green veg on the side just to make sure we're getting out 5 a day but not ever sure steamed veg really counts as a side

There's plenty of fancy restaurants which will happily charge you extra for some!

Deliiciousllydifffident · 20/09/2024 17:59

It has to be peas in our house.

floppybit · 20/09/2024 18:00

Always pickled red cabbage on the side

RabbitsRock · 20/09/2024 18:03

I put baked beans in cottage pie but don’t think they go with shepherds pie. I serve just peas with shepherds pie.

PickAChew · 20/09/2024 18:04

Lots of greens and I often add green lentils to the pie as I find that it cuts the greasiness of the lamb mince.

I’m with the Bad kitty.

Most people I know have peas with it but I like a good pile of slightly crunchy cabbage, sautéed in a knob of butter and a liberal twist of cracked black pepper. Yum. ( Though farty …)

Georgyporky · 20/09/2024 18:23

Something green.

My DM used to do roasties !!

To be fair, they were actually better than the lumpy topping.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/09/2024 18:28

Broccoli or cauliflower and baby carrots - but I don't put veg in the mince
