Vegetarian alternative to bacon butties

OMGitsnotgood · 06/08/2024 15:02

I usually make portobello mushrooms with cheese (my vegetarian friends all eat all cheeses), and maybe cooked sliced tomatoes.
Some eat eggs so that is an option but some don't.
Ideas please!

Is veggie bacon an option? The This isn’t Bacon rashers are absolutely amazing - made from pea protein

OMGitsnotgood · 06/08/2024 15:12

Oh I didn't know that was a thing, thank you! Possibly an option, I know some vegetarians don't like fake meats but I can check, it doesn't need to be a surprise. I guess vegetarian sausages are an option too.

I thought the This Isn't bacon was ok, but then I tried La Vie plant-based bacon and my meat eating family swear by it as much as I do. So if it were me, that would be my alternative! I get them from Sainsbury's and I think Waitrose might do them, too.

As for veggie sausages, I've tried lots and my favourite are the Richmond meat free ones (I prefer the caramelised onion ones, but the standard ones are very accurate to a plain pork sausage, if a little heavy on the black pepper in my opinion).

Gelasring · 06/08/2024 15:15

I'd go veggies sausages rather than bacon. I think they're generally a lot nicer.

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 06/08/2024 15:17

Deep fried halloumi sandwiches.

Make sandwiches with thin slices of halloumi.
Soak them in beaten egg.
Heat 2cm depth oil in a pan and fry the egg-soaked sandwiches.

Can also be done with mozzarella and pesto but I think halloumi is more bacony.

When I was a veggie my bacon sarnie substitute was smoked tofu (smoked is important for flavour and texture) sliced thinly and fried with a splash of soy sauce. It gets crispy and smoky/umami - really good and healthy substitute ( more so than highly processed fake bacon). Dollop of ketchup, it's amazing, still eat it now sometimes even though I'm a lapsed veggie.

Richmonds meat free sausages are fabulous.

This sounds absolutely gorgeous - will have to try. There is nothing wrong with ‘fake meat’ from time to time though.

Agree.

We eat these in preference to meat sausages in our house now.

Lovely with brown sauce and caramelised onions in a bap :-)

mydogisthebest · 06/08/2024 15:30

Richmond veggie bacon is really good. Me and DH have tried just about all the different ones and these are by far the best we think. We like them well cooked so they go crispy.

We used to eat Richmond veggie sausages but have recently changed to Morrisons Plant Revolution herby sausages which are really good

Blackcats7 · 06/08/2024 15:43

Richmond veggie bacon is the best, as are their veggie sausages

LegoHouse274 · 06/08/2024 15:50

I agree with the suggestions for various veggie facons and Richmond sausages, or eggs, but I was coming to suggest halloumi and someone else already has. Fried or grilled halloumi is so good in a butty.

I also like the 'it's not bacon' rashers. I've had others which were also 'ok' but I think these are the best.

i like Cauldron veggie sausages (the Lincolnshire more than the Cumbrian) they're a good texture, (I find the Heck style a bit meh) but also don't like Linda McCartney type ones as they have this 'are they actually vegetarian feel to them (for me anyway)

I like Halloumi & Tofu too!

SafariShoes · 06/08/2024 17:51

Brown sauce glazed mushrooms

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 06/08/2024 17:53

It's the salt and fat that people like in bacon sandwiches, so think along those lines. Halloumi ticks the boxes.

Comedycook · 06/08/2024 17:55

Egg, cheese slice and hash brown in a roll

MadamePeriwinkle · 06/08/2024 17:56

Another vote for Richmond meat free bacon and sausages. I’m a meat eater and regularly buy the veggie sausage by choice, the bacon I probably wouldn’t choose but I’ll happily eat it as an option if I’m cooking for vegetarian friends.

Allthislovelygreen · 06/08/2024 18:12

Definitely veggie bacon. I think the Richmond is the best.

All the vegans I've known prefer fake meat to the 'healthy' option

Goldrill · 06/08/2024 18:14

Fried potatoes. Lots of butter and salt and ketchup. Nom.

Nannyfannybanny · 06/08/2024 18:20

Anything other than bacon surely.i don't eat meat, I don't eat fake meat. Whenever I used to request a veggie breakfast,it contained veggie sausages, which have the taste, texture of meat, horrible
I would rather have a good cheese, with onion marmalade or ploughman's sandwich
. mushroom sandwich sounds revolting

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 06/08/2024 18:21

Quorn ham slices fried taste like bacon, are much cheaper and easier to use.

AlisonDonut · 06/08/2024 18:22

I've eaten fried halloumi sandwiches with ketchup since the 80s, as a veggie bacon alternative.

Redhairandhottubs · 06/08/2024 18:25

I would ask them what they like. Personally, I hate veggie sausages and bacon, but your mushroom option sounds great! My favourite is grilled portobello mushrooms and cherry tomatoes with some grated cheese in a wrap.

OMGitsnotgood · 06/08/2024 18:26

We all love them, even the meat eaters !
