Vegetarian alternative to bacon butties

I usually make portobello mushrooms with cheese (my vegetarian friends all eat all cheeses), and maybe cooked sliced tomatoes.
Some eat eggs so that is an option but some don't.
Ideas please!

The Hairy Bikers had a really lovely recipe when they were being Hairy Dieters. It was for a tofu BLT. Marinate the tofu in chipotle, maple syrup, soy sauce and mustard then fry it. Have it in a toasted bun with crispy lettuce, a big slice of tomato and red onion. I add vegan mayonnaise too.

Halloumi is fantastic. Just make sure there's enough for the meat eaters too because bacon and halloumi is a match made in heaven!

When I was a veggie my bacon sarnie substitute was smoked tofu (smoked is important for flavour and texture) sliced thinly and fried with a splash of soy sauce. It gets crispy and smoky/umami - really good and healthy substitute ( more so than highly processed fake bacon). Dollop of ketchup, it's amazing, still eat it now sometimes even though I'm a lapsed veggie.

I was going to suggest smoked tofu too. A better replacement for bacon substitute, although tofu is of course very processed its no where near as processed as pretendy meat.

I couldn't have anything hot in my sandwich turning the butter liquid
. Good bread, Cornish butter, and a veggie filling 👍. I do like mushrooms, veggie breakfast or in an omelette.

Have been a vegetarian since before many Mumsnetters were born. This is obviously a matter of personal taste, but I can't say how much I dislike the rescent 'inventions' of fake meats of all kinds. Also, Quorn gives me stomach upsets and I don't like it anyway. The fakes are - if you are worried about it - mostly very UPF.

I've never had a mushroom sandwich, but would be prepared to give it a go, especially if the mushrooms were cooked with garlic, black pepper and parsley - and cooked in olive oil, not butter. Maybe with some raw baby spinach between the slices of bread?

My favourite hot sandwich would be a really fresh herb omelette cooked in olive oil between thin slices of brown seeded bread. Perhaps served with watercress in between the slices, as well?

I agree that fried halloumi can be very, very good. I once had it with an olive oil and lemon harissa dressing, served with fresh wholemeal bread to scoop up the melted bits. Delicious.

Do they eat fish? If so, fish finger butties are nice.

Redflagsabounded · 06/08/2024 22:11

Is that a joke?

Nannyfannybanny · 07/08/2024 07:38

nameXname, I think I went veggie about 50 years ago. After seeing hidden camera documentary about how animals were slaughtered and battery hens. I was also nursing at the time.... someone who has fallen under a combine harvester,or off a motor bike, the end result looks and smells exactly like a raw joint. The shops now seem to be full of vegan fake meat products, veggie or vegan by name eh! Colleagues used to tell me how unhealthy it was, I haven't had a cough cold for over 20 years, probably a lot longer. My bloods have always been good. I still don't like hot stuff in a sandwich. Er what say do vegetarians eat fish🤣🤣. Waiting for someone to say they don't have time to cook from scratch, hence the facon, I had 4 kids and worked ft nights.

Halloumi and HP sauce used to be my go to as a vegetarian for bacon sandwiches!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 07/08/2024 07:47

As a very long term veggie, the egg halloumi sandwiches upthread sound amazing! Preferable to fake meat.

OlympicsFanGirl · 07/08/2024 08:00

My veggie husband would prefer a veggie sausage or fried egg

Koko83 · 07/08/2024 08:13

My brother makes ‘facon’ which is basically banana skin cooked in a certain way that tastes like bacon. I was surprised! Also very resourceful!

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 07/08/2024 08:16

Halloumi all the way. I’m wary of fake meat because it tends to be ultra processed, though I do like the occasional veggie sausage.

BananaLambo · 07/08/2024 08:20

Veggie fingers make a good fish finger substitute sandwich. I’m not a fan of fake meats so I’d have a fried egg and strong cheese with a little bit of chilli jam sandwich instead of bacon.

Fish are not vegetables!

I thought people knew this.

KnickerlessParsons · 07/08/2024 08:44

Just asking! Some do.

caringcarer · 07/08/2024 08:50

My DH eats what I call facon. It's fake bacon. It smells like real bacon when it's cooking so much so my teen has smelled it cooking and come rushing downstairs thinking it was bacon. He has eaten it too and enjoyed it. It's quite expensive though.

eggandonion · 07/08/2024 08:57

Im also an ancient vegetarian and can't cope with the taste and texture of fake meat.
I would like a toasted cheese sandwich with oniony pickles. Or later in the day a chip butty.

Areolaborealis · 07/08/2024 08:59

Another vote for the Richmond meat free sausages!

Their bacon could do with a bit of work on texture but you can improve this by overcooking until crispy. Lovely with toasted bread and crispy lettuce which also helps disguise the texture.

Saschka · 07/08/2024 09:02

Grilled or fried Halloumi. Preferably with avocado but mayo would also work.

Intrigued...

Newgirls · 07/08/2024 09:07

Veggie sausages are so good just make them nice and crispy on the outside

if you don’t like ultra processed foods you really don’t want to think about how they make cheap bacon

MouseofCommons · 07/08/2024 09:07

Quron bacon for a veggie BLT here. It's gluten free too.

DiscoBeat · 07/08/2024 09:11

Our local butcher does the most amazing vegetarian sausages.

Cherandcheralike · 07/08/2024 09:17

I do halloumi with rocket or spinach and chilli jam. Preferably on a freshly baked softish ciabatta type roll.
