Eat kimchi, die alone.

I have tried to eat some kimchi (vadasz raw kimchi) over the last couple of days , about 3 of tablespoons each day. Seriously, I am disgusted by my own stench. Horrendous farts. Trying to eat for gut health. But honestly, it's like there's something dead trying to escape from my gut a few hours after eating it. Should I persevere? Anyone else have this problem ? Also bad after broccoli, sprouts, kale, cabbage etc. I sleep in the spare room after a Sunday roast !!!!

join a brass band so they drown you out?

nah i'd knock it on the head, honestly, you clearly are having trouble digesting and it won't improve. do yakult or something instead

Gingernaut · 23/01/2024 23:49

This reminds me of PJ O'Rourke in Holidays In Hell

I was overwhelmed by the amazing stink of kimchi, the garlic and hot pepper sauerkraut that’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Korea. Its odour rises — eyeglass fogging kimchi breath, throat searing kimchi burps and terrible pants-splitting kimchi farts

Yep. Sounds like me. I was in the supermarket earlier looking at some lipstick. I did a silent but deadly one, and honestly I emerged from the fog, leaving a grim reek behind. I moved off, surreptitiously, hoping nobody would blame me.

It’s not that you’re having trouble digesting it, it’s a fermented product that carries on fermenting in your stomach.

Delicious as it is, I find sometimes the after effects are horrendous and sometimes it’s fine!

DewinDwl · 24/01/2024 07:35

Whaaat

No, never had that problem. Sorry OP!

GrumpyPanda · 24/01/2024 07:40

Never had that with kimchi. Salsify on the other hand...

SteamingTangerine · 24/01/2024 07:40

No I eat that brand of kimchi often and have never experienced that. Now celeriac on the other hand, you'd better stand clear 💨

Brefugee · 24/01/2024 07:42

it is fermented cabbage with a lot of garlic (and if non-vegan also shellfish) - of course it seeps out through your pores and other ends.

I love the smell in Korea - although working in close contact with 30 Koreans who all eat Kimchi 3 times a day did start getting used to.

Theunamedcat · 24/01/2024 07:43

Eat lentils theyvare good for you! No not for me apparently I need to "persevere" and my stomach will "get used to it" in the meantime who looks after my kids? I'm in agony and the GAS even the cats wouldn't come near me

Sauerkrautsandwich · 24/01/2024 07:43

It's because the bacteria in your intestines is not yet grown to deal with it. I would try bit longer. I don't play arse music after any usual suspects nowadays.

littleblackcat27 · 24/01/2024 07:43

Why not cut the amount right down? ie 1/2 a tablespoon mixed in with salad.

I tried the little yogurt drink things for my 'gut health' and the effects were off the scale Grin ended up chucking them away.

MeemawTucker · 24/01/2024 07:44

there's something dead trying to escape from my gut

I think there actually is! Part of the point of eating kimchi is that it kills off bad bits in your gut microbiome and replaces them with good bits. I’m sure there is a more scientific way to describe it but you trump out the decomposed bacteria and so on…

I love it (and eat that brand) but yes it does have an impact….

CopperLion · 24/01/2024 07:44

I’ve had this too! I live by myself and thank Christ for that as the stench would have been enough to make anyone else leave immediately. It is specific to kimchi and sauerkraut for me - I otherwise eat plenty of cruciferous veg, kale, etc. with no issues and believe I am otherwise quite fragrant. It was so alarming that I stopped eating it. How can something that’s meant to do me so much good make me small so bad?? 😂

AllFunAndGamesUntilYoureRunningForTheLastTrain · 24/01/2024 07:45

Kefir.

Increases good gut bacteria, doesn’t cause you to release noxious gases.

Brefugee · 24/01/2024 07:46

perhaps a yakult and one spoonful of kimchi for a while, while you get used to digesting it, then up the kimchi and reduce the yakult gradually?

would it help if you ate it as soup or pancakes? or does that cut down the gut friendly bacteria?

MorningSunshineSparkles · 24/01/2024 08:05

🤢 why would you continue to eat it? There are amazing products that can help with gut health that don’t resort to you eating fecking kimchi.

Edited - they’re called probiotics. Google them and free yourself of foul gas.

MrsRachelDanvers · 24/01/2024 08:17

Try cultured collective apple and fennel sauerkraut instead-wonderful and no noxious gases!

pickledandpuzzled · 24/01/2024 08:21

Swap to sauerkraut.

And start smaller. A teaspoon, then build up.

greenacrylicpaint · 24/01/2024 08:24

blame the dog Grin

but honestly, it takes time for your gut to get used to more fibre and 'good' bacteria.

maybe try to up your fibre first before adding fermented foods.

shearwater2 · 24/01/2024 08:30

I can only have small amounts of fermented foods or pickles. 3 tablespoons a day is a lot. I would only have a tablespoon as a portion, and with other food. I quite enjoy the Baxter's ones. Also while it is good to have as part of a balanced diet, you don't need to take a dose like medicine. I think of it like a condiment.

queenofthewild · 24/01/2024 08:50

I once had proper kimchi. The stuff made by hand and buried in the ground in a clay pot and then dug up at some point when it was fully rancid.

It's the most horrific thing I've ever eaten. I won't touch the stuff in any form now.

cheezncrackers · 24/01/2024 08:53

I think maybe you should switch to kefir for your fermented foods OP - much kinder on your gut and also kinder to those around you!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2024 09:03

I've been having kefir recently - just a bit of the plain one when I'm having fruit and Greek yoigurt - seems ok. I've just bought some kimchi (a beetroot one) and had a bit last night - more like three dessertspoonfuls, it's a bit salty to eat loads of at a time imo. So far ok. But I've been increasing the amount of veg and especially beans and pulses I've been eating over the last month ... there's been a few windy nights and I needed to increase the amount of fluid with them but I think I've adjusted now.

Also bad after broccoli, sprouts, kale, cabbage etc. I sleep in the spare room after a Sunday roast !!!!

If that's literal ... maybe you need to eat a bit of those veg throughout the week rather than loads one day a week?

FizzingAda · 24/01/2024 09:04

Yikes! I recently bought a small jar of kimchi to try for the first time, this is putting me off!
