Eat kimchi, die alone.

I have tried to eat some kimchi (vadasz raw kimchi) over the last couple of days , about 3 of tablespoons each day. Seriously, I am disgusted by my own stench. Horrendous farts. Trying to eat for gut health. But honestly, it's like there's something dead trying to escape from my gut a few hours after eating it. Should I persevere? Anyone else have this problem ? Also bad after broccoli, sprouts, kale, cabbage etc. I sleep in the spare room after a Sunday roast !!!!

I eat that brand - maybe 3 tablespoons a day is too much for you

I have one spoon, whether that's enough and what good it all does I have no idea but I do like the taste and texture!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2024 09:17

Eat it like a pickle not like a pile of coleslaw. Though that would agree with many people's digestion either!

shearwater2 · 24/01/2024 09:18

I would like to see anyone's gut bacteria deal with three tablespoons of kimchi. I don't have any issues with my gut as long as I don't eat too much white bread but that much kimchi would cause havoc.

uhOhOP · 24/01/2024 09:24

I love the Vadasz kimchi!

I'm fine with a lot of kimchi.
Been eating it for about 30 years tho...

Clarabellawilliamson · 24/01/2024 10:12

I absolutely love kimchi, it tastes amazing. We made our own in the summer and it was like a living thing.

I did make the mistake of having a kimchi toastie washed down with kombucha in a posh cafe the other week though- blast off!

blame the dog Grin

but honestly, it takes time for your gut to get used to more fibre and 'good' bacteria.

maybe try to up your fibre first before adding fermented foods.

Firstly I have a really healthy diet , lots of fruit and veg and don't eat much processed stuff .

Typo, don't know where "firstly" came from !

Fry the kimchi. Yes it will lose some of the good bacteria but way easier to eat ....

Eat lentils theyvare good for you! No not for me apparently I need to "persevere" and my stomach will "get used to it" in the meantime who looks after my kids? I'm in agony and the GAS even the cats wouldn't come near me

I find lentils difficult too actually.

I used to fry it when I lived in Korea, my stomach couldn't handle it raw. All the restaurants had those frying grill things. A lot of dishes have it cooked too kimchi Jigae etc.

Brefugee · 24/01/2024 13:29

have just asked DH to make Kimchi Jigae for dinner. Am v. excited now

greasypolemonkeyman · 24/01/2024 13:36

I make my own kimchi and sauerkraut, I bloody love the stuff. It saves a fortune as the Confucian stuff is very expensive. I also ferment garlic in raw honey and love fermented carrots in ginger.

If you persevere you will find that it does settle down. But yes, it can be very smelly to start. My DH had to leave the bedroom one night and sleep on the couch and the dogs started sleeping on the floor instead of under the quilt 😬

I ferment my own sauerkraut and kimchi in 500ml kilner jars. I eat 1/3 of that jar a day with a bowl of noodles and fresh sliced veg. That's more than 3 tablespoons. And I do that 3-4 times a week. I also mages my own sourdough and yogurt .

I've got to say, my skin has improved loads since starting this in November.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 24/01/2024 13:46

Kimchi and fermented foods in general aren't for everyone. I have food intolerances and a hiatus hernia. Both reared their ugly heads in my 40s. I was trying so hard to be healthy, but my body just doesn't like it.

Someone told me about peppermint oil for my acid reflux. Nope, my body didn't like that either.

Grin

3 tablespoons a day as a starter portion Grin you're either brave or foolish.

Starter portion is one tablespoon stirred into your egg fried rice or whatever about twice a week.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 24/01/2024 19:49

There's a good sauerkraut thread going at the moment

I am just laughing at this thread. I had a similar experience with Oatibix - I thought I was going to die in a stinking methane explosion.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/01/2024 19:57

I just looked up the kimchi the OP ate (because I am a slow learner and I'm now curious to try it).

The first thing that came up is a warning that gas may build up I side the tub, so you should always open it over a bowl in case it blows!

Plump82 · 24/01/2024 19:59

I decided to start eating kimchi regularly at the beginning of the year and decided on that brand due to others being so expensive. Anyways, I had the most horrendous wind and upset stomach maybe the first 3 or 4 days. But now I'm totally fine, no dodgy side affects so I'd say stick with it!!

CornedBeef451 · 24/01/2024 20:06

Jackfruit had this effect on me,

I went through a meat free Monday phase and tried pulled jackfruit. I wasn't a huge fan but the next morning it was like something had died inside me and was fighting to get out.

The wind was violent, both loud and incredibly smelly, accompanied by stabbing pains and gurgling.

I was so scared to move on the train in case I released the beast. I had to wait on the train until everyone got off and then scurry after them.

I farted on every step on the way to the office and then spent the rest of the day sprinting to the loo with my bum cheeks clenched.

Oddly I'm fine with kimchee but had to give up stuffing for the sake of my family.

Good luck with your gut biome endeavours!

lljkk · 24/01/2024 20:10

I have a cast iron stomach.
Kimchi just tastes rank, there are nicer ways to achieve healthy gut microbiota.
