Eat kimchi, die alone.

I have tried to eat some kimchi (vadasz raw kimchi) over the last couple of days , about 3 of tablespoons each day. Seriously, I am disgusted by my own stench. Horrendous farts. Trying to eat for gut health. But honestly, it's like there's something dead trying to escape from my gut a few hours after eating it. Should I persevere? Anyone else have this problem ? Also bad after broccoli, sprouts, kale, cabbage etc. I sleep in the spare room after a Sunday roast !!!!

Can somebody link to all the published research papers saying this stuff clearly works on the gut and why we need it?

Papillon23 · 24/01/2024 20:14

Firstly worth thinking about whether you have an intolerance to galacto-oligosaccharides. I can't eat lentils, broad beans, chickpeas etc - they just make me resolutely unwell.

Secondly if you know cabbage etc disagrees with you, why not pick an alternative fermented product rather than supercharge something that makes your insides go funny?

I have IBS but kombucha agrees with me more than any of the other options.

Just another thought: everyone's digestion is a bit different. My DH has IBS and can't eat all sorts of 'healthy' things, including brassicas and lentils which you've mentioned, as well as many other things. No amount of easing in gently is going to help his gut tolerate sauerkraut.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: perhaps easing in gently might work for you, but perhaps it won't.

lavenderlou · 24/01/2024 20:21

I caught part of a programme about fermented foods on the radio this afternoon. The guy on there was saying that some people do find them difficult to tolerate so it might not be for you. Kefir yoghurt might be gentler?

Swap to sauerkraut.

And start smaller. A teaspoon, then build up.

Yes, sauerkraut doesn't have garlic so it will probably be easier for you.

Also, 3 tablespoons is too much to start with. Try half a teaspoon and build up.

honestly you should persevere, if your body isn't used to fermented and high fibre food it will take it a while to acclimatise but it will and you will be healthier for it ....

Why don't you just say what it is you want to say?

loveyouradvice · 28/01/2024 23:06

agree with @rhubarb84 above but definitely worth exploring whether you are one of the majority for whom it is hugely beneficial....

Best for gut is usually eating a wide range - I do them all - kombucha, kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi plus all the veggies etc... but in small regular quantities and my gut biome is fabulous as a result.

I did have to ease into them, despite having a healthy diet already ... agree with a half a tablespoon 2-3 times a week... or start with the kombucha/kefir which are easier`? Find out what your body can tolerate and then build up slowly...

And have fun! Eat the stuff you enjoy... I don't like the really hot stuff but love the rest....

I used to get instant diarrhoea after eating kimchi. Was annoying as I love it! But that was just after coming out of lockdown and I think my body was only used to eating food I had cooked at home as I also sometimes got it after eating out.

I stopped eating it for a while and then tried again and I'm fine with it now. I love it with cheese and crackers. It also stops me getting a bloated stomach. Whenever I stop eating it for a while I feel bloated until I start eating it again. Probably have it 3-4 times a week.

LightDrizzle · 28/01/2024 23:40

I made a Tom Kerridge recipe with Jerusalem artichokes. There were a lot if artichokes. I’d read that Jerusalem artichokes are lethal but we went to bed and no problem, obviously immune. I was teaching the next morning and felt ominous rumblings. I clung on until the break time and got to a thankfully empty loo and OMG! I nearly went through the ceiling! I messaged DH and the same thing was happening to him. I’m not generally very windy but I didn’t realise the human body had the capacity to store that much wind. It was endless and loud, I’m usually silent when I whisper the odd puff out 😂

God it was delicious though!

Sauerkrautsandwich · 29/01/2024 04:14

Jerusalem artichoke, the potato of the poor, is well famous for that yeah😂

BlastedPimples · 29/01/2024 05:42

@loveyouradvice how do you know your gut biome is fabulous? Is there a test to find out?

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 29/01/2024 09:59

MeemawTucker · 24/01/2024 07:44

there's something dead trying to escape from my gut

I think there actually is! Part of the point of eating kimchi is that it kills off bad bits in your gut microbiome and replaces them with good bits. I’m sure there is a more scientific way to describe it but you trump out the decomposed bacteria and so on…

I love it (and eat that brand) but yes it does have an impact….

Is that true ? I haven't heard it but it would be nice.
OP you're giving me flashbacks to when I ate a pan of undercooked homegrown Jerusalem artichokes, it felt like small animals were running around in my intestines. You just have to wait it out Flowers

loveyouradvice · 29/01/2024 13:00

@BlastedPimples I've done Zoe which analyses your gut biome - really recommend, has been great for me

Kefir.

Increases good gut bacteria, doesn’t cause you to release noxious gases.

I couldn’t get off the loo with Kefir. Tried so many times.

Spud90 · 31/01/2024 10:10

I love kimchi and haven't noticed an increase in gas when I eat it. However, one time I made kimchi fried rice with 1 cup of kimchi in and holy moly spicy diarrhoea! It was awful. Try 1 tablespoon and increase it slowly? The probiotics can give you an upset stomach if you're not used to it.

Daylightsavingscrime · 06/02/2024 17:11

Sounds like your digestive system isn’t used to fibre. It should adapt over time but in the meantime eat it in small frequent amounts.

OMGitsnotgood · 07/02/2024 10:58

I've just noticed this thread. Was wondering why I was so windy - and really unpleasant wind - the last couple of days. I had kimchi on Saturday night - just a small side dish. Would a small amount have that effect? My body is very used to fibre, but not kimchi.

loveyouradvice · 07/02/2024 12:55

Yes @OMGitsnotgood it easily can. It is being used to that type of fermented food rather than fibre, I think. I know I can now eat a fair bit each day but it took me time to work up to this
