What do your children have in their sandwiches?

DD1 has just started preschool and takes a packed lunch but I have no idea what to put in her sandwiches. So far I've come up with.... ham but she can't have that every day, so what else can I put in?

She can't eat cheese btw.

GColdtimer · 11/03/2008 11:57

great minds eh:

oh, if peanut butter isn't allow, the health food shops often do cashnew nut or hazlenut which might be OK?

ComeOVeneer · 11/03/2008 11:59

Pitta filled with salad, houmous and falafels. Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels. Tortilla wraps with chicken, roasted peppers, mild salsa and sour cream. Or he takes pasta salad, or a pot of houmous with carrots, cucumber, red peppers etc, a small youghurt and fruit salad.

notnowbernard · 11/03/2008 12:03

DD can't have eggs at nursery because a little girl there has an egg allergy, so might be best to check first

OverMyDeadBody · 11/03/2008 12:04

same as comeoveneer, also pittas filled with grated apple and carrot mixed with cream cheese or humus, taramasalata and cherry tomatoes, pear and apple spread, banana and honey, tuna mayo with crated carrot and sweetcorn. Also, pink sandwitches- grated cooked beetroot mixed with cream cheese or sour cream or humus...the possibilities are endless!

breadgirl · 11/03/2008 12:07

I will do plain cucumber
ham and cucumber with/wo mayo
plain ham

pasta salads
salad potatoes
cucumber sushi

sagacious · 11/03/2008 12:11

Jam
Spam

sagacious · 11/03/2008 12:12

But not ham

MoosMa · 11/03/2008 12:12

Thanks all, I might have to do some experimenting, I have no idea what houmous, falafels or taramasalata are...

OMDB, they sound a bit messy, DD1 is only 2.5 and tends to eat sandwiches from the top down (bread, cucumber, lick salad cream off ham, ham, bread!)

ham
cheese
cheese and pickle
ham and pickle
chicken

anything like cucumber, tomato or lettuce is taken out and left on the plate

GrinningSoul · 11/03/2008 12:18

sounds odd but grated carrot and hummus is good, kind of gives body to the sandwich. tuna mayo, egg mayo. those are the usuals around here. along with the mainstay, ham. cucumber also allowed by ds.

shrooms · 11/03/2008 12:20

Hummous is ground chickpeas with tahini (sesame paste) garlic, oil, lemon juice and any other flavourings you feel like adding. It is delish and so healthy.

My kids like the following:

Peanut butter/almond butter and banana/raisins
Hummous and grated carrot and spinach
Linda mccartney sausages and salad
Soya cheese and pickle
Grilled courgette and hummus
Butter beans with pesto
Grilled smoked tofu made in to eggless egg salad with vegan mayo and spices
Curried tofu and veg mayo
fake ham or tofurky with salad
Falafel (like burgers made of chickpeas)
vegan choc spread with peanut butter (very occasionally!)

Also I like to vary the bread so they'll have any of those fillings in pitta, on a bagel or in a wholewheat wrap.

MoosMa · 11/03/2008 12:23

Blimey you lot are inventive!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 11/03/2008 13:29

My dd will only eat ham, cheese, cheese spread or smoked salmon!!!! I go for varying the bread!! I use different bread/ bagels (although the first time she thought it was a doughnut and didn't eat it!!) / wraps/ pitta bread. I fill little tiny tupperware boxes with little things (carrot sticks/ a wee crispy cake, a couple of midget gems/ dried fruit) for her to investigate.

hifi · 11/03/2008 13:39

dd has become a nightmare, cheese spread and white bread, she will not have any bread with bits in now.any healthy cheese spresds out there?

shrooms · 11/03/2008 13:41

I suppose you could blend cheese with milk?

Mikafan · 11/03/2008 13:41

My DS is the same, he'll only eat ham sandwiches. He went through a very brief period of having cucumber in it too but that didn't last long. Its not good for him I know but what do you do if they won't eat anything else

rey · 11/03/2008 13:49

butter/marg/blank they hate things in by the time it's lunchtime doesn't taste the same.

breadgirl · 11/03/2008 17:55

Moosma, i meant cucumber in the rice roll, but i'll do salmon sushi, avocado ..
