What do your children have in their sandwiches?

DD1 has just started preschool and takes a packed lunch but I have no idea what to put in her sandwiches. So far I've come up with.... ham but she can't have that every day, so what else can I put in?

She can't eat cheese btw.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 12/03/2008 14:46

At least cheese is cheaper than the smoked salmon my 4 yr old demands!

Ham
Cheese
Jam

They are simple souls!

Hulababy · 12/03/2008 14:57

One or more of the following:

Ham
Cheese
Humous
Egg
Salad
Chicken (well, most cold meat)
Jam
Honey
Bacon
Sausage
Banana
Crisps

Have probably missed things out TBH.

She also sometimes prefers to have all the bits seperate to make up her own, make wraps or to eat as a finger buffet style meal.

Hulababy · 12/03/2008 14:58

DD doesn't have packed lunch for school but likes sandwiches for lunch at weekends.

ChopsTheDuck · 12/03/2008 14:58

why not think about alternatives to sandwhiches every day?
pasta/rice salads, croissants, brioche rolls, quiche, pasties, sausage rolls, wraps, cold pizza, jacket pots.

Overrun · 12/03/2008 15:02

Only ham I'm afraid, he did use to like tuna mayo and cheese, but now turning his nose up. He always has a drink and a apple or some other fruit. This seems to be enough and he says he doesn't have time to eat any more.
Wish he would consent to some salad in his sandwhiches though
I console myself with the fact, that he eats good meals at home, even if he is very fussy and controlling over his sandwhiches

sardines
smoked mackerel
egg
avocado
sliced sausage
cold fish finger
salami

I love some of these suggestions but my son has recently become very conservative in his tastes and doesn't try new things easily. Might try a couple and see how they go down.

He does quite like tuna mixed with philly (if your will eat that it is great for holding a sarnie together!) and grated carrot or cucumber (or both) and chopped olives.

Ham and marmite is usually a hit.

He likes helping to make them, but only usually at the time of eating so that might not work for a packed lunch.

You could also try putting a leftover slice of homemade pizza or quiche if those work well?

callan · 12/03/2008 18:59

Peanut butter and jam.
Wafer thin turkey/chix.
Roast beef with mayo & a little horseradish.
BLT.
Banana sandwiches (my fave...still).
It's too easy to get strung up on sandwiches, why not small pots of different things like carrot & cucumber sticks, crisps/crackers/bread sticks, strawberries & grapes, a banana, a yoghurt/rice pudding so packed lunch isn't soooooooo boring with sandwiches all the time.

GreatAuntieWurly · 12/03/2008 19:06

cheese
jam
marmite
or just recently pork luncheon meat (which is a huge thing for ds1 as he has never liked cold meat of any sort)

Tho he does like a variety of breads so we vary things that way.

worley · 12/03/2008 21:31

ds1 rotates by term, so this term is strawberry jam (with no bits, god forbid he has a bit of actual fruit in it)
tuna
ham
choc spread

that is all,

worley · 12/03/2008 21:32

actually i lie, he did have a few days of feta cheese filled pitta breads after he tried it on greek day at school.

worley · 12/03/2008 21:34

oooh, he does have alsice of cold pizza sometimes and on a monday he will have cold drumsticks left over from the sunday roast.

(i promise i wont add anything else now{smile)

chocolatespiders · 12/03/2008 21:35

my 2 both ahve ham every day...

dd1 has had the same for last 5 years... she sometimes has cucumber with ham

pointydog · 12/03/2008 21:37

dd1 always slices of mild cheese, nothing else, not even butter.

dd2 always ham and cucumber with butter.

Nothing wrong with always having the same on a sandwich.

collision · 12/03/2008 21:39

DS1 has 'white ham' which is actually Bernard Matthews sliced chicken!

or cheese and cucumber
choc spread
jam

only allowed choc spread and jam if he has healthy raw veg and fruit

DS2 has white ham or parmesan and cucumber.

DoubleBluff · 12/03/2008 21:40

DS2 - ham and cucumber - every day.
DS1 - chicken paste
or tuna mayo, or ham.

eekamoose · 12/03/2008 21:43

Tinned red or pink salmon (drain liquid off then empty contents into bowl and use a couple of forks to get bones/skin out - feed those bits to cat, in my household anyway) flake up and mix with a tiny bit of mayo. Lovely on thin brown or white bread, with or without cucumber.

VictorianSqualor · 12/03/2008 21:45

We don't do sandwiches, she just doesn't eat them. We have snack-a-jacks, or crackers and cheese, or breadsticks and cheese with a yoghurt, raisins, cereal bar and a banana/grapes/cherry toms or apple for snacktime.

VictorianSqualor · 12/03/2008 21:48

Oh she sometimes has pasta salad, or pittas/wraps to make herself with sliced cheese, ham, carrot and cucumber.

pointydog · 12/03/2008 22:27

I knew you would kill this thread with your pitta talk, squalor
