Is there something wrong with this?

I'm a long time reader of this site and signed up to prove a point to my husband.

I made a nice meal of chicken, rice and crisps but my husband thinks it's weird.

It's no different to adding potatoes, crisps are just a different form. Am I wrong here???

They eat crisps with chicken and rice in Portugal, the crisps are considered the potato option. You need a nice salad with it

they are fried thinly sliced potatoes yes, not out the packet like walkers

you need some cookery lessons

Parlourgames · 18/07/2023 16:47

Not in the villages I’ve been to!

purplecorkheart · 18/07/2023 16:47

I wouldn't have both the crisps and rice together. I assume the chicken was hot so would have with rice. However if I was having the chicken cold with salad I would mind the crisps them. Wouldn't have the tomato sauce with either and probably would plate slightly differently to make it appear more appetising.

waterlego · 18/07/2023 16:48

i agree with PPs that some veg or salad wouldn’t have gone amiss.

I’m not sure why you’re pointing out that crisps are potatoes in a different form. Well yes, but I wouldn’t normally eat potatoes AND rice as part of the same meal; I’d choose one or the other (unless it was a buffet/BBQ and I was having little tastes of various different dishes).

Having said that, I’m not a fussy eater at all and would eat that if you served it to me.

Parlourgames · 18/07/2023 16:49

In fact, the Batata palha you have there are Portugese. I think you are asking the wrong people here as it’s not a widespread custom!

Is it about the texture?
I mean rice & chicken are "soft".

Cucumber, carrots and celery are also crunchy. They will even add colour to your dish - makes it a lot more appealing!!

AdaColeman · 18/07/2023 16:50

It's not a combination I'd serve up, so I'm on Team Husband here!

AuntieMarys · 18/07/2023 16:51

Where are the vegetables????

senua · 18/07/2023 16:52

I can understand a bit of crisp to give a crunch (like putting breadcrumbs on top) but I think you overdid it!

drspouse · 18/07/2023 16:52

We like a chicken and potato curry with rice but THIS IS NOT THE SAME.

powerhousesandra · 18/07/2023 16:56

it was honestly very nice, the image doesnt matter its what the food tastes like

heckmuffin · 18/07/2023 17:02

Yuk, looks like slop, sorry. It's not even the weird crisps on top. It's just sloppy baby food with no vegetables or texture.

Crisps might be made from potatoes, but they are not the same thing.

SweetAndSourChick3n · 18/07/2023 17:02

I would eat it to be polite but probably not rush back to eat at your house again! I wouldn't serve potatoes with rice anyway though.

SoupDragon · 18/07/2023 17:03

I ate something similar at a friend's house and it was delicious! I was very sceptical at first.

PhilipTurner5 · 18/07/2023 17:05

I'm a big fan of potato chips and ketchup so love this kind of thing, assuming the chicken is underneath and tasty too.. But this is definitely more common in Brazil and Portugal, so I can understand the negative comments in this thread, but having tasted this kind of meal before I can highly recommend it.

powerhousesandra · 18/07/2023 17:05

its just a portugease/brazilian thing, shows ppl on the internet just insult anything physically

CurlewKate · 18/07/2023 17:07

There is an old fashioned English thing called Game Chips. Which are basically crisps.

cocksstrideintheevening · 18/07/2023 17:09

You don't need potatoes and rice op.

Tbh it looks like some of the shit recipes on tik tok that are strangely fascinating, mostly American and look awful.

yes, the friend who made it when I had it is Brazilian.

UniversalTruth · 18/07/2023 17:30

@powerhousesandra is your dh from the UK? I think this thread shows that it's not a thing here, but if you'd started your OP by saying "I cooked a famous Portuguese dish of rice, chicken & crisp sticks, but my husband wouldn't eat it" you'd get different replies.

If he tried it and said he didn't like it, then that's up to you if you cook it again.
