If you had to make 40 filled rolls.

I need to feed some volunteers, grab and go style. I'm thinking rolls, crisps, fruit and baking. I'm thinking average two rolls each. Let's say 40 to be on the safe side.

Don't want to spend an excessive amount, but do want it to be decent. Also don't want to get bogged down in faffy fillings.

What tips do you have?

What fillings and in what proportions?

Definitely vegetarians in attendance, possibly vegans. I'm not going to start taking orders.

If there's no refrigeration dump my suggestion of chicken. Then it's similar to @Rightnowstraightaway suggestion

  • Hummus and falafel, or hummus and roast veg or grated carrot
  • Grated cheese
  • Tuna mayo

Maybe have two containers of cocktail sausages (one meat and one vegan).

Add in fruit and cakes/flapjacks.

It is controversial!! So its best keep it to simple contents to the sandwiches- less in them the less chance there's something people will dislike.

I mean it's more likely people will gag at the inclusion of margarine than be angrily whispering to each other about the exclusion of a delicious layer a marg on the sandwiches someone else prepared for them.

Au contraire Grin I find a sandwich without butter to be a crime against nature. It's not even a sandwich, is it - just bread with things falling out of it. Perverse.

I find a sandwich without butter/marge (don't mind which) dry, unappetising and the fillings tend to fall out, with one exception which is hot fillings such as bacon or sausages which should NEVER be buttered.

I love an occasional bacon sandwich and I always butter the bread, but then I don't like sauce with bacon. Another can of worms opened!

Just logging on to see if there was a final decision. I'm sure we've mashed OP's brain completely.

Mainstay soft white rolls.

Then just lick them and hand them out. Demand a thank you.

Up thread a PP told me that grating carrot is really easy and safe if you have a food processor.
There was me wondering why I was using my traditional box grater. Huh. Whatever next?

That was me. I know I would grate my knuckles if I tried to grate carrot on a box grater. I manage not to when grating cheese, somehow.

Haha, that's actually true! Cheese v's carrot.

I'm thinking it's the shape... Big block of cheese (final small chunk in mouth) v a fairly small and thin, hard slippery thing!

I feel like a scientist now. Morning! Bleugh.

I don't have a food processor. I do however have a mandolin that I darent use!

No, hot fillings are even BETTER with a layer of butter: the butter melts as you add the very hot thing, then you put the top layer of bread and butter on top and that melts too, and forms an excellent seal around the contents.

The best butter and hot filling sandwich is a fish finger one: the base layer of plasticky white pap bread hermetically sealed against Captain Bird’s Eye’s finest by the melted butter, then the tartare holds the lettuce to the fish finger from below and the butter holds the lettuce to the bread from above.

A sandwich without butter may as well be a sandwich without BREAD. Lunacy.

Goldencup · 16/06/2023 07:09

So OP I think the easiest is:
10x plain ham with lettuce
10x cheese and pickle
10x vegan option (peanut butter or hummus+ carrot) without butter/ marg
Then 10 plain unbuttered rolls with a pack of those preprepared slices of cheese for the fuss pots.

No sauce, no butter. Bacon and bread are perfection on their own.

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 16/06/2023 07:26

A fish finger sandwich should always be eaten with good old salad cream.

That's my opinion anyway.

Oh OP, the can of worms you have opened!

Baldieheid · 16/06/2023 08:47

Nope nope nope

Bacon butty MUST have butter, that melts and oozes as you eat.

It's the law.

In my house.

Pourmeanotherwine · 17/06/2023 09:35

Peanut butter and jam would be fine for my veggie/ vegan teens. Cant stand the stuff myself though, so probably divisive.

Tofuislovely · 17/06/2023 12:24

I think ShaowPuppet's idea was good. (I am a vegan and would be happy with any of the vegan options suggested on here though- would just be happy to be catered for tbh.)

Namechangeforthis88 · 17/06/2023 20:33

We'll, I don't want to spoil anyone's fun so of course you can continue the debate, but the rolls have been filled and eaten. I lost track of exactly how many of each, it was rough proportions.

Humus and red pepper all gone.
Plain cheese all gone. Only did a small number of these. At least one person managed to add crisps to plain cheese while engaged in sport which was impressive to witness. Whether they could have sorted out a pot of gravy or flask of satay sauce I don't know.
Also did cheese and pickle, egg mayo, ham and tomato, peanut butter and jam.

No complaints. Some leftovers but we were too busy for people to have much of a chance to eat a lottery.

bussteward · 17/06/2023 20:58

But did you grate the cheese!!!

Namechangeforthis88 · 18/06/2023 07:03

@bussteward I did! Bloody hell I couldn't believe how much further it went! Got the husband to grate, lined up a batch of rolls and scattered on them all at once.

Well done! Sounds like a great success.
