Zero alcohol beers

Are there any that don't taste like horse wee? Every week night and Sunday we share a 500 ml bottle of beer before our tea. An apéro if you like. Because one of us has pre-hypertension, we thought we'd try one or two alcohol-free days each week. Tried Doom Bar Zero and Days Alcohol Free Pale Ale. Both: Yuk. They taste like beer that has been boiled until it has a flavour like malty pop. Which is probably exactly what it is. The Doom Bar reminded me a bit of Dandelion and Burdock gone wrong. Are they all like that? I think we should probably try something else than zero-beer, but what?

I like Big Drop the one with the blue label.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/06/2023 09:09

I had some Brewdog ones a few months ago that tasted nice.

Spidertights · 10/06/2023 09:09

We've recently had the Nirvana Brewery stout, IPA, and lager. I'm not an IPA fan anyway but liked the stout (quite light but tasty) and really, really like the lager. We either buy direct or from Ocado. It's not cheap, but cheaper than the wine we were drinking too much of and we feel sooo much better for it.

You might be better substituting with something that's got its own flavour, but you could have a look at the Club Soda shop for some inspiration for beers.

My recommendation would be the Nonsuch Shrubs cordials - with soda water and ice, they taste amazing.

Funkyslippers · 10/06/2023 09:12

I really like Perlenbacher from Lidl and I don't even like normal lager!

WitchyPoos · 10/06/2023 09:12

The corona one is nicest I find

Mxflamingnoravera · 10/06/2023 09:15

Another vote for Brewdog here. It tastes like beer, it's not sweet and it doesn't taste "empty" like the ones where the alcohol is removed after brewing. I often have a can if I'm having an alcohol free day and it's completely satisfying.

Punk AF or Nanny State.

DustyLee123 · 10/06/2023 09:15

I’ve heard that the Guinness is very good.

Baldieheid · 10/06/2023 09:16

DH enjoys Guinness zero, and Erdinger 0%. He had Peroni 0% in a restaurant last

Cindy1802 · 10/06/2023 09:17

Heineken zero is the best lager. Actually has some beer flavour in it.

If you are used to drinking alcohol though, all NA beers will taste a bit lack-lustre at first... don't expect to find one that tastes like normal beer!

Baldieheid · 10/06/2023 09:17

Flip, posted too soon.

Peroni 0 last week was "passable" if it were all that was on offer.

BarelyLiterate · 10/06/2023 09:18

Erdinger alkoholfrei is quite good, if a bit sweet. It’s very popular in German speaking countries, where it is marketed as a sports drink.

I think that's the trouble - we like the taste of drinks with alcohol in them! I suppose liking alcohol is not as bad as having to drink it because of being addicted. We haven't used any salt or sugar in our house for 20 years, and are all the healthier for it, so I think we'll try to find a substitute beverage that isn't ersatz. I hate decaf coffee and tea, and artificial sweeteners also. DH doesn't mind decaf.

Also recommend Lucky Saint and second the recommendation of Heineken 0, and Club Soda - a range of low and no alcohol, we got some really nice stuff from there.

ThisIsTrifficult · 10/06/2023 09:32

Surprisingly Heineken zero, the Aldi 0% in bottles, and the Guinness 0%.
Tried many while pregnant and these were all really good!

brownbeauty80 · 10/06/2023 09:36

Cobra zero is amazing..

MsMarple · 10/06/2023 09:36

I like Lucky Saint and Becks Blue lagers - they have the lowest sugar content, and some others are too sweet.

MagpiePi · 10/06/2023 09:40

I like Guinness 0%.

A friend who tried some recently said it tasted like a ‘light’ Guinness. I haven’t drunk alcoholic drinks for ages so I can’t tell any more.

I like Doom bar and Aldi/Lidl own brand lagers but they definitely give me a very mild hangover the next day.

Bramblecrumble22 · 10/06/2023 09:40

Brewdog punk af

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 10/06/2023 09:40

Lucky Saint. It's made by the same people as Camden Hells and is fab.

MagpiePi · 10/06/2023 09:41

I got a mixed case from Dry Drinker and there were a few in there that I liked - maybe you could try doing that?

randomsabreuse · 10/06/2023 09:44

I like the Leffe, Erdinger and Hoegarten AF beers best. Then cold lagers including the Lidl one.

BattleofBeamfleot · 10/06/2023 09:49

Brewdog Punk AF and Beavertown Lazer Crush are the two closest to regular beer IMO. (Becks Blue tastes like beer-flavoured fizzy pop, a pint of Erdinger will still give you the beer shits and Brewdog Nanny State can be too heavy/full bodied to drink more than one or two.)

But the first two DH will buy for himself to drink on weekend days he wants to watch rugby in the middle of the day but needs to drive after!

Ooh I might need to try this. Love a Camden Hells.
