Zero alcohol beers

Are there any that don't taste like horse wee? Every week night and Sunday we share a 500 ml bottle of beer before our tea. An apéro if you like. Because one of us has pre-hypertension, we thought we'd try one or two alcohol-free days each week. Tried Doom Bar Zero and Days Alcohol Free Pale Ale. Both: Yuk. They taste like beer that has been boiled until it has a flavour like malty pop. Which is probably exactly what it is. The Doom Bar reminded me a bit of Dandelion and Burdock gone wrong. Are they all like that? I think we should probably try something else than zero-beer, but what?

Adnams Ghost Ship 0.5 is excellent. Personally I don’t like beer, but my DH couldn’t taste the difference. San Miguel is another one that he likes.

XiCi · 10/06/2023 09:54

I think I've tried them all over the past 12 months. The best lager is by far is Becks Blue, tastes exactly like a real beer

Best IPA is Big Drop Citra IPA, my beer loving DH couldnt tell this was alcohol free. As there wasnt an alcohol free section in the World Beer awards they entered it into the competition anyway and it won. Its really good

Beachhutnut · 10/06/2023 09:54

Lucky Saint, Peroni zero, Birra Moretti zero and Erdinger Alkoholfrei are my faves.

OldTinHat · 10/06/2023 10:05

Another one voting for Becks Blue. Its delightful.

cashmerecardigans · 10/06/2023 10:23

Brewdog Punk IPA or we've found a really nice one by Beavertown called Lazer Crush. It's not available everywhere but most big Sainsburys stock it

SummaLuvin · 10/06/2023 10:38

I can't recommend a non-alcoholic beer, but if you are ok with trace alcohol the best non-alcoholic drink is a rock shandy. Angostura bitters, plenty of ice, half soda water, half lemonade - so refreshing, it's my ultimate warm weather drink.

FreeButtonBee · 10/06/2023 11:01

The absolute best AF lager is free damm- it’s very very good

JandalsAlways · 10/06/2023 11:19

Heineken is actually ok! Best I've tried.

MrsRachelDanvers · 10/06/2023 11:21

Erdinger AF is very good if you lie weißbier. Otherwise, I like Ghost Ship AF. Try the pale ale types rather than the lager. Estrella Damm AF is passable.

KnottyKnitting · 10/06/2023 12:57

My DH drinks quite a bit of AF beer- he likes Brew dog Nanny State, which is darker- more like a bitter. For lager he likes the Heineken Zero.

Punk AF or Nanny State.

Yep, these are good. You can get a mixed pack which includes these and Hazy Jane. They're all good.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/06/2023 13:47

Erdinger is excellent.

I once didn't drive home after drinking 3 pints of it because I couldn't believe something so good could be 0%.

PeacefulInTheDeep · 10/06/2023 14:33

I like Erdinger, Ghost Ship and the Brew Dog ones the best. They hit the spot at 5 on a Friday.

AHugeTinyMistake · 10/06/2023 14:36

Agree with PP

Erdinger, Ghost Ship and Guinness are the best ones I've tried. Erdinger do a grapefruit one which is AMAZING but the standard one is very commonly available

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 10/06/2023 14:42

I came on to recommend Mikeller AF. It’s the best I’ve tried so far.

Songlines · 10/06/2023 14:43

I'm sitting in the sun drinking an alcohol free Brewdog Hazy Jane. Didn't want the afternoon headache.
It's very good and a mixed case of 8 cans is currently on offer in Sainsburys for £7 with a nectar card

Ticketybooboo · 10/06/2023 14:50

Becks blue is the only nice one imo, with the Lidl one second.

tweetypi · 10/06/2023 16:48

Corona (especially with a slice of lime) and cobra are my favourites. Have also enjoyed Seedlip and tonic.

DewinDwl · 10/06/2023 17:32

Drop Bear Beers - craft beers, company funded by two women.

stargirl1701 · 10/06/2023 17:34

I like Corona Zero but it needs lime.

JorisBonson · 10/06/2023 17:35

I find the IPA ones taste like IPA and not wee!

mindutopia · 12/06/2023 09:31

It depends on what sort of beer you like. Corona Cero and Lucy Saint are the nicest that you can buy in a normal supermarket.

The Brew Dog ones are also good if you like that style of beer. They have a sampler box, which is all their usual beers but AF.

Wise Bartender has a great selection. I had one from there the other day, which I think was called Smashed Ale. It was really nice.

The Guinness 0.0% is probably closest to the real thing, but a bit heavy for summer.

Yes love Becks Blue. I'll have to pop into Lidl and try theirs as that's one I haven't tried yet. I used to love Corona so was excited about a Corona zero but it is vile, thought it tasted nasty , strange aftertaste, and it went straight down the sink. I have a becks blue with fresh lime to make a more refreshing summer drink. The Stella Artois zero is good as well.

Citygirlrurallife · 12/06/2023 09:38

BattleofBeamfleot · 10/06/2023 09:49

Brewdog Punk AF and Beavertown Lazer Crush are the two closest to regular beer IMO. (Becks Blue tastes like beer-flavoured fizzy pop, a pint of Erdinger will still give you the beer shits and Brewdog Nanny State can be too heavy/full bodied to drink more than one or two.)

But the first two DH will buy for himself to drink on weekend days he wants to watch rugby in the middle of the day but needs to drive after!

I was going to say Brew Dog Punk and beavertown too. I find lager even with alcohol insipid anyway so all the 0% lagers taste of Piss water, but these two have at least some flavour to them
