Is it even possible to buy these anymore? As opposed to Easy Peelers or clementines or any other similar?

For ages I checked the labels of "easy peelers" to see what variety but since I have never ever found any satsumas labelled that way, and it was always disappointing, I stopped bothering to check!

I don’t know if it’s a new development, I’ve only noticed it this year (co-op or Lidl, not sure which)

Matildahoney · 25/11/2023 22:29

DP got me some in Asda today, but he said there was one tray out of about 20 other easy peelers and sweet Clem's!

SamphireAndSalmon · 26/11/2023 07:59

Yes at Christmas time. I frikkin HATE "easy" peelers! 😤

Yes, bloody ‘easy peelers’. I would like to have a choice about what variety of fruit I buy, thank you very much.

Shall we start a MN picket line outside any offending supermarket?

🙌

Can't find any easy peelers that aren't moldy. And no proper actual satsumas. They have been so very very poor this Christmas. I look forward to Christmas satsumas, they are in season at this exact time and every year have been so tasty at Christmas, and in December. Not this year. Really cross.

Matildahoney · 23/12/2023 17:21

@Oblomov23 DP got satsumas from Lidl up until this week where they have now had none this week, also Asda,I went to Asda the day before him and none, then he popped up the next day and they had lots

Daffyyellow · 23/12/2023 18:58

Ocado failed to deliver satsumas Managed to get hem from waitrose this morning though!

rhubarblover · 23/12/2023 20:38

I had some from Waitrose last week that were perfection, but forgot to look as I was elbowing past the Christmas hoardes today. I’ll try tomorrow.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/12/2023 07:50

I have three, yes, three bags of satsumas here. Only Christmas present I need! They won't last long. The season is short but in recent years I've found that there is another one a few months hence, so that will keep me going through the difficult satsuma-less months to come.

Two bags came from our local small Sainsbury's. I often find Sainsbury's have them when others don't. The other one I think was from a Co-op. I look every time I go into a shop at this time of year. Ocado let me down by being out of stock this week, which I will neither forget nor forgive. Xmas Angry

Can't be bothered with any of the other small citrus fruits (refuse to use the soulless and dishonest made up marketing name the supermarkets have inflicted on us in recent years to disguise the fact that virtually all of them are clementines or clemenules). Sometimes they're OK but far more often they're very sweet with no acidity, and at times really dry. Out of satsuma season I prefer oranges for my citrus hit.

sorrynotathome · 24/12/2023 07:58

Satsumas are probably the one food we eat now that is only seasonally available - something I find awful and hilarious at the same time. They are by far the best citrus for children and adults because they are ACTUALLY easy to peel and should never have any pips. Oh and they taste good 😊. My theory is that the countries where they’re grown keep satsumas for themselves and sell us the shitty “easy peelers”.

Marie1331 · 30/12/2023 10:47

so funny, I've been buying Tesco's mini bags of Sats 10 in a bag, they're gorgeous, gonna stock up on therm tomorrow, get loads of them, hopefully.

Marie1331 · 31/12/2023 12:52

Epping Tesco's got loads, packs of 6, bought 4 packs

DuesToTheDirt · 02/02/2024 13:57

What's wrong with those continentals, not liking satsumas? Confused

Oblomov23 · 02/02/2024 19:17

Christmas ones were horrible. The ones for the last week have been fabulous. Clearly a months delay due to harvest/ripening.

JPA · 03/02/2024 10:20

I wouldn't get too hung up on finding a specific variety any more. They are hybridised so easily that for all intents and purposes the distinction between clementine, tangerine and satsuma are so blurred I can't use it as a guarantee of quality. They are all 'easy peeler' now and you have to take a close look at the specific variety and country.

One week I've had tangerines that really surprise me and clementines that are just bland and washed out tasting. It all depends on where they are grown and the season/weather. Also, it didn't particularly matter what shop I went to either. I've had consistently bland clementines from waitrose and really good ones from Aldi.

GardenersDelight · 22/05/2024 17:17

Unreal!

PaddingtonTheAngelofDeath · 22/05/2024 18:13

Aldi also have Satsumas in stock at the moment.

I strongly dislike Clementines and all the other variations.

I love Satsumas.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 22/05/2024 18:19

Morrisons have them too but I miss the really baggy skinned ones that virtually peeled themselves.

I never seem to see them anymore, not even at Christmas.

PaddingtonTheAngelofDeath · 22/05/2024 18:41

I know the ones you mean Twatty I wonder why we don't see them anymore.
