Satsumas

Is it even possible to buy these anymore? As opposed to Easy Peelers or clementines or any other similar?

Easy peelers are an abomination

The name. The taste. The idea.

Ocado have some fancy Natoora satsumas, and Sainsbury’s sometimes have them at this time of year.

Satsumas are proper sour and gorgeous. Easy peelers are like the chicken tikka masalas of small oranges. Not proper food, like for babies who haven’t developed their taste buds.

They are, in short, a fucking disgrace

KnickerlessParsons · 19/11/2023 18:42

What is the difference between
•satsumas
•tangerines
•mandarins
•easy peelers

The first three, I have never understood the difference. The fourth is something made up.

KnickerlessParsons · 19/11/2023 18:46

And clementines. Forgot them

Oblomov23 · 19/11/2023 18:47

Love satsuma season. Now. Till after Christmas. Yum!

Hazey19 · 19/11/2023 18:48

i thought it was only me with a satsuma love. They do a pack of 5 large satsumas in Aldi at the moment and they are so good. I agree satsumas are far nicer than an easy peel.

PaintBySticker · 19/11/2023 18:48

another lover of satsumas here. I suspect as they’re softer growers and supermarkets don’t like them because they damage more easily.

I did get a bag from Sainsbury’s this year. Haven’t seen them again though and Ocado always sold out.

onepieceoflollipop · 19/11/2023 18:48

@KnickerlessParsons
a tangerine is apparently a cross between a mandarin and a sweet orange.
clementines are smaller and rounder than satsumas I find them too sweet.
like others on this thread (and myself in 2022 as this is an old thread) I prefer satsumas. I find them flatter, genuinely easy to peel and sharp in a good way.

Easy peelers I think (I’m probably wrong) is a generic term. A bit like the supermarket bagging a load of French golden delicious and other random/less popular apples and just generically labelling them as crisp crunchy apples…

Daffyyellow · 19/11/2023 18:49

I have also found my tribe! Satsumas can be available from the end of September. But half the time they’re not satsumas even though labelled as such. I agree you can’t order online, you have to see them to know they’re satsumas! Waitrose sometimes have them, Sainsbury’s have them more often, or at least a space on the shelf!

Thank you. I've never had one of each in the same place at the same time to make a comparison.

Why are other varieties available all year round but not satsumas (not necessarily saying it is a good thing the others are readily available)

I don't know, but as a child I loved satsuma season. I don't remember year-round availability of any of the small oranges, though maybe my satsuma love blinded me to the rest.

We used tinned mandarins quite often the rest of the year.

easy peeler... is something made up.

Yes, what kind of stupid name is that?!

AnotherEmma · 19/11/2023 19:50

I love that this thread has been revived Grin
I posted before and am unwavering in my opinion that satsumas are the only fruit. They are also much easier to peel than so-called "easy peelers" (THAT IS NOT A NAME FOR CITRUS OR INDEED ANY FRUIT).

AnneElliott · 19/11/2023 20:16

I'm glad to find others love the satsuma as much as I do! H says there's no difference with the easy peelers and clementines but I used to work for a greengrocer and there definitely is a big difference.

caringcarer · 19/11/2023 21:08

Aldi has been selling them also Morrisons.

tobee · 19/11/2023 22:59

Hello just spotted my thread had been revived 😀

I didn't find any satsumas at all last year but found some this year in M&S but they were a little bit smaller than I thought they'd be!

Oh well they tasted good!

The green ones are my favourite when I see satsumas in the shops it makes my day!

rhubarblover · 20/11/2023 11:17

Pushed past the mounds of easy peelers to find a few bags of satsumas in Morrisons today. Small but delicious!

Daffyyellow · 20/11/2023 21:31

Can confirm Ocado’s satsumas are the real deal! Yum!

bigbadbarry · 22/11/2023 13:03

Ocado ones are so good my kids ate a whole bag yesterday! I’ve sourced some more in Aldi so fingers crossed

thenightsky · 22/11/2023 14:12

I've managed to get a bag in my Tesco delivery for the last 3 weeks. Real Satsumas, mmmmm. Nothing comes near.

TotalOverhaul · 22/11/2023 14:16

AnotherEmma · 18/12/2022 20:58

Ahhh, my people Smile

Does anyone else have a husband who insists on buying non-satsumas thereby crowding the fruit bowl with inferior citrus fruit?

We have had words on this subject. He buys them for me as I can eat my bodyweight in satsumas at this time of year. But not the pallid, flavourless ones with no juice. They are just expensive fridge compost.

Yesterday he came home with a bag of real mandarins. They are delicious.

GardenersDelight · 22/11/2023 19:54

Important news on offer in lidl for 99p
Can't verify flavour as not tried them yet but risked buying two bags

Daffyyellow · 22/11/2023 20:01

Tesco ones sources yesterday. They peel right, taste right but with a few pips.

Oblomov23 · 25/11/2023 13:05

In Sainsbury's today, no satsumas. Only clementines, in bags and loose. How poor is that?

It’s always worth checking the label on easy peelers; sometimes (admittedly rarely) they are satsumas - it usually tells you the variety. Agree no other mini orange is worth bothering with!

For ages I checked the labels of "easy peelers" to see what variety but since I have never ever found any satsumas labelled that way, and it was always disappointing, I stopped bothering to check!
