The humble white potato

I'm trying to use up all food and not waste anything. Apart from something and mash or something and chips, what do you do with your potato's?

Looking for cheap, family friendly recipes.

Have you tried Cheese & Potato Pie?

TheWoollybacksWife · 27/08/2022 16:16

Boulangere potatoes - similar principle to Dauphinois but using stock instead of cream. It will freeze too.

BigFatLiar · 27/08/2022 16:17

Most things are really just mash eg cottage pie. You could cube them and add to curry, some extra veg and have a veg curry.

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/08/2022 16:19

That's one of my Winter favourites @TheWoollybacksWife Wink

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/08/2022 16:19

Forgot Gobi Aloo. We had that the other night. Cheap & delicious.

I made lentil and potato curry last night. Normally my children would moan about food without meat, but it was a big hit. Will definitely be making it again.

trampoline123 · 27/08/2022 16:57

Yeah I always put potato in a curry, makes it!

Ham hock cakes (follow recipe for fish cakes but add ham instead).

corned beef hash

mini roast potatoes baked with roasted peppers and chorizo with garlic mayo

potato and cheddar soup

loaded potato skins

potato wedges with toppings (cheese, spring onion, ham etc)

grate it to make hash browns or rostis

Hshhshsh · 27/08/2022 22:13

Crusted Potatoes (think it's a tik tok recipe in told 😂) or roast up with tomatoes and onions and stir through red pesto, think a roasted potato salad

Nachtvlinder · 27/08/2022 22:27

tiffycooks.com/crispy-potatoes-with-miso-butter/ this is lovely. You don't have to roast this, just pan fry with the miso sauce will do.

I have some potatoes that are stored in my fridge and not used from about a month ago? Would they be ok to use? How do I know?

picklemewalnuts · 29/08/2022 06:38

If they aren't stinking rotten or green, they are fine. Potatoes are traditionally stored from one season to the next.

Unless they’re very soft or green then they’re fine. Chop off the soft/green/rotten bits and use the firm white/yellow parts. Potatoes literally last for months. If you haven’t stored them correctly (never leave them in a plastic back or in a warm or light place) then they might rot but store them properly and you could have months.

I make gnocchi, used to buy it but now make with mash and flour, potato dumplings! Instead of boiling i fry in olive oil (what is largely use) bulks out anything, is filling and lends itself to a lot!

Lemonblossom · 29/08/2022 06:43

I made a version of tartiflette last night using up stuff in the fridge. A few potatoes, an onion, few bits of ham and a small bit of past it’s best Camembert mixed with a scoop of soft cheese. It was lush.

windchimesandme · 29/08/2022 06:45

Yum,off to buy a sack of spuds, great bargain if you use a lot from the local 'spud man'!

Thanks - they are still in their plastic wrapping but I have ripped the bag open so will inspect.

windchimesandme · 29/08/2022 06:50

Love the sound of ham hock cakes ! Recipe would be good!

picklemewalnuts · 29/08/2022 06:52

Ohffsomh, you won't miss a rotten potato. It's not subtle. It's one of the worst smells out there.
