What dinners do you serve with bread?

Other than soup, what meals go with a slab of fresh bread? Keen to use up a nice loaf before it goes stale.

Rotisserie chicken and salad

PhilInt · 07/03/2022 20:56

I should not have opened this thread, it's making me hungry...

Salads (if a little out of season)
You could also make breadcrumbs and maybe meatballs or steamed pudding or bread and butter budding.

BertieBotts · 07/03/2022 21:00

Only stew, soup and all day breakfast. Scrambled eggs. I'm not a huge fan of bread...

EmpressSuiko · 07/03/2022 21:06

If it’s unsliced then bunnychow!

RosesAndHellebores · 07/03/2022 21:06

Well it depends. Medium sliced - an omelette. You could spread with garlic butter and pop on an oiled baking tray to crisp up a bit. Especially nice if you use cookie cutters. Doubles up then as an accompaniment to spag bol, chilli, etc

Ordinary sliced and buttered also with cold meat, cheese, salad, etc.

A crusty loaf livens up terrifically if you hold it under a tap briefly and bung in a hot oven for just sub 10 minutes.

Or turn it into breadcrumbs and bung in the freezer for wiener schnitzel, bread sauce, macaroni toppings, etc.

Not often that I have bread with a meal although it reminds me of the 80's where we seemed to have white bread and butter with everything!

Libertybear80 · 07/03/2022 21:12

Goulash with a crispy white baguette

Oo somebody mentioned salad as being out of season but that makes me think of some wintertime salads you could try like Waldorf salad, or Belgian endives with blue cheese and pomegranate, or spinach and orange salad.

redbigbananafeet · 07/03/2022 21:18

Mince and tatties

yikesanotherbooboo · 07/03/2022 22:31

Roast vegetables
Stew of any description
Sausage and bean casserole
Soup

Barrawarra · 07/03/2022 22:34

There’s far better suggestions on here but I like to make eggy bread (French toast? Or is that just the fried one?) from old crusty bread.

bassackwards · 07/03/2022 22:34

I would probably have to grate cheese on top and grill it. After which point it would be suitable to accompany all dishes Smile

BuddhaForMary · 07/03/2022 22:35

Oh ratatouille I'd forgotten that! Love that with a chunk of crusty bread.

Georgyporky · 08/03/2022 10:57

Anything that hasn't already got a carb with it.

Bromse · 08/03/2022 11:11

I've never served a (main course) dinner with bread but it's nice with a stew; my mum used to make a beautiful lamb stew and we would have some bread with that. You could make it into garlic bread if you are having a pasta meal or chili, only takes a jiffy in the oven.

It's a few hours until dinner time, why not just use it for lunch or tea? Welsh rarebit is lovely or even a sandwich. I'm assuming you are at home, obviously if you are at work it's a different matter.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 08/03/2022 11:35

Soup, Stew, Casserole, Beef Bourguignon, ratatouille, lamb tagine, fish and chips, all day breakfast, scrambled eggs on toast, beans on toast, creamed mushrooms on toast, use it instead of a bun for burgers/hot dogs/fishfinger sandwich, croque monsieur/madame, serve bread/toast with pate or baked camembert, eggy bread, french toast.

Sandwiches can be made into a full meal with a suitable filling and sides, something like you'd get in a pub at lunchtime.

Alternatively you could make bread and butter pudding - yum!

Leftovers can be turned into breadcrumbs, croutons, bread sauce etc.

Bloodybridget · 08/03/2022 15:14

I've made a delicious fish stew (firm white fish, mussels, chorizo, gigantes or butterbeans) that cries out for a very good baguette. And a lot of white wine.

ChristinaRussell · 08/03/2022 15:16

Shakshuka

Cas112 · 08/03/2022 15:18

Potato hash with tiger bread.. yum

AnnaDelvorkina · 08/03/2022 15:20

Erm, all ? Except maybe burgers in buns, and perhaps pizza.

Gratin would be nice.

lulabelled · 08/03/2022 15:29

Macaroni cheese

gingerhills · 08/03/2022 15:41

Omelette, salad and crusty bread.
DH did a wonderful stew with crusty bread the other day.
Any main course salad like Caesar or Greek or Nicoise

Givemeallthegin8 · 08/03/2022 15:46

To use up a nice loaf I make my own take on bruschetta !

Add some olive oil, vinegar, salt, garlic & black pepper in a bowl
Chop up some tomatoes and add them in the bowl and mix well
Spread some pesto on your bread and top with the mixed chopped tomatoes
Throw in oven for about 8 minutes

Sometimes I add grated cheese

I usually serve with lasagne or pasta dish or sometimes on its own for a lunch time snack

BigWoollyJumpers · 08/03/2022 15:51

Salad! Use it to mop up the olive oil and balsamic.

BigWoollyJumpers · 08/03/2022 15:52

@Georgyporky

Anything that hasn't already got a carb with it.
And this....... pasta with bread! Never.
