Lunch ideas for someone who hates lunch

98 replies

Larryyourwaiter · 24/10/2021 00:28

I hate lunch, I always have. If I eat too much I feel sleepy, if I eat too little I get really hungry.
I can’t eat soup at lunchtime, or baked potatoes, I don’t like sandwiches, I really hate wraps, cold leftovers are rank, mayonnaise is disgusting, salad is a waste of time.

For work I force myself to have a sandwich as I am starving so I eat it. At the weekends though I refuse and like today I’ve ended up in a grumpy mess.
Sometimes I have poached eggs (which I can’t cook personally) or a bacon roll which is fine occasionally.
Is there some secret lunch idea that I am missing at nearly 50. I cook A LOT and I think lunches feel like an idea too far….

Any amazing ideas that require no effort.

@ItsDinah

Melon and parma ham. I f you're feeling really indulgent, lobster. Just boil the lobster. Much easier than boiling an egg .Get a big plate a sharp knife, a packet of butter and a roll of kitchen paper. If you're feeling chi-chi,get a butter knife and a napkin,perhaps even a fork but that risks straying into bourgeois Cut a bit of butter and dunk bits of the hot lobster in it. Goes well with champagne to drink.

This tickled me so much. Thanks for making me laugh.

I used to get the huel type shakes to replace meals when I'm feeling too ADHD to make myself eat but it did work out quite expensive. I'll have to see if I can price a few of them up w now they have become popular again.

Fireatseaparks · 31/10/2021 19:52

If I'm at home, I'll have a ready meal. I try to have a healthy one (

MrsMiddleMother · 02/11/2021 14:20

I just have whatever I fancy. I don't like cold sandwiches or leftovers. If home ill have pizza, scrambled egg on toast, bacon cob, super noodles, chicken salad. If I'm at work I often have veggie samosas and chicken satays, cereal, a sausage roll, yogurt and granola. (Obviously not all on the same day)

If you’re not in the frame of mind, eating is annoying, and the fact that it’s supposed to be nice is even more annoying. Things that will just do to get me through, for me, include bananas, crackers with butter, apples, peanuts. Soup is particularly annoying in these situations, it’s hot so you have to pay attention, not that nice, and doesn’t sto you getting hungry.

@Sparklfairy

Sorry but the suggestion of lobster for lunch is peak mumsnet.
😂 I always shave a bit of truffle onto my cheese sandwich actually 😂
BeaucoupFish · 04/11/2021 22:13

@Sparklfairy
I think it was tongue in Cheek though
Very funny imagine doing that at work in the break room 😂

@Larryyourwaiter

I haven’t got an eating disorder, I just don’t like the normal lunch type things. I never ever have.

If I could have a lunch pill I would.

My dd is the same. She has always hated the idea of lunch. Confused
chlorineirene · 05/11/2021 07:12

Just have a banana and hard boiled egg

Quick and easy sustenance with no prep needed

tinierclanger · 05/11/2021 07:15

Just get yourself some Huel. That exactly does the job you need.

Keladrythesaviour · 05/11/2021 07:22

My parents do a "continental" lunch every day without fail. So essentially a selection of nice bread, some olives, maybe those mini peppers stuffed with feta, a selection of 2/3 cheese, some nice slices of meat (cooked ham, beef, Parma ham etc). Perhaps a dip and some crudités. You buy for the week and then each day you just need to remove from the fridge. Occasionally swap stuff out for a piece of quiche / tin of mackerel etc.
It's served them well for 40years of marriage!

sourcherie · 05/11/2021 07:28

Could you try having a really big breakfast? I’ve found that whenever I’ve had a hotel breakfast - eggs, toast, yogurt, müsli, basically whatever’s going until I’m stuffed 😳 - I don’t really need lunch. A mid-afternoon snack (cup of tea, piece of cake or a yogurt with almond butter and banana) will carry me through till dinner.

sourcherie · 05/11/2021 07:32

Ps I agree - all that faff in the middle of the day - short of having a private chef to cook (lobster) for me, I’d rather take a pill.

waterlego · 05/11/2021 07:35

Have a protein shake. Supermarkets sell the stuff or you can buy it in bulk online. It comes in a range of flavours and you just mix it up with water or milk.

beautifullymad · 05/11/2021 08:15

I make muffins from ground almonds and strong cheese. They are gorgeous and I have them with a slice of strong cheddar and a bit of chutney.

Because these don't impact your blood sugar you don't get that sleepy dip after you've eaten.

Calorie dense so a single muffin will put you on a good 5 hours until your evening meal.

Ajl46 · 05/11/2021 10:15

Can you "pimp" your sandwiches to make them more appealing, eg artisan bread, crusty rolls, really nice cheeses, cured meats etc? I made ham & cucumber sandwiches every day for work for years and I can't look at one now!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 05/11/2021 14:14

@beautifullymad can you share the recipe please?

beautifullymad · 06/11/2021 06:59

I'm doing this from memory!

It's one cup of ground almonds
60g very cold butter
I heaped teaspoon of baking powder
1 cup grated strong cheddar
3/4 cup of egg, again cold.
15g powdered onion

Fill a cup cake tray with wrappers, this makes approx 5 big muffins.

Hot oven about 180

Using a food processor (or rapid rubbing in) blitz the cold butter with the ground almond until it's only just mixed. This takes seconds.

Put in all other ingredients and blitz again until just mixed.
It's the speed of this that gives the best results.

Spoon into cup cake wrappers and into a hot oven.

Check after 10 mins. I've a feeling they might take 15 but it's usually by eye. Check with a cocktail stick into the centre.

coodawoodashooda · 06/11/2021 09:58

I hate lunch too.

coodawoodashooda · 06/11/2021 10:01

@SquirrelFan

Every Sunday I roast all the iffy veg in the fridge with oil and spices. I make a grain like couscous, rice or quinoa, using flavorful stock and more spices if I want. When that's cooked, mix in the juice of a lemon and some olive oil and chopped capers or olives (I'd like onions but it's a bit antisocial). Also toast some seeds with oil and spices in a frying pan. Let everything cool, then layer it into reusable containers and refrigerate. In the morning, take one out, add some ready washed salad for crunch, and take it to work - it's yummy and I only make three days' worth so I don't get tired of it.
Tgat sounds amazing
waltzingparrot · 06/11/2021 10:04

Quesidillas. Quick and feels/tastes different to other bready products.. sprinkle grated cheese on one and shove on some chopped red pepper and spring onions (or whatever). Pop the other wrap on top and push down. Bung in oven and wait for it to melt and go crispier. Pizza slice it and eat as little as you want.

insancerre · 06/11/2021 10:10

I hate soup and can’t be bothered making sandwiches
My lunches are
Beans on toast
Cheese and crackers and grapes
Reheated pizza from tea the night before
Reheated pasta from last nights tea
Beans on toast again
I normally have a banana or a yogurt, sometimes both
And always have a mini greens and black chocolate - it’s my little treat
A cup of coffee and an uncle Jo’s mint ball and I’m good to go

HumourReplacementTherapy · 06/11/2021 10:20

For various reasons I can't eat bread/pasta/pastry and I often eat full fat yogurt with strawberries a kiwi or mango then add some chopped roast hazelnuts or walnuts.
It keeps you full all day. ( I've never been one for breakfast, ex smoker so it used to be a coffee and a fag, now it's just a coffee Grin)
It's hit to be full fat though. That low fat stuff tastes vile and won't keep you full.
