Lunch ideas for someone who hates lunch

Larryyourwaiter · 24/10/2021 00:28

I hate lunch, I always have. If I eat too much I feel sleepy, if I eat too little I get really hungry.
I can’t eat soup at lunchtime, or baked potatoes, I don’t like sandwiches, I really hate wraps, cold leftovers are rank, mayonnaise is disgusting, salad is a waste of time.

For work I force myself to have a sandwich as I am starving so I eat it. At the weekends though I refuse and like today I’ve ended up in a grumpy mess.
Sometimes I have poached eggs (which I can’t cook personally) or a bacon roll which is fine occasionally.
Is there some secret lunch idea that I am missing at nearly 50. I cook A LOT and I think lunches feel like an idea too far….

Any amazing ideas that require no effort.

The supermarkets have some nice rice and grain veg mixes in the freezer section that take only a few minutes in the microwave.

Bontanics · 24/10/2021 09:38

Huel or slim fast meal replacement shake. No thinking involved.

ByTheSea · 24/10/2021 09:38

They are pouches and can contain protein like edamame beans too. Filling but not too much.

ByTheSea · 24/10/2021 09:40

Sorry to keep posting but you can microwave at home and take in a cool bag, I've done this and they're fine without reheating.

Fritata
Sushi
Falafel
(Sausage roll, bag of crisps, Mars bar, can of Coke?)

silveryslade · 24/10/2021 09:44

Leftovers from dinner heated up. You can freeze portions so needn't be onerous,

Larryyourwaiter · 24/10/2021 09:49

I do like soup but I find it makes me ‘queasy’ after lunch, probably because I don’t sit down after.

I waste a lot of time shouting in cupboards and the fridge at the weekends/holidays wanting food to appear.

DH can only be trusted to cook bacon. Not really anything else. He’s ‘experimental’ which he thinks is awesome and everyone else doesn’t.

I used to take yoghurt with musli and fruit to work a lot. Or microwave porridge.
Or just go out for lunch! 😀

NoSquirrels · 24/10/2021 10:03

Who’s is everyone else? Any chance you have older children…?

NoSquirrels · 24/10/2021 10:04

Holidays/weekends- eat a bigger breakfast/brunch, skip lunch entirely?

EdgeOfTheSky · 24/10/2021 10:08

If the rest of your diet is healthy and balanced have a packet of crisps, a satsuma and a bar of chocolate.

Or satsuma and packet of nuts

Or a banana and some nuts.

You seem to have worked yourself into a state about lunch / food at lunch time.

Take a bag of cherries or grapes, nuts, chocolate raisins, mini cheddars etc and snack / graze.

Taoneusa · 24/10/2021 10:09

Saying you can’t poach an egg sounds…….untrue. It’s easy, you can do it.

Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon is a nice lunch?

Smoked mackerel?

You are doing your head in with the idea of “lunch” ….how about a bowl of weetabix?

Sushi?

Crumpets! With cheese on.

What’s wrong with beans on toast?!

I have a DH like that too!

Make extra at meal times in the week, microwave a half portion. Sit down with a drink post lunch to avoid indigestion.

Or move breakfast and dinner inwards (so breakfast more like 10am, dinner at 5pm) and just have something like a banana at lunch?

kittenkipping · 24/10/2021 10:12

Sushi? You can buy nice yo sushi meal sets in Tesco now

BertieBotts · 24/10/2021 10:13

:o :o Sorry OP I have no suggestions but I feel the exact same. Breakfast is easy, dinner is enjoyable, lunch gives me the rage. How dare my metabolism require yet another input? It's just exhausting.

I would do the fasting in the day thing but I get lightheaded when I skip it, and really don't need to lose any weight.

kittenkipping · 24/10/2021 10:13

Quiche? A pre packaged quiche cut into four will last you the week?

boogiewithasuitcase · 24/10/2021 10:16

If you don't like sandwiches or wraps at lunchtime, what sort of bread do you like? Maybe base your lunch around that.

MargosKaftan · 24/10/2021 10:16

And not liking leftovers- why not? Its basically a meal put in front of you that you've not had to do the effort for.

Not to be too worrying, but you sound like a couple of woman I know who have eating disorders, they cant think properly around food. Lunch is just another meal, yet its been built up in your mind as an impossible thing to deal with. Its no different to breakfast or dinner, but you don't get stressed out by those. It sounds like you are more emotionally struggling with the idea of another meal. Is it that you don't sit down as a family for that meal like dinner?

MargosKaftan · 24/10/2021 10:18

Also if you have the space to microwave soup, buy microwave meals of the posh variety. See if that helps.

lljkk · 24/10/2021 10:19

Why can't you eat whatever you like to eat for breakfast, repeat roughly midday.

Larryyourwaiter · 24/10/2021 10:21

I haven’t got an eating disorder, I just don’t like the normal lunch type things. I never ever have.

If I could have a lunch pill I would.

One of my favourite quick snacks is oatcakes with st argur cheese, grapes and some honey.

would something like that do? nice and easy, not too filling depending on how many you eat and will keep you going.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 24/10/2021 10:27

I think your problem is the effort involved in thinking about it and making it not the food itself, and it’s probably because you’re the one on point to produce meals at other times so lunch just feels like yet another chore.

I love sandwiches but I find home made ones a bit depressing especially if made the night before or in the morning hours before work. Can you buy a nice one from a sandwich shop for lunch?

Also soup - I don’t buy shop bought ones because I just don’t like onion at lunch time. It returns on me. I make delicious soups on the weekend with no onion. You might find that works for you.
