Lunch ideas for someone who hates lunch

Larryyourwaiter · 24/10/2021 00:28

I hate lunch, I always have. If I eat too much I feel sleepy, if I eat too little I get really hungry.
I can’t eat soup at lunchtime, or baked potatoes, I don’t like sandwiches, I really hate wraps, cold leftovers are rank, mayonnaise is disgusting, salad is a waste of time.

For work I force myself to have a sandwich as I am starving so I eat it. At the weekends though I refuse and like today I’ve ended up in a grumpy mess.
Sometimes I have poached eggs (which I can’t cook personally) or a bacon roll which is fine occasionally.
Is there some secret lunch idea that I am missing at nearly 50. I cook A LOT and I think lunches feel like an idea too far….

Any amazing ideas that require no effort.

Cheese and crackers? Apple.

What do you like to eat?

NoSquirrels · 24/10/2021 10:29

Eat breakfast twice…

MissSmiley · 24/10/2021 10:31

@Fleetheart

Eating pot noodles might be a 14 year old boy thing in your eyes, but so is moaning about not being arsed to make lunch.

Just eat whatever you want, why is it a big deal? What about those belvita type breakfast bars

SquirrelFan · 24/10/2021 10:38

Every Sunday I roast all the iffy veg in the fridge with oil and spices. I make a grain like couscous, rice or quinoa, using flavorful stock and more spices if I want. When that's cooked, mix in the juice of a lemon and some olive oil and chopped capers or olives (I'd like onions but it's a bit antisocial). Also toast some seeds with oil and spices in a frying pan. Let everything cool, then layer it into reusable containers and refrigerate. In the morning, take one out, add some ready washed salad for crunch, and take it to work - it's yummy and I only make three days' worth so I don't get tired of it.

And instant ramen are actually amazing. You can even drop an egg in while they cook..instant tasty poached egg!

I haven’t got an eating disorder, I just don’t like the normal lunch type things. I never ever have.

If I could have a lunch pill I would.

But you have disordered thinking around one particular part of your diet. If you dont like traditional lunch meals, have a dinner meal. Or a breakfast meal. Why do you think you have to have a special type of food midday? Reheat leftovers from dinner. Buy better quality ready meals. Stuffed pasta with some pesto on would be ready in under 5 mins.

Dont make yourself have a "proper" lunch at lunchtime if you dont like it. If you are happy to eat other meals and dont find them stressful, why do you feel lunchtime will be hardwork?

Seeline · 24/10/2021 10:44

If you don't like the work microwave, how about investing in a food flask. As long as you pre-heat with boiling water and make sure the food is really hot when it goes in, everything will still be hot for lunch. DD has one for college and has pasta meals, soup etc in it. Will also keep things cold so rice salads, pasta salads etc.

AliceinBorderland · 24/10/2021 10:59

@NoSquirrels

So you don’t like leftovers heated up, soup or baked potatoes or cold stuff or bread or sandwiches?

Yeah, you’re buggered really.

Quiche? Picnic style tapas/mezze- keep selection in fridge at beginning of week chuck random bits in as you fancy them.

Well exactly.

Eat a bigger breakfast. Eat break fast when you get into work.

You're an adult you know how to feed yourself by now or you ought to.

AdaColeman · 24/10/2021 11:05

Large gin & tonic with crisps and olives. Or if you want to be really healthy, a pint of Guinness.

Beamur · 24/10/2021 11:06

Cubes of ham, babybel, bag of crisps
Milkshake
Banana
If you really can't be bothered to eat, how about those breakfast replacement drinks?
I reckon for lunch you're a grazer.Take a box with a few cold bits and pieces and snack until you've had enough.

poppymaewrite · 24/10/2021 11:08

Pasta! Can get pre-made.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 24/10/2021 11:11

Just skip it you’ll get used to it after a couple of days.

@Larryyourwaiter Huel is literally a lunch pill, 400 calories, drink it, hunger gone, easy, buy the ready made one, it's what I do, literally can't be arsed thinking about food
Larryyourwaiter · 24/10/2021 11:40

G&T and olives sounds like a winner actually.

@sashh I guess I just don't belong here SadGrin

JovialNickname · 24/10/2021 11:48

Everything you've mentioned you don't like sounds quite carby, plus you've mentioned you don't like feeling sleepy when full at lunch time. Maybe a protein lunch is the way to go as you won't feel over full or like you're going to doze off, you mention you like eggs/bacon too. Cold cuts of meat, olives, nuts, cheeses with a couple of water biscuits - might any of those ideas work? If you budget stretches to it most supermarkets do "protein pots"too which are quite handy and palatable.

Don't worry, I think a fair few of us snook in one day when something was on sale at Waitrose.

Sparklfairy · 24/10/2021 11:53

OP my DM never has lunch. It's not 'disordered eating' or whatever rubbish PPs are coming out with. She has a big breakfast (which isn't my sort of thing) of muesli with extra nuts thrown in and works right through, and has dinner 11-12hrs later.

If it were me, I'd have a big breakfast of something like bacon, egg, mushrooms and tomatoes and that would keep me going. High protein and low carb, because carbs give me the munchies...

Larryyourwaiter · 24/10/2021 12:21

This is probably it really. I need not to be able to eat lunch and just have some fruit. And I need to move into a hotel where they can provide me this also.

Totally feel the same. Love food, love cooking, hate lunch, hate sandwiches and other lunch type foods. I try to avoid breakfast until as late as I can bear it and then have an early dinner nowadays. But then I tend to need an energy boost in the afternoon and eat shit like biscuits. It's a no-win having this affliction! Grin
jamandmarmalade · 24/10/2021 13:33

packet of salami?

Billandben444 · 24/10/2021 14:05

I can't face breakfast so have an early lunch of either a porridge pot (kettle, no microwave) with berries or stewed plums, or oatcakes with peanut butter - I'd have cuppasoup with this but as that's a no no just a cup of tea/coffee.

Maybe the problem is that you’re stuck on ‘lunch’ things. As lots in this thread have suggested, why can’t you just have whatever you like for breakfast?
