What do I need from the oriental supermarket?

Hi,

I've got reason to visit the oriental supermarket tomorrow and for some reason I've never been! I'm doing a Korean cooking class in a few days so need some quite specific ingredients.

Love all foods and flavours so help me out and tell me what else I need to try whilst I'm there! Thanks

Show me a single Asian person that experiences reaction from MSG.

My friend who gets ill after eating it isn't Asian. Why do you find it so difficult to believe that it does make some people unwell. Although there is no scientific evidence that MSG is bad for you every person is different. Just because science doesn’t prove something doesn’t mean it’s not happening to you.

What is your problem?

fretnot · 01/05/2021 23:12

My husband? Think I mentioned him earlier. I was always relaxed about MSG but have been led by him and his family to avoid it. I’ve seen his eczema reaction and my daughter’s.

There was a LOT of food-based anti-Chinese racism on these boards a year ago and I usually have my eyes open to it. I don’t think it’s on this thread!

Sorry, thought I was replying to @Ostryga

His eczema is not cause by MSG

"Love people taking the piss out of Asian hate to make themselves feel better for being called out.

It’s ok to say you are upset for being called out and also accepting that you have a lot to learn."

What on earth are you going on about? Confused

Its laughable that you think you've "called racists out" here and that they need to grow. Seriously, you couldn't be more wrong.

I won't be replying to you again as this is otherwise a great thread with good tips on what to buy, I'm looking forward to my class and to getting my bamboo steamer on the go.

People with eczema are used to scepticism when they identify a trigger. It always sounds hocus pocus. I avoid wheat as it makes my endometriosis worse. People raise an eyebrow there too but it works for me so I’ll carry right on.

Ninkanink · 01/05/2021 23:17

FFS what a load of nonsense. Thank

Ninkanink · 01/05/2021 23:19

Random ‘thank’ there but I’ll just make it into a sentence:

Thank goodness OP is free to ignore the utter bollocks.

Ostryga · 01/05/2021 23:20

Utter bollocks?

Racism isn’t bollocks even if you don’t agree.

Ninkanink · 01/05/2021 23:22

You’re talking utter bollocks.

I also won’t be engaging with you any further.

Ninkanink · 01/05/2021 23:26

@sunsetsand what did you buy?

I’m so looking forward to my next order with souschef - I’m going to get a steamer as well!

fretnot · 01/05/2021 23:26

I also avoid cottage cheese because it makes me gip. Hopefully that's not offending anyone

From the freezer: fish balls, meat slices, dumplings (all for hotpot), dim sum.
From the fridge: daikon, garlic, golden mushroom, Choi sum and as much pak Choi as you can eat in the next 3 days.
Off the shelf: Vietnamese rice noodles for pho, wheat noodles for chow mein, , soy sauce, nam pla, shrimp paste, Szechuan pepper, Thai sweet chilli dipping sauce, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts.
I've never got on with dried mushrooms but I know that for most people wooden ears are a must.

Enjoy!

sunsetsand · 01/05/2021 23:38

I got the things I need for my class plus the steamer, gyoza and dim sum from the freezer.

Noodles, various dipping sauces, sesame oil, chilli oil, sesame seeds, milk sweets, buns.

Also something that caught my eye in the freezer section, it looks like triangle rice parcels wrapped in a leaf and frozen. I think the kids will love them.

Ostryga · 01/05/2021 23:45

I’m sure the kids will love knowing the amount of abuse Asian people and children experience on a daily basis.

But msg is bad.

Ninkanink · 01/05/2021 23:50

Yummy! I’ve got a little plastic mold to make gyoza and I keep meaning to do so but haven’t yet...maybe I’ll make some this coming week.

Sorry, I don’t stop allowing white people being racist because they’re uneducated
Ostryga · 01/05/2021 23:53

This thread IS racist.

If you don’t like it please question why you don’t.

Please step out of your white lives for 5 minutes.

Take a moment to actually understand.

RampantIvy · 01/05/2021 23:53

I'm failing to see any racism on this thread. Why don't you report it to MNHQ if you feel that this has happened?

Of course! Why don’t i slink away instead of calling people out.
Ostryga · 01/05/2021 23:55

Make it easier for white people right??

Ninkanink · 01/05/2021 23:56

@sunsetsand definitely check out Aaron and Claire on YouTube - you’ll get lots of good ideas for Korean dishes!

RampantIvy · 02/05/2021 00:05

I'm not white

sunsetsand · 02/05/2021 00:05

I will! I've been taking classes online now and again and I've a cupboard full of ingredients I'd never used before so the more recipes the better!
