What do I need from the oriental supermarket?

Hi,

I've got reason to visit the oriental supermarket tomorrow and for some reason I've never been! I'm doing a Korean cooking class in a few days so need some quite specific ingredients.

Love all foods and flavours so help me out and tell me what else I need to try whilst I'm there! Thanks

In the fridge section you might find mango pancakes
They are rolled pancakes filled with whipped cream and diced mango, absolutely delicious

DD bought a mango pancake layer cake. It was delicious. I bake, but really couldn't be bothered with making a pancake layer cake.

I need another trip to Leeds Grin

I've had two had reactions to msg. One in a Thai restaurant in Manchester where my heart started racing, I was very hot & sweaty and this lasted for 20 mins to half an hour in the ladies. Someone called a member of staff and he came in saying I had Msg poisoning. He said the chef had put too much msg in the curry.
Another time was in Thailand where we were eating at a beachfront restaurant, where they sprinkled msg on the seafood as seasoning. I keeled over at the table and dh was called back abruptly from the tourist shop. To find me prone and people asking him whether i'd taken drugs.

There's really no racist element to this. And I can say this as dh is Asian and my dc's are mixed.

Thanks to this thread, I took a detour yesterday and restocked my cupboards with all kinds of yummy —mostly chili— condiments. Also found some Pho stock, so I’m looking forward to giving that a try.

We had Dan dan noodles last night and we’re planning a Chinese beef cheek stew in a couple of days. I’m also going to make spring rolls and gyoza soon!👍👍

That was just your racism making you ill, not the MSG

I have no idea about MSG. I don't have a problem with it myself, but I don't presume to know how others react to it. However, this statement is ridiculous. Having an Asian spouse and mixed race children absolutely does not mean that you cannot be guilty of racism, nor does it make you an authority on what is racist and what is not.

Fferny1 · 03/05/2021 10:45

@HoppingGreen 😂.

Recommendations to buy are Curry Leaves ( make such a difference) thai chicken sauce, chilli with oil jar, fresh bean curd, Filipino garlic popcorn, frozen dimsum, Ice cream mochi, tinned mixed veg with quail eggs, tinned gluten, sauces, Korean spicy noodles ( kids fave)

Fferny1 · 03/05/2021 11:01

Absolute bollocks @Paralysedbyinertia.

Ninkanink · 03/05/2021 11:04

Let’s not feed the monster.

Let’s just feed ourselves, and live and let live.

Yeah, but I think she would know if she was racist

Anyhooo, as Ninkanink says it’s best to focus on the delicious food

I'm not going to jump to the defense of msg but that sounds like a histamine reaction. I have to be quite sparing with fermented ingredients and avoid some entirely because I get it quite bad.
Fferny1 · 03/05/2021 14:06

Wow @pickachew I think you may well be right. I have several symptoms listed under Histamine Issues.

Off the back of this thread I just made Mango pancakes 😋😋😋

They were delicious, even though they could have had more mango.

Really easy to make as well

Ninkanink · 03/05/2021 20:31

I really miss the taste of proper mangoes like the ones we had in India when I was a child. I’ve had one perfect one in the last twenty-odd years and it was heaven.

Lordy. I don't even want to imagine the taste ;) As a child my dad used to eat them from trees in Jamaica and be hosed down afterwards.

I'm late to this thread, but my shopping list, particularly for Korean food, would be:

  • dried anchovies
  • gochujjang
  • gochu garu
  • daenjjang
  • Korean fish sauce
  • lots of garlic and ginger
  • sesame oil
  • sesame seeds
  • dried kelp sheets (for stock and soups)
  • bean sprouts (the ones in western supermarkets are never fresh)
  • medium firm tofu and fresh tofu (soon duboo - comes in a tube)
  • a good quality rice like Nishiki
  • a variety of kimchi, not just typical mat kimchi.
  • LA cut kalbi beef (beef short rib cut so that the bones are like eyes down one side)
  • sweet potato noodles for japchae
  • mirin
  • Korean black bean sauce (for my favourite - jajangmyun)

99www.seriouseats.com/how-to-stock-a-korean-pantry-jeot-jang-and-more-ingredients-to-know Serious Eats]] has a good article on Korean pantry staples.

Mominatrix · 06/05/2021 11:19

^there is a video which explains the ingredients in the link
