What do I need from the oriental supermarket?

Hi,

I've got reason to visit the oriental supermarket tomorrow and for some reason I've never been! I'm doing a Korean cooking class in a few days so need some quite specific ingredients.

Love all foods and flavours so help me out and tell me what else I need to try whilst I'm there! Thanks

@RampantIvy

I'm not white
Me either. Wonder why I’m so furious
Ostryga · 02/05/2021 00:08

But you know. MSG is hell and white women tell me I’m being racist

paralysedbyinertia · 02/05/2021 00:21

I really want gyoza now!

If I were shopping, I'd look for umeshu, nori, furikake rice sprinkles, panko, fresh shiso if available, sambal oelek, kecap manis, vietnamese spring roll rice paper and tempeh. And decent soy sauce.

paralysedbyinertia · 02/05/2021 00:22

Oh, and mirin.

AnExcellentWalker · 02/05/2021 00:58

I am very partial to umeboshi plums. And proper, unpasteurised kimchi.
If MSG isn't a problem, I would recommend the Goldfish brand Chinese curry paste. Very good, very easy. Keeps very well.

Strokethefurrywall · 02/05/2021 01:00

Lychees and haw flakes. A million packets of haw flakes...

Anne1958 · 02/05/2021 01:23

But why do people avoid MSG? That’s my question

Because like you it’s migraine inducing.

You know how hurtful this is? Because I try and fight for knowledge and science

And yet I’m told I’m a headache.

I think the people around you would have done you a service over the years if they’d told you not all attention is good attention.

Your contributions to this thread are ridiculous and are becoming even more so each time you post.

@sunsetsand

Are you taking classes through air B and B online ? If you aren't they are great ! I loved the Thai and Vietnamese ones!

RampantIvy · 02/05/2021 07:09

I think I will Google for some of these classes. I once did an Idian cookery class at a local Indian takeaway. It was brilliant.

Only for some people.

It's absolutely fine to use, It's not like your sprinkling your food with cocaine.

RampantIvy · 02/05/2021 08:27

I'm fine with MSG BTW.

It is racist to avoid MSG. It is a flavour enhancer that has been scientifically proven to not cause any ill effects (unless people consume kilos of the stuff).

It’s just glutamate, which is found in tomatoes, Parmesan, seafood, juices, mushrooms, peas etc. If you can eat all those with no reaction then you can happily consume MSG in every meal if you wanted.

There is no such thing as Chinese restaurant syndrome.

Lol at avoiding MSG being racist.
feelingsadtoday2021 · 02/05/2021 09:15

@RampantIvy

Try air B and B online classes, I have taken loads they are amazing

There is a great Mexican taco class and lots of Indian ones for example

All the hosts who normally host in person experiences are now doing online ones

sunsetsand · 02/05/2021 09:16

I haven't seen the air B&B classes, but I'll have a look. No this was a recommendation to someone more local.

She'd started doing them via zoom in lockdown and they've been really good. We did Sri Lankan food which was great too.

As I said previously, I realise that Chinese food sydrome has been disproved, but there are some people who are sensitive to MSG.

This is what I said upthread.

Although there is no scientific evidence that MSG is bad for you every person is different. Just because science doesn’t prove something doesn’t mean it’s not happening to you.

Can I suggest that you are being "people sensitive to MSGist"

Are you always like this with anyone who is sensitive to an ingredient? Stop being so obtuse.

sunsetsand · 02/05/2021 09:25

@feelingsadtoday2021 I've just looked at those classes, good price too. Booked on to the empanada class Grin

Every time MSG intolerance is studied, no one has a reaction.

MSG intolerance is made up. There is no such thing. If people got migraines when they ate foods high in gulatmate I’d kind of get it, but no one gets a reaction from ketchup.

MangosteenSoda · 02/05/2021 09:47

Think I might have to go to our Asian supermarket today after catching up with this thread. Definitely need to cook some of my old favourites.

BTW, there are plenty of local restaurants in Hong Kong that don’t use MSG. I think it’s often the same ones that use the meat substitutes and no alliums for religious/purity reasons. Other restaurants are all low salt/sugar/msg (anything tasty) for the health conscious market. So it seems some Asians avoid msg along with a bunch of other stuff for their own personal reasons. It wouldn’t cross my mind to give their reasons a 2nd thought, just as I wouldn’t presume to tell the OP that her consultant’s recommendations are based on anything other than a medical opinion.

It’s a shame that a thread full of people who absolutely love Asian food (and don’t have any objections to MSG) has been derailed in this way.

My biggest bugbear with, specifically Chinese, takeaway/restaurant food in the UK is that it has been too anglicised. I miss the variety, textures and flavours so much.

lastqueenofscotland · 02/05/2021 10:02

Crispy chilli oil by the metric tonne

RampantIvy · 02/05/2021 10:06

Sorry about that @MangosteenSoda. I took the bait. I really dislike it when people make blanket statements like Ostryga has.

I'm beginning to wish I had bought more things at the Asian supermarket now. I too, wish that we could get more authentic Chinese food. However, I draw the line at chicken feet and gizzards Grin.

My best friend at college was from Hong Kong and we often used to eat proper home cooked authentic Chinese food at her house. The only food I really didn't like was tripe. She also enjoyed eating traditional English food at our house - particularly roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.
