Why are British women such shit cooks??

moondog · 05/11/2007 22:57

I mix with a lot of different people.
Over the years, the women I know who can cook could be counted on one hand (and my mother and sister are two of those.)

Seriously, people haven't got a fucking clue about even the most basic stuff. On the rare occasion I am even invited to eat in someone else's house it is usually inedible slop.

And yet,the tv has nothing but cookery programmes on it,Gordon Ramsey is a househole name and the bookshops burst with glossy tomes that make the best seller list.

Seriously, any ideas???

What are they doing wrong in your opinion? What makes the food inedible? What makes a great cook?

Need to know this IMO before your question can be answered.

TrinityRhino · 05/11/2007 22:59

evening moondog, you having a bad night or just thought it would be nice to insult lots of people?

Greensleeves · 05/11/2007 22:59

Speak for yourself!!

electra · 05/11/2007 22:59

I don't know. I am a great cook trapped in a sh*t cook's body!

My husband is a fantastic cook though. Maybe one day I will have an epiphany...I live in hope.

shrooms · 05/11/2007 22:59

I think it's more that people don't bother to practise due to busy lifestyles, and think that all cooking is time-consuming and difficult.
Shame, as few people get to appreciate the joy of cooking.

mamazon · 05/11/2007 23:00

maybe your not invited as your so ungrateful and rude?

CountessDracula · 05/11/2007 23:00

I know plenty who can
you are clearly mixing with the wrong types moondog

Greensleeves · 05/11/2007 23:00

LOL at "househole name" though, fabulous Freudian slip

expatinscotland · 05/11/2007 23:00

i have no experience of british women's cooking, really.

my MIL would always go and buy a bunch of stuff from ASDA if we were going over.

i'm Hispanic, so there was always cooking going on at home!

CountessDracula · 05/11/2007 23:00

(i know where you are sitting btw )

moondog · 05/11/2007 23:00

They just can't cook Emkana.They really can't.
Basic stuff like roasting meat or making a gravy or actually following a recipe seems beyond most of them.
What are the Germans like then?
My parents go to Germany all the time and rave about the food.

Perhaps you are mixing with the wrong people Moondog. None of my friends serve inedible slop. Most are very good cooks.
Give us some examples of what you mean.

electra · 05/11/2007 23:02

Is this going to rival the formula thread?

Beenleigh · 05/11/2007 23:02

Cheeky sod, I'm a good cook, and so are most, not all, but most of the fabulous women I am friends with, but I shan't be inviting you to test that claim out!

TrinityRhino · 05/11/2007 23:02

I can't help but take offence at this sweeping generalisation of all british women which therefore includes me and you have no idea whether I can cook or not

moondog · 05/11/2007 23:03

lol lol CD.
I have The Band playing on my funky new Bose system and dh is installing a fuck off flat screen tv next door (although no connection I assure you between your visit and non appearence of said items!)

Hey,you were spotted loads over yuor week here! My lovely neighbour Bethan (who owns the fields behind us) was going to come over to say hi and ask if your dd wanted to come to the farm to play with her three dses but her dh (very shy) told her not to disturb you.Mind you,he had spotted your convoy three times during the week in different places and was able to work out exactly where you had been.

You were not alone!

Really moondog? What do they like about German food? According to the most eminent German food critic German women (and men) can't cook at all.

omg I was stalked by the league of gentlemen

You were remembered in teh Keralan place (oh and saw the mongolian waitress, she is new and not typical it must be said)

Beenleigh · 05/11/2007 23:06

can you cook md?

CountessDracula · 05/11/2007 23:06

come to think of it most of the women I know who are good cooks are not of british parentage or not solely

me included

handlemecarefully · 05/11/2007 23:06

I can cook just fine!

For dinner on Saturday we (us and some friends) had:

  • warm Gazpacho soup (yes I know it is generally served chilled but this was for warm soup) with french bread croutons topped with shredded crab, followed by:
  • sea bass cooked with olive oil, rosemary and lemon thyme and served with a potato crush (king edwards and sweet potato mixed together and drizzled with a mixture of chopped chives, parsley, olive oil and grated zest of lemon) plus a side dish of green beans and broad beans with a fennel dressing.
  • and finally Eton mess

Though I say it myself it was outstanding
