Why are British women such shit cooks??

moondog · 05/11/2007 22:57

I mix with a lot of different people.
Over the years, the women I know who can cook could be counted on one hand (and my mother and sister are two of those.)

Seriously, people haven't got a fucking clue about even the most basic stuff. On the rare occasion I am even invited to eat in someone else's house it is usually inedible slop.

And yet,the tv has nothing but cookery programmes on it,Gordon Ramsey is a househole name and the bookshops burst with glossy tomes that make the best seller list.

Seriously, any ideas???

oh god I can't believe people are getting on their high horses about this thread , have I slipped into a parallel universe or summat?

Ah,interesting Emkana. They are fussy discerning and just say it is the business.
Mind you,I read recently that Germans have an even greater obesity problem than us.

Yes CD, maybe I am, but wherever I have lived (and I have lived all over) I rarely come acroos good cooks. Foolish to generalise I know but in the main,British women are not good cooks.

I grew up with Australians and a lot of them were brilliant cooks

(Yes, lol at househole too!)

What about British men? Are they included in your criticism (in a reversal of the old grammatical rule 'the masculine embraces the feminine)? Or are they mostly quite talented? Or is the cooking ability of the average British man irrelevant because it's Our Job to feed him?

FWIW I can't cook - not naturally talented or interested, find it frustrating and have been de-skilled by my dh who actually likes bloody cooking, thank Christ. But my best friend is a chef. And female.

CountessDracula · 05/11/2007 23:08

ah well there you go

My mum is Australian and a fantastic cook

handlemecarefully · 05/11/2007 23:08

Who is getting on their high horse? (re-scans thread for moral indignation)

CountessDracula · 05/11/2007 23:08

moondog am thinking that in fact you need a wee trip to London for mn xmas party

edam · 05/11/2007 23:09

Obesity crisis largely due to lack of exercise rather than diet, though. As a nation, we aren't eating significantly more than we did 20 years ago, it's just that we are moving about much, much less.

handlemecarefully · 05/11/2007 23:09

oh yes, I see....

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that I cook very frequently at dinner parties. Vegan food for omnivores who always gobble it down and ask for more.

And if you can raise happ healthy, and well nourished kids you must be doing something right. (Unless you have a personal chef of course)

What has provoked you to think that all british women are bad at cooking, I wonder?

TrinityRhino · 05/11/2007 23:09

I was getting a bit miffed

Greensleeves · 05/11/2007 23:09

Come off it HMC, the thread is bristling with righteous indignation

moondog · 05/11/2007 23:10

Yes Been, I can cook well.I like it,tis one of my great pleasures.

HMC,sounds terrific (did Dubai go well btw??)

CD,we were intrigued by Keralaln place and was one of the few Indian restaurants I have been to where front of house was European. You know, that woman with ponytail who looks like sahe is moonlighting from day job as cashier.

Also mysterious European guy who spent a lot of time in the kitchen.,Was he delivering food?

handlemecarefully · 05/11/2007 23:10

Edam - I beg to differ. Our portion sizes are waaay bigger than they used to be and out of alignment with what they should be, coupled with the fact that we are taking less exercise

CountessDracula · 05/11/2007 23:10

well normally it isn't
pony tail bird's dh is lovely keralan
She is white Goan

CountessDracula · 05/11/2007 23:11

don't know white bloke in kitchen

they take dd in there and let her cook poppadums

handlemecarefully · 05/11/2007 23:12

Dubai was great thanks Moondog...although I wasn't all that impressed by the restaurant near the top floor of the Burg(have since discovered it is the restaurant near the ground floor that gets the most plaudits)

...have fun time, but dd found a human poo on the beach

CountessDracula · 05/11/2007 23:12

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
nice!

handlemecarefully · 05/11/2007 23:12

'had' fun time

Beenleigh · 05/11/2007 23:13

I did mean to put a at the end of my first post btw

moondog · 05/11/2007 23:13

I note that if I am in someone's house (and as a salt I go to a lot of homes) anything like a stew or a curry comes from a packet/cook in sauce.

People buy ready prepared crap.

Feed their kids awful stuff.

Dreadful; really. No joy or pride in it at all,no understanding of how a nicely prepared meal can do wonders for creating good family vibes or igniting romance between a couple.I dunno, when I hear people talk about 'snuggling down to watch tv' with their partners, it just sounds too dull for words.

My happiest times ever involve chopping and stirring and drinking wine.

JeremyVile · 05/11/2007 23:13

Can we assume that you rate the cooking of British men?

Or do you just not judge them by the same standards as women?

edam · 05/11/2007 23:14

That is true, HMC (I can feel a Monty Python moment coming on, where I end up agreeing to add 1000 items to my original list 'but apart from a, b, c.... x, y, z it's just lack of exercise'.)

moondog · 05/11/2007 23:15

Ahh,how interesting re that woman.
God, she seems and looks so British.
Wish I had known, would have quizzed her mercilessly. My parents are going there via train form Bombay this Christmas.
Poppadum cooking sounds cool

OMFG about the poo. Very un Dubai!!!
