Please, please, please - I've asked for a slow cooker for my birthday [sad old git] so would love some recipes.

DragonFaerie · 08/09/2007 22:29

Oooh what a fab idea, I bought a slow cooker 8 months ago...it's still sitting, unused in the cupboard

Nemo2007 · 08/09/2007 22:31

I got mine about 2 weeks ago and have used it about 4 times. Although no recipes as such yet, just bunging in anything I had,lol

magnolia74 · 08/09/2007 22:34

At the moment the only thing I do is Beef Casserole:

Cubed beef (braising steak or similar)
Onions
Carrots
Peppers
Beef stock
New potatoes
Baby corn
Dumplings.

I pop slow cooker on high and put the stock in.
Chop all the veg and chuck it in
Meat goes in last and on the top as veg takes a bit longer. I don't precook any of it.
Usually put it on high at 10-11am and its ready any time from 4pm. I put dumplings in for the last 45 minutes

jambuttie · 09/09/2007 09:48

I've just put a stew in too well at 8am this morning I did

Cubed Beef
Onion
Carrot
Marmite(normally dont eat this but it is delicious in stew)
Gravy

On High at the moment but will be turned down soon

I bought one last winter and I LOVE it. I'll have a look at my recipes.

I like the way it gently cooks food but doesn't over cook it.

I love that organised 'in control' feeling of seeing a lovely big pot of yummy food all sorted on the side waiting for everyone when they're ready.

biglips · 09/09/2007 09:58

it does have to be defrosted the leg of lamb that is in my freezer, does it ???

biglips · 09/09/2007 09:59

ive made a few things in mine - a chilli con carne, a stew, ive put a few meats in it cos it cooks gorgeous!!

Nemo2007 · 09/09/2007 10:03

BLS yes wouldnt cook frozen meat personally.

I love mine but it makes me hungry constantly through the day!!

biglips · 09/09/2007 10:04

i DO need to get one of these!! and i do have one that came with the cooker too

biglips · 09/09/2007 10:05

...yeah by sniffing it all day long...it IS worth the wait though!!

TinyGang · 09/09/2007 10:06

I must try again with a whole piece of meat.

The one time I tried was the only time I had a disappointing result.

I cooked a piece of gammon but it was slimy and greasy. I prefer to boil then roast that I think. But I've read that lamb and beef are nice in a slow cooker.

biglips · 09/09/2007 10:06

oh well ill wait till tmrw to use it as not used it for ages!!

McDreamy · 09/09/2007 10:07

I usually do joints of meat in the slow cooker (have never tried gammon as usually do that in coca cola!) Lamb, beef, pork all lovely!

biglips · 09/09/2007 10:08

ive also tried Rice pudding too...its gorgeous!

Nemo2007 · 09/09/2007 10:11

first time I used it I plonked a whole chicken in..was faba apart from fact it was so well cooked that bones were also falling apart..oops.
Will be buying a recipe book soon though. I did the ebay ebook which looks good but pain as it is all on computer.

TinyGang · 09/09/2007 10:11

Ooh yes stick to coca cola for your gamon - that's the nicest way I agree.

I have to make a huge effort not to take the lid off to poke at whatever is cooking. I find it very hard to leave things alone when cooking

jambuttie · 09/09/2007 10:13

SLOW COOKED CURRY serves 6-8 people

1.3kg beef steak or lean stewing beef, cut into 4cm cubes
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon curry powder
2 garlic cloves minced
1 cup raisins
fluffy rice
1 cup diced onion
1/s cup flour
1/s teaspoon pepper
1 can (440gm)beef broth
2 apples(unpeeled)cored and finely chopped

Wipe beef well. Mix flour and curry powder. Coat meat cubes with flour mixtures. Place meat in Slow Cooker. Add garlic, raisins, sliced apples, onion, salt and pepper. Pour in broth and stir to blend. Cover and cook on Low setting for 8 to 10 hrs or until meat is tender.

Before serving, stir in additional curry powder to taste(up to 1 tablespoon) and chopped apples. Serve over hot rice.

Could also substitute beef for lamb, chicken etc
