Long story short. Moving soon so just using up all food we have in fridge freezer and cupboard before we go.
So tonight is shepherds pie. I'm not going to buy any extra ingredients either. I usually have it with a side of veg or salad but were out of salad and I'm not looking to do veg because ds won't eat that and prob won't eat the Shepard's pie either come to think of it!
Aibu to serve with chips?

Baked beans? You weird people ha ha.

Usually serve with veg so carrots, peas, sprouts etc.

We have it with Yorkshire pudding, peas and carrots 😍

I put a layer of baked beans under the cheesy mash, I served it last week with Waitrose red cabbage and sprouts

I put peas and carrots into it so just serve with ketchup and loads of gravy.

I thought the whole point of it was that it was a whole meal as it is? It has the meat, veg, potato and sauce all in there already. We sometimes have pickled beetroot with it though as that's what my Dad used to have so it just feels right.

In our house, there is never a side with Shepherd's pie because there are already loads of veg in it (food processor chopped onion, garlic, carrots, courgette, mushrooms, and broccoli stalk if I have any - and unchopped (so visible) petits pois peas), and the potato is on the top.

peas. You don't need chips because it has potato on it already.

PurpleDaisies · 08/11/2018 10:24

You don’t “need” chips but it’s lovely to dip them in the filling.

I’m veggie and make mine with lentils so it’s technically not a shepherds pie. Always put marmite in. I’d eat it in its own or with peas, carrots, broccoli and/or cabbage. Garlic bread is a treat too.

Has anyone done a shepherds potato? Cooked baked potato, middle scooped out and mashed. Shepherds pie mix in to the potato shell and mash on top. Bake until browned on top. Really good comfort food.

@purpledaisies I haven’t done a shepherds potato but do a similar sort of thing with chilli or taco mince. Might have to try yours as well!

Pickled beetroot? Really??
And a few people have suggested it, I'm flabbergasted. It would never occur to me to serve cold pickled beetroot with a hot meal. Especially Shepherd's pie, a meat and gravy based dish.

Brocolli, cabbage, spring greens.
